I have a 2012 roadmachine slr01. The crank housing has become disconnected from the frame. So I can confirm that your assessment of this area was correct. Bmc bikes look great. But badly constructed in my experience as well
i was working for a bmc dealer in austria and can confirm all the things Raoul said. we had about 2 (two) seatpost a week (!) witch broke...after months of repeated comparing at bmc they sendet us 30 seatposts and seatclamps. The only thing they changed was the recommend torque for clamping - they went from 5nm to 3nm and we still killed those seatclamps - we used richey torque liquid and top of the line torque wrenches. in german bmc stands for "basteln mit carbon" - "bungle with carbon" they had all sorts of problems between 2013 and 2016 when i was working at that flagship store.
Love your content. It's so refreshing to hear from an the perspective of an unbiased expert who tears these bikes down both literally and figuratively when called for. I've learned a heap more about carbon bikes from the videos I've seen on this channel thus far than I had accumulated over the years from everywhere else. I got to say, it's really changing my mind about buying a used carbon bike, and could even go so far as to put me off the material altogether. Though I had a 2014 TCR and I must confess I absolutely loved it and never really questioned it's composition or any potential problems with the carbon. Ignorance was bliss. Having just enough knowledge to shake my confidence in my gear is not the best position to be in, but it beats the ER or the grave. Thanks so much for the education. But alternatives to carbon also have problems, especially wen a tight budget dictates what I'll be riding more than any marketing campaign or personal preference. I can't afford Ti, and really don't deserve it. But I will be much more careful choosing another carbon frame and treating it with the utmost care to avoid compromising it's structural integrity.
I was riding a 2012 roadracer sl01 when I got hit by a van making a left turn into my right of way and the bike made out much better than some of my bones. Frame was fine. I still ride it today. Just needed to replace the shifters.
Agree. But hey, they HAVE to chew the consequence of their own lack of control on the manufacturing process. Raoul is the man. The only problem of this channel is that has not more and more views and subscribers. The info just needs to pass away to anyone who is interested in bikes.
but if we write to BMC about it, i am sure they will respond by saying "the wrinkles and voids does not affect the reliability and integrity of the product". anyone want to bet ?
The more I watch your videos the more I'm afraid what I'm riding. Since I've seen that for 400 euros I can get a frame and fork from CUBE I think I'll replace the frame every 2-3 years just by swapping the components. That should save me at least from fatigue and corrosion issues. Cheers and keep 'email coming!
Got a 2014 model SLR01, every issue described, the frame has it. Except for the seatpost cracking. I did however have a frame replaced under warranted for pulling the rear brake cable into the frame. It was a chinese factory made frame. My replacement frame is a Taiwan made frame, it hairline cracked at the toptube. No warranty. The dropouts are wornout, no warranty, though I spoke to a BMC shop owner recently, & she told me they replaced loads of 2014 models under warranty for dropout damage. They are supposed to be better made now in 2016 & later. The newest model even has a 50 gram increase in weight to have more reinforcements. Too bad, really, because they ride & handle extremely well..
sabamacx I hear about a cracked bmc every other week. They're terribly fragile. Or at least they have been. Can't wait to see the cut op of thr newer one
sabamacx, I've checked my 2017 BMC Roadmachine after reading your comment. And I'm seeing a half-inch length hairline crack right behind the seat tube. It can just be a paint crack or the early days of a cracked frame. Was yours in a similar state when the frame was warrantied?
Yes, it presented the same way. A feint line that may have been an early paint crack or cracked frame. Shining a light from a torch on the side made it appear deeper. BMC warrentied it immediately and I waited 4 weeks for a new frame to be flown from Switzerland to Australia.
MrFornicater I am also interested in the lugged frames. I still enjoy my 10 year old lugged Look 595 Ultra. Haven't seen one hanging on the wall in any of the videos yet but I was impressed with quality of the Time frame that was reviewed recently which was also a traditional lugged design.
Look and Time have a sterling reputation for carbon made frames...as far as I'm aware they don't out source to China...out sourcing is the main problem behind all this shit! The public are getting ripped off and paying top dollar for mass produced crap that can't even be recycled!
Malcolm Hetherington, unfortunately the obsession with low weight seems to be a higher priority for many rather than quality. I'm more interested in knowing what quality controls the manufacturer has in place over how many grams were shaved off the previous model.
Malcolm Hetherington Looks are made in Tunisia but they funded, built and own the facility, giving them a lot more control over the frames and components coming from it.
Talking about sanding frames... that makes me think about people who re-aints their frames. I mean, the question is: what kind of things have to be taken in cound when sanding a frame in order to be re-painted? Thanks Raoul. Awesome job.
Doesn't have to be pretty on the inside, just functional. Amazing how thin it all looks but still very stiff. I have ridden my 2011 BMC Race machine downhill at 55 mph and will do it again.
I agree about function being the important factor. However with composites how it looks on the inside shows functional parameters such as molding variations and flaws. So it is a look not only at the material quality, but also at the care taken to build which will reflect on the performance, durability and safety.
Another awesome video! thanks Raoul! I gave them a lot of "zwiss" credit but they are not off my list for good. do you have a page where we can vote on your next cut ups? I *really* curious about how Specialized Sworks fairs...
Thought BMC was one of the few that made their own frames in a completely automated factory in Switzerland. This is a 2010 frame. think after that (2012-3?) they started turning out their own frames, would like to see one of those cut up.
My girlfriend bought a 2018 Roadmachine 02 last week, and the frame is made in Taiwan. That's actually good news, though, as it's probably Giant doing the frames now and they know a thing or two about carbon.
Curious about the TeamMachine, bought a 2017 SLR02 leftover off ebay which i quite love and has already been through a season of hell on the road with no complaints. The SLR01 is already quite thinner , by about 25% but it would be interesting to see nonetheless.
Back on form Raoul! Great review. Just appalling and not fit for purpose in my opinion. Really is surprising that there are not more Court cases if this is typical - especially when paying for a "premium" product which turns out to be anything but. Thank you for letting us see into what until now has been the industry's dirty little secret.
I got two SLR01, please hurry up with the cut up,!!! you bet I will sent BMC the Video and a polite complaint if the built Quality is still as bad. Why do I got two SLR01?? Because the ride quality and handling is sublime..
Awesome video. When you find a bike like this, do you walk away from it thinking that it's representative of the quality of their builds? I mean, if their processes lead to that frame - what are the odds that they were pumping out a lot of frames of similar quality?
Believe me or not , I start having more confidence in Chinese carbon frames than the real ones , because they put more material in those areas. What about the quality of Colnago / Pinarello ? Do they have well built frames ?
Colnago have two types of construction. Tube and lug and the moulded ones (made in asia) I have bought a Colnago C60, as balloons are not used. The pieces are made and glued together. I imagine that the gluing can be stuffed up but at least the tubes and lugs are made smooth inside and out. So they can be inspected prior to assembly. Colnago also claim they test their design to 3 times the European standard. I do know the C60 frame is not a ultra light weight so hoping I have brought a bike with better Quality control. I believe all Pinos are made in asia using balloons.
fiddler on the bike True I have watch most of his vids, I am not sure if he has cut up a C60, but from memory he did comment that the C59 and C60 can have a problem with the glued joints. Maybe Raoul can comment on these tube and tube or tube and lug construction.
Hm... my way to see it is different. I dont have a special confidence in Chinese frames, nither now. The thing is that now I don't have the confidence in real branded carbon frames as I used to have. In other words: to me, Raoul's analysis put the Chinese and the branded ones way closer in terms of manufacturing than they seem. Which is scary and scamm-y.
More material doesn't mean better. Googd frames are the ones that allow for enough time in manufacturing in case of complications and quality control using ultrasonic or cat scans. Thr Cervelo R5ca is one of these examples. One of the lightest frames even today nearly 7 years later, but built in California by the engineers.. Of course the price reflects it. Would love to see one cut up!
interesting, I just spent $8,500 on a new Mountain bike and the first thing I noticed is in the sun you can see the carbon marble effect in a few spots, I thought it was AWESOME! and showed everyone. Then I watch this... and its inconsistent
Pre 2011, 3 year warranty, post 2011, 5 year warranty on their carbon frames by manufacturer BMC. That's not a lot of confidence compared to trek, specialized, kestrel offering lifetime original owner warranties on carbon frames since the min 90's.
that's what everybody is thinking if we hear "lifetime warranty" - but read the brands warranty conditions carefully, because with many brands it doesn't mean your lifetime, but the lifetime of the model or an "expected" lifetime or a "typically usual lifetime" or so... often only a marketing think without any worth in real world
'We built a Swiss factory to build the perfect carbon bike' says BMC in their marketing blurb. Bit disappointed in this to be honest as I read a BMC factory tour article a while back and they seemed to have some cool stuff going on.
This looks like what happens when a brand stops keeping their OEM on task. The more hands off and uninvolved you are with contract production it seems the more sketchy the production samples become as time goes on.
PulletSurprise I also don't think BMC have really helped the manufacturer with the design they've given them. The area around the top tube - seat tube junction looks particularly hard to make and control.
I have not seen this crap level of quality not even on a 500$ Chinese Carbon frame. This is extremely eye opening as to who is really making these frames, all outsourced out.
Currently living in China, this is exactly what I would expect from a Chinese made frame, zero fucks given about quality of work. I wonder if this is Chinese or Taiwanese made frame?
Why? It doesn't "REALLY"matter how old the bike you trust your life to is does it? It sold for the same $3-6k six years ago, is that money no longer worth anything? I don't understand your logic.
What a crap, worse than itallian frames. What about the Cannondales. Seems like all this carbon hype is just milking money off the people. Only Trek look sort of ok.
Glass freaks on glass bikes Biggest scam of the century 500 dollar frame. Sold for 6 thousand dollars. Made from the most abundant material on earth lolololol
I’m really enjoying these videos. And I think they’re important. I don’t see anyone else putting out content like this. Keep it up
Thank you very much for all the time you spend in teaching endusers and companies!
Raoul, you are my personal bikeindustry hero!
I have a 2012 roadmachine slr01. The crank housing has become disconnected from the frame. So I can confirm that your assessment of this area was correct. Bmc bikes look great. But badly constructed in my experience as well

they had all sorts of problems between 2013 and 2016 when i was working at that flagship store.
I bought a 2017 BMC and can’t wait for you to cut up that newer team machine Nice vids and you’re doing y community a good deal of work thanks !
Likewise.
Same here... this video has shaken me a little. Should have gone titanium i think.
Love your content. It's so refreshing to hear from an the perspective of an unbiased expert who tears these bikes down both literally and figuratively when called for. Thanks, that is the key, to be aware of what you are getting and the pros and cons.
I was riding a 2012 roadracer sl01 when I got hit by a van making a left turn into my right of way and the bike made out much better than some of my bones. Frame was fine. I still ride it today. Just needed to replace the shifters.
I bet some makers are quite pissed at this. But then they deserve it.
Agree. But hey, they HAVE to chew the consequence of their own lack of control on the manufacturing process. Raoul is the man. The only problem of this channel is that has not more and more views and subscribers. The info just needs to pass away to anyone who is interested in bikes.
Thank you for putting the time into these videos, Raoul!
BMC...Badly Molded Carbon.
Ouch...
keep in mind: tech from 6 years ago
I've got one from 3 years ago, all the problems described, are present.
And sanding a poor molding is just asking for trouble
Ah the sand through! Looks cool though 😕
When will you do one of a Chinarello ?
He definitely did one on Chinese wheels but I can't seem to find anything on an actual frame.
Patrick Grant carbon sucks
I"m pretty sure the only one he did was the wheels. From what I remember he said that he'd get to a Chinerillo eventually.
It was wheels and I believe it compared against an Enve rim at time
Almost bought one slr02, off my list! Thanks for sharing
Lucky I sold all my bmc shares last month, carry on.
I also bought a roadmachine 02 2017 a few weeks ago. handling is very nice but hopefully BMC has optimized their build quality
Didn't know about sand-through. Great information and insights. Many thanks!
but if we write to BMC about it, i am sure they will respond by saying "the wrinkles and voids does not affect the reliability and integrity of the product". anyone want to bet ?
Another great video Raoul
Hey Raoul, thanks for another very informative video.
These videos are so revealing. Thanks very much. Can you do the Orbea Orca, a Giant and a Cervelo?
The more I watch your videos the more I'm afraid what I'm riding. Please do Giant TCR cut up video, please, please

teammachine please!
Come on, man! Cut that Team Machine open already. We need to know the quality of a modern BMC frame!
My 2017 BMC Roadmachine was warrantied due to a crack at the back of the seat tube.
sabamacx I hear about a cracked bmc every other week. They're terribly fragile. Or at least they have been. Can't wait to see the cut op of thr newer one

I'll be sticking to lugged carbon frames from now on.
Any Focus Izalcos in the shop Raoul? They're pretty popular in Aus now....

at 8:05 did you say it was quite ordinary? it looks dreadful :-o I used to think highly of BMC!

Merida reacto or scultra sometime please loving the videos
Please post that SLR01 cut up ..I've seen two with slit top tubes and a TMR01 forks break sending rider to 6 months of facial reconstruction surgeries
Waiting for part 2 !
Where is that cut frame made?

I have this same frame and my seatpost clamp is cracked. If you still have the clamp, I would like to get one.
Where are the BMC frames made?
Thanks a million. What is the best build road bike in your wonderful professional opinion? Xavi from , Florida 🇺🇸
Do you have a Scott Foil 1st generation you could cut up ? It was an innovative bike at his time
But what that means for us customers?
Would be good to see a recent BMC cut up? I’m not sure 2011 is now relevant?
Agree, I have a new one to cut up when I get a chance.
i hope you show cannondale caad frame, it's realy interesting.

Great reviews mate
these videos make me want to go back to steel. have you ever seen inside a De Rosa Protos (pre 2017 model)?
why not go for titanium ?
These were speedy bikes glade I brought the cheaper alloy one after seeing how badly this was made!
Hoping you do something more modern in the next few months before I buy my next bike but BMC as of now is off the list. Wow...
Utterly dreadful. BMC off my shopping list
and mine! in fact, carbon now a complete worry as a material :)
Leon Smith not all carbon frames are created equal! Don’t be put off by this pile of ...... 😂😉
If you are still looking for a bike and have the money for a BMC, I would recommend Argonaut bicycles, hand made in the USA and are beautiful.
So glad I bought a BMC - lol.
Believe me or not , I start having more confidence in Chinese carbon frames than the real ones , because they put more material in those areas. What about the quality of Colnago / Pinarello ? Do they have well built frames ?

Glad I am on a Gunnar
@LuescherTeknik Any thoughts on the possibility this may be a counterfeit RM01?
Рауль - красавчик!
interesting, I just spent $8,500 on a new Mountain bike and the first thing I noticed is in the sun you can see the carbon marble effect in a few spots, I thought it was AWESOME! and showed everyone. Then I watch this... and its inconsistent
Looks a decent frame externally.
Load of crap to be fair internally ... Bottom bracket construction is horrendous.
Pre 2011, 3 year warranty, post 2011, 5 year warranty on their carbon frames by manufacturer BMC. That's not a lot of confidence compared to trek, specialized, kestrel offering lifetime original owner warranties on carbon frames since the min 90's.
christian parker lifetime means lifetime of the particular model. so lifetime means 1 year. lifetime does not mean forever. correct me if im wrong.
Giant does a genuine lifetime on carbon frames.
malayneum I think it is "life time of the original owner"
that's what everybody is thinking if we hear "lifetime warranty" - but read the brands warranty conditions carefully, because with many brands it doesn't mean your lifetime, but the lifetime of the model or an "expected" lifetime or a "typically usual lifetime" or so... often only a marketing think without any worth in real world
I was thinking about buying a BMC, but after this video i doubt they are a good choice. I will stick to my old yet good Look 675.
Raoul you should take BMC off your Christmas card list
I was in the market for a BMC.....I will wait and see what the newer frame looks like after you've hacked it in two!!! That was appalling!
Ill either go with a Time ulteam rxrs or a Ti frame or something else of higher quality
Who makes BMC
Kazak Thranduil G&M Carbon Components. Has factories in both Taiwan and China.
Do you have any data about who makes Orbea frames? Thanks
And to think GVA rides something similar at a ridiculous rate of knots across the cobbles of Paris-Roubaix. Scary.....
Something similar. Exactly. I bet his bike is not made like the ones we get as consumers.
based on his videos, no carbon frame is perfect. except for Trek, which is good enough. ill buy Trek for my xc hardtail. thank you.
After reading about the average BMC support experience, and seen it first hand on an out-of-spec frame, I'm thoroughly unsurprised.
No wonder their warranty is so short.
'We built a Swiss factory to build the perfect carbon bike' says BMC in their marketing blurb. Bit disappointed in this to be honest as I read a BMC factory tour article a while back and they seemed to have some cool stuff going on.
makes me want to stick with metal tubes
Hmm... I guess the pro`s get cherry picked ultra sounded frames....
Pretty poor for a top end European brand. :(
thats why i always go with a steel frame road bike
With steel fork too.
Whited sepulchur.
It's shocking how these high end bikes have such poor quality
its not as clean inside as i thought it would or should be .
I have not seen this crap level of quality not even on a 500$ Chinese Carbon frame.
This is extremely eye opening as to who is really making these frames, all outsourced out.
Its not safe make your Frames safe Bmc
Maybe it's a Chinese knockoff?
the knock would ve better
This looks crappy, I'll rather go with steel Colnago Master X-light frame than this carbon frames where companies are taking a piss.
Currently living in China, this is exactly what I would expect from a Chinese made frame, zero fucks given about quality of work. I wonder if this is Chinese or Taiwanese made frame?
CHINARELLO CUT UP PLEASE FOR CRYING OUT LOUD! COMPARE WITH ORIGINAL
Maybe do a bike that isn't 6 years old next time
Why? It doesn't "REALLY"matter how old the bike you trust your life to is does it? It sold for the same $3-6k six years ago, is that money no longer worth anything? I don't understand your logic.
Told ya BMC is no good.
What an abomination. Should Never be released for sale nor use
What a crap, worse than itallian frames. What about the Cannondales. Seems like all this carbon hype is just milking money off the people. Only Trek look sort of ok.
Absolutely terrible
Glass freaks on glass bikes
Biggest scam of the century
500 dollar frame. Sold for 6 thousand dollars. Made from the most abundant material on earth lolololol
No wonder their warranty is so short
