Actually i think the Quest did quite a bit of "Why". This is what i got from it: Ballas betrayed the Orokin because they executed his one true love, Margulis, and seems to have made some kind of deal with Hunhow. Given he called Natah Margulis, we can presume that deal involves making a sort of replacement out of her. Ballas turned Umbra into a Warframe as punishment for spying on him, which was a huge risk for Ballas. Why a Warframe? Well, it's established that Umbra was one of the greatest Dax of his time. It's also established that they created the Warframes from their greatest warriors, voluntary or not. Why let this one go to waste? He then most likely tried to use Umbra like any other Warframe at the time, as a bio-drone given commands by Helminth. Which did not work out. The Sentients turned against the Orokin because once they arrived at Tau, the new promised land, they realized that eventually the Orokin would just ruin that world aswell. Which they didn't want. It also explains how the Tenno were able to control those original Warframes. Not by forcing their will on those former people, but by calming them and easing their pain. Why is Natah evil now? Well, Hunhow did say in the "Natah" quest that "[the other Sentients] will say you're riven, and want to reclaim you. I will not be able to stop them." Looks like that threat already came true.
Also, I may speculating heavily here, but the reason Lotus shown us Umbra's destruction may be that her overall mission was to set up anti-orokin army, get rid of Ballas, and, after this, all orokins. She, as Margulis, successfully organised the Tenno riot, which overall led to the destruction of orokin empire and slaughter of the most orokins, but Ballas managed to escape, so she put her Tenno army to sleep until he may show up again. She had to wake us up though because of the Corpus-Grineer conflict that was affecting whole system. After a long time, Ballas did show up and took her away, gaining control over her because the possible margulis-natah deal. Because she was under his control, he got control over sentients, at the very least because Natah is the daughter of Hunhow itself and, because of that, very powerful sentient. And, because there were no other weapons avaiable, she decided to give us knowledge about the Umbra so we may use him to kill Ballas, what we successfully did. After that, her mission was (somewhat?) complete and she flew away home
Yeah, When she said , Dream not of what you are, but what you want to be, she meant she wasn't happy with being natah. But hunhow porbably took over her mind at the last part to make her say that she was coming home. mabye the next cinematic will be about saving her.
This short explanation should help you better understand why umbra is created and what's special about him and why ballas betrayed the orokin. I thought the quest was really good but that is of course opinion based. Background to understand this quest: Margulis is the lover of Ballas. We are the tenno, we gained power after the voidjump accident but the orokin leaders (which include ballas) feared our power because the power of the void could end their immortality. Margulis prevented the orokin leaders from killing the tenno (us). But by doing so she was sentenced to death by the council of the orokin. Ballas had to give his own lover the death sentence after her trial. This broke the faith Ballas had in the orokin empire. This is when he defected to the sentients and betrayed the orokin empire. Not sure about this, but I think the sentient offered him a method to bring back margulis or at least make it seem that way. It has been speculated that natah absorbed the memories of margulis if i'm correct. Now with margulis out of the way, the orokin could kill the tenno but before they could do so the sentients invaded the system. Sentients were machines or AI that they sent beyond the orogin system to search for new land filled with new resources to fuel the ever hungry orokin empire. They were slaves of the orokin but somehow freed themselves and decided to got to war with the orokin before they could come to their new homeworld (Tau system). They almost won the war until the tenno came. Their voidpower could rip any sentient apart. The sentient adapt to everything (radiation, physical damage, etc.) but cannot adapt to void energy which weakens them. Because tenno themselves could not control their power they needed a surrogate that could withstand this power. Ballas and other researchers used research of margulis to create transference to project the mind of the tenno in a warframe. What are these different types of warframes? (some specultian, but pretty sure that it's all correct) Umbra: A warframe type that retains his intelligence and is still sentient. Normally the infestation will wipe out the memories of the person it infests, however through a sacrifice they can circumvent this. By implanting an extreme memory so strong that the person will never forget it. That is also what we see here in this quest. Ballas sacrificed the son of Umbra so that the hatred, trauma and selfloathing could form a memorie strong enough so that Umbra could keep his intelligence even after the infestation completly remolded his body. That is also why, if we go in operator mode, the warframe itself will keep fighting. (see his passive) This part is speculation on my part but i'm confident that some of it is correct. Prime: A warframe made of Dax soldiers that got infused with the infested reagent. They have no memories and can be seen as a soulless hull of flesh that might retain some of it's primal instincts. It does not retain it's intelligence. This also clarifies the reason why we need to get parts of this warframe. They are not copies they are the oroginal warframe. Normal warframes: Copies of the prime warframes. Reconstructions of the oroginal. They are probably weaker because they are not based of real humans.
Notice how you had to speculate about all the important details of WHY certain things happen? That was the failure of this quest: a villain without clear or reasonable motivations, especially when he is supposed to be the driving force behind it, makes it all feel flat. The means of how Umbra was created are clear enough to me from playing the quest, but once again, WHY does Ballas choose to make him one? Outside of punishing him for spying on him, there has to be an extra reason why he is turned into a Warframe specifically - and that is never explored. His relation to the other Warframes, also, not explored.
Zanagoth Villain without reasonable motivations? I know that Warframe quests may be very mysterious, but you always had to be focused to catch on every detail of lore. How are his motivations unreasonable again? First off, Orokin decided to turn the best man into Warframes to protect themselves from the Sentients. The Dax in the quest is probably THE STRONGEST Dax ever known, because of his fight on Hull. Thats why Ballas turned him into Warframe, Orokin did that to every strong soldier or man. Ballas turned him into Warframe specifically, because of the fact he was a powerful Dax, punishment is an additional reason. Secondly, Ballas betrayed the Orokin because he wanted to see Margulis, his loved one again. How is that unreasonable? Everyone sacrifice something for love. Hunhow probably promised Ballas that he can bring Margulis back (somehow, Natah is most likely heavily involved) but only if he helps him kill the Orokin. All of this was in the quest, just listen and use logic. I do agree about the relations to other Warframes though - the only difference between Umbra and other frames (not gameplay ones, I mean storywise) I could spot is the fact that he posseses his one memory that makes him powerful, when others dont.
Zanagoth the only other note given, was that in the Vitruvian Ballas mentions that Umbras were those of skill gathered to be converted. It makes sense for Mesa's story actually, as it states that the original Mesa preferred to fight blind. This may not be the warframe user, but the person herself.
Pretty sure the Umbra Frames are the unstable prototypes developed more or less to see if they have powers worth preserving, then replicated and wiped of their memories to make the primed frames, and the regular frames are the reverse engineered versions of the mass production prime frames.
How did we remake umbra and still have him not lose his memories ...this quest shows that building warframes is a part of the storyline and is canon unlike the part where u keep killing vay hek .....so if tenno could build frames according to the quest where did they get the materials ..ballas used a war hero and turned him into an infested monster to make the frame so how did we make it .HOWWWW
No, it wasn't the greatest quest ever but I still enjoyed the quest. Made me care about my Warframes even more - all of them. Dammit Zana! That montage was fucking awesome!
I mean sure, I care for my Valkitty, Mirage, and Mesa a considerably more than most of the others, but the fact that they had messed up back-stories only plays a small part of that - I like the ones that have cool lore, and are versatile/fun to play most, but even though some of these newer ones have more in-depth stories I still like my Nova (who has no lore) and Octavia (whose lore is non-existent and completely irrelevant to her quest) more.. xD [Speaking of which, how about some stories for all the older frames that didn't get one, DE?]
Actually, for me The Sacrifice Quest was pretty good. Even if it opened new plotholes, it's still fun to play it. It also makes work of the scanner once again (like Saya's Vigil did, but only for one mission), they gave a mission where the only enemies are Ghouls (aKa, the first mission), they introduced a new Sentient (a Mimic, which is pretty tricky, since it disguises), and much more. True that Ballas was a limp antagonist, but it was fun to see all the memes that spawned to him (some about his long arm). Excalibur Umbra is also a nice upgrade to the normal and prime variants. Let's think about it: He has the power of Excalibur, the power of getting energy from Orokin Death Orbs like Excalibur Prime and can fight after you go out of trasference. Not to mention, his peculiar umbra mods, and his alternative helmet is pretty creepy. Even his second ability has a change, slightly longer but able to remove Sentient's resistances. But honestly, i never through that after all, Lotus was shown as a Sentient...And dat Sentient form is cool. If you finded the quest pretty meh, don't worry, i'll respect your opinion, Zanagoth.
it took me maybe a minute. what was difficult again , I'm looking at second dream , is the mimics and sentients and batallists etc, damn I'm ill equiped
I also agree with you on the UI redesign. I was disappointed and frustrated with just the matchmaking/squad tab at the upper-left. That's so much negative space! and now everything up there is freaking compact. I'm practically blind, I can't read that shit! It's not like that put anything else in that open area and that's just my issue with that. The items could have name plates on the bottom of their profile icons in the inventory...
I felt like the quest was more character building for the Operator. Really liked the cinematics, the "Smiles From Juran", and the whole "body and the mind" theme
Sraye Spectres were not really reliable (maybe except of moa, corrupted and ancient), and they were gettig lost on excavations. And banshee, you guessed right how I used to farm so far.
I mean... not really.. Similar maybe. But I don't think it's a reference. They're piloting giant robots in that. Warframes we're once human or human like and are not giant nor robots. I can't really see the similarity other then the sentience of umbra and the giant robots.
The answer is simple. DE clearly said the quest would be on par with the Second Dream and the War Within. Both gave us good before and after quest content. Look at the sacrifice: Boring gameplay (scan this, fight some sentients, fight excal with operator, disappointing rushed ending, boring areas like usual lua and a orokin cemetery) and no after quest content. Nothing to do but farm endo for some mods that has no existing polarity we can use on our other warframes (waste of more forma to use on other warframes but umbra). Now lets look at something like the war within: Cool gameplay (Introduction to kuva fortress, new operator gameplay, awesome story from the start to finish). After finishing the quest what do we get? The new kuva system, Riven Mods, A new tile-set (Kuva fortress), new ways to deal with sentients and stalker (remove of buffs), etc. And you wonder why people are pissed. If DE just told everyone it was just a simple warframe quest, no one would be mad. But DE are the ones to blame for saying this quest was like the second dream and the war within. To be honest, this quest was even worse than Chains of Harrow as story based. People claimed we got awesome lore from the sacrifice, to that I say BULLSHIT. If anyone actually payed any attention to the game till now, you will realize the game showed us nothing new in lore (by exception of Balla's working for Hunhow, that is the only new piece of info).
I loved this quest ngl, also Umbra being able to fight is exactly what I wanted, really feeling the co-op between Warframe and Tenno, also Komi in the rest of the game when???
During the Blackout on the ship, i was in one of the dark corners of the ship, and my kavat was walking towards me, just a set of glowing eyes slowly getting closer
I love this quest and I'm really sympathetic towards Umbra (I want to learn his Dax name ugh, Umbra is still badass tho) he lost everything and was forced to murder his own son and trapped with that memory causing him to go insane. After this quest I became an Umbra main uwu Thank you DE for such an awesome quest and for such a cool frame, idc what shade people throw at it.
2:44 I had a friend in my orbiter when I was on that part of the quest and he walked over: "huh what's this *click*" Apparently it's possible for people to do shit in your orbiter on an active quest ._.
the reason why they showed how he turned into a warframe was mainly to explain how all the warframes were made, the quest never really was about ballas or umbra or lotus tbh all 3 cinematic quests were to explain the tennos and warframes origin...that being said i agree they also failed at other things like ballas motivations and shit like that while doing soo,
I can give them a pass, tho. They are trying to make cinematic quests and explain the lore while feeding us content at the same time. Kuva survival, onslaught, saryn rework, new primes every 3 months, FIXING THE DAMN GAME AFTER EVERY PATCH. Pretty sure there will be a new warframe after limbo prime is released, too.
Regarding Ballas' motivations, they pretty much are this: Ballas and Margulis (who isn't Lotus, though the latter does have her memories) were lovers, the Orokin discovered the Tenno and wanted them dead, Margulis wanted them safe so she was killed for it (and to add salt to the injury it was Ballas out of all the people who was forced to judged her), Ballas lost faith in the Orokin and sided with Hunhow and the other Sentients, a very prominent Dax (what Teshin is, though obviously this Dax isn't Teshin) started spying on Ballas and to get rid of the Dax, Ballas used the infestation on him to force him to kill his own son (Isaah) then turned him into Excalibur Umbra.
I kinda like this quest yes it feel short , empty alot of question still give us answer : why ? what ? but next part must be something big i mean one year for 1 hours cinematic i don't think so i can feel it DE prepare for something :) maybe they will show us at tennocon also that just my opinion :)
I want to watch it but I can’t since I’m a console player waiting for the quest to come. It makes me sad I have to dodge every video including the devil herself (quite shy)
I made a EVA-01 test type cosplay using umbra. because he moves on his own? and has a eye? and have a horn? u know what, i pick all of the reasons above AT THE SAME TIME
Spoilers ahead in this comment, but since the video literally gave most of the quest this is just formality: Ok. So we know that, through this quest, the Lotus is seen as her "true self;" as a Sentinel. We SEE that. My first thought getting back to the ship, however, was why do we still have her helmet? If the Lotus is gone, why would we, as the Operator, keep the helmet of someone we see as gone? Unless she's not gone. Bare with me for a sec. We know that the Lotus is a Sentinel, but we also know that "Lotus" is not the sentinel's name; it's Natah. What if, in the next part, we are able to save the "Lotus" part of the Sentinel and the "Natah" part becomes the next baddy to defeat, but we get to use the Lotus' helmet as a "head" for a Lotus-themed Warframe? First with Umbra, now with the Lotus; as the Tenno, we will help every lost soul who comes to us, even those who used to protect and help us. Just a thought.
The quest was good, the update was not. You can come into Warframe once every 8 months(like I do) and see that none of the major issues related to team balance/weapon scaling/artificial difficulty/endgame have been even looked at ffs. I don't even know how they make money anymore.
To be fair they did made major tweaks and buffs to beam weapons as well as other weapons that were irrelevant at that time, as for endgame they did add elite onslaught (which is fun) but its not rly the end game most of us are looking for. ( DE pls gib scaling rewards pls)
Yeah I know about the weapon balance but what I'm talking about is what they said about removing mandatory stuff like Serration and Pressure Point where they just released last update basically Primed Pressure Point Umbra lol. Sanctuary for how much decent can it be have no rewards whatsoever, even for someone like me who owns the Braton and Lato Vandal from the days of the Alpha I didn't really care about these weapons and I didn't want them to be put into some extreme low drop rate on C rotation as an endgame reward. They're basically telling you "well dude here's your first weapon of the game with some different stats as a reward for beating your ass through hours of efficient farming vs high level enemies", which is stupid as fuck in my opinion. Other rewards are Relics, which makes me only cringe because thinking about the amount of farming and rng layers the usual player have to deal with. Stuff like bullet modifiers can be fun and all like how fun might me trying some new captura scenes(I never really cared about that tho), but in the end it only contributes to dilute the already bad drops in the mode.
Yes, the CDNs in Southeast Asia are pretty fucked right now. Use a VPN and connect to Canada, it's the only solution. Verifying and optimizing download cache didnt work for me.
noathegod 1 Really? It only feels that Umbra were once human, this is why they work in autopilot if you go into operator mode. Primed and normal variants were copies
Primes were humans too? Interesting. I Can understand Umbra frames since they must have been forced into transformation but Primes? Willful transformation?
MotoBlizzard I'm pretty sure they're just a refined version. think umbra as prototypes that failed because they still had consciousness, and primes as the final product without free will
Ballas has always done fucked up shit as his MO, being a defining trait of the Orokin and all that, but here he has an actual motivation to go along with it: he had seen his girlfriend Margulis die at the orders of his fellow Orokin, and so Ballas goes through a roaring rampage of revenge against the Orokin ala Count of Monte Cristo, with much overkill along the way.
6:35 Wait, this mission was operator only!? Didn't know that, because I stuck with umbra equipped in arsenal and played all the missions after acquiring its blueprint with umbra
I really loved this latest quest just because we had learned *SPOILERS* that Ballas was the one to BRING DOWN the orokin empire and that the warframes are something more than Tin-suits that Tenno fill, but rather Tortured Souls forced into a position they did not want.
I installed one of those orokin things into my umbra that changes the polarity of a mod slot, and me, being the noob I am, didn't know if there would be any negative effects

Slenderminion Boom there it is. Thats what I said to him, but I guess he missed these informations in the quest.
Thanks. I was gonna type nearly the same thing. Same for the bit about Natah.
+Slenderminion i guess that explains it.

Dammit Zana! That montage was fucking awesome!
Imagine if all of our frames were umbra . It would be really cool
PaceBreaker Productions you even care for your non-prime oberon?
The amount of caring I have directly correlates to how much golden bits they have attached upon their skins of swordsteel.
I mean sure, I care for my Valkitty, Mirage, and Mesa a considerably more than most of the others, but the fact that they had messed up back-stories only plays a small part of that - I like the ones that have cool lore, and are versatile/fun to play most, but even though some of these newer ones have more in-depth stories I still like my Nova (who has no lore) and Octavia (whose lore is non-existent and completely irrelevant to her quest) more.. xD
[Speaking of which, how about some stories for all the older frames that didn't get one, DE?]
Azure the Malk those would be great.
Let us enjoy another year of cliffhanger

It actually makes sense that she might be sentient, especially that she is Hunhows daughter after all.
Well in the Second Dream Quest her being a Sentient was already mentioned, but i didnt expect this outcome owo
Lotus has been a Sentient since Natah, hell, Natah is her Sentient name.
umbra has an alt helmet?
+Paulzlord yes, he does. It's called Excalibur Umbra Sunder Helmet, and it's basically a battle damaged version of his helmet.
"Doesn't accurately represent"
You got that right it only took you 2 seconds to find the virtuvian in the lab
it took me maybe a minute. what was difficult again , I'm looking at second dream , is the mimics and sentients and batallists etc, damn I'm ill equiped

I went up as is habit looking for caches in the Plains. Looked down and there it was.
thank god i was smart enough to use the scanner to find it. Would've taken hours for me to find that mf
The items could have name plates on the bottom of their profile icons in the inventory...
your can switch between the old and new ui in options i think
PaceBreaker Productions And if you have 2 same frames? Well good luck figuring out which one is the maxed one when trying to sell the unranked one.
can i just mention that i was able to get umbra half-way through the quest. so, i decided to play as umbra throughout the rest of the quest
So, there's an option on the settings that puts the item names at the bottom of their icons.
Just thought to throw that out there.
WTF,he ended with Umbra with just one slap,i took 3 minutes to defeat the Umbra and i died a thousand time.

My dream of afk farming came true!
You could have always done so by building Spectres or using warframes like Banshee etc.

Spectres were not really reliable (maybe except of moa, corrupted and ancient), and they were gettig lost on excavations. And banshee, you guessed right how I used to farm so far.

...aight
I mean... not really.. Similar maybe. But I don't think it's a reference. They're piloting giant robots in that. Warframes we're once human or human like and are not giant nor robots. I can't really see the similarity other then the sentience of umbra and the giant robots.
Thats the point

This is basically A Boy and His Frame.
5:05 A worse fate than becoming a Warframe.
Why do people hate Sacrifice? Because you people overhyped it to the moon and back. I went in there and came out blown away.
N3cr0 X3n0bi4 And that's where I have to completely disagree with you. For me, Sacrifice was better than Second Dream and War within

Whumpus P. Mcgrumpus Is it that raids were removed??
the reason why they showed how he turned into a warframe was mainly to explain how all the warframes were made, the quest never really was about ballas or umbra or lotus tbh all 3 cinematic quests were to explain the tennos and warframes origin...that being said i agree they also failed at other things like ballas motivations and shit like that while doing soo,
I can give them a pass, tho.
Regarding Ballas' motivations, they pretty much are this:
Ballas and Margulis (who isn't Lotus, though the latter does have her memories) were lovers, the Orokin discovered the Tenno and wanted them dead, Margulis wanted them safe so she was killed for it (and to add salt to the injury it was Ballas out of all the people who was forced to judged her), Ballas lost faith in the Orokin and sided with Hunhow and the other Sentients, a very prominent Dax (what Teshin is, though obviously this Dax isn't Teshin) started spying on Ballas and to get rid of the Dax, Ballas used the infestation on him to force him to kill his own son (Isaah) then turned him into Excalibur Umbra.
I kinda like this quest yes it feel short , empty alot of question still give us answer : why ? what ?
but next part must be something big i mean one year for 1 hours cinematic i don't think so

Spoilers ahead in this comment, but since the video literally gave most of the quest this is just formality:
Ok.
He protecc
He attacc

His son ain't coming bacc

I love how you got half of the viewers to refeel what the quest made us feel with the music and shit then you just fuckin YEET
IM SO CLOSE TO GETING HIM THO
Did anyone notice that during the vitruvian recordings, DE applied Dolby Atmos ? Great sound quality
I had the update failed thing as well, is it like only for singapore/ around asia or something?
Yes, the CDNs in Southeast Asia are pretty fucked right now. Use a VPN and connect to Canada, it's the only solution. Verifying and optimizing download cache didnt work for me.
Zanagoth yeah i had to do as well. I was raging last night cos after waiting so long, seeing "update failed" makes you kind of angry lol
it worked for me a day after it failed
Zanagoth wait why are we being used
Black note you waited a day after the release to play it? You have the patience of a god
So we gonna ignore the fact Ordis said “I’m happy to hear how depressed you are” lol
So wait, warframes were humans?
yea primes and prototypes were really skilled humans in certain arts of combat, normal ones arre tenno copies.
noathegod 1 Really? It only feels that Umbra were once human, this is why they work in autopilot if you go into operator mode. Primed and normal variants were copies
Its more like Sentry mode rather than Autopilot
Primes were humans too? Interesting. I Can understand Umbra frames since they must have been forced into transformation but Primes? Willful transformation?
MotoBlizzard I'm pretty sure they're just a refined version. think umbra as prototypes that failed because they still had consciousness, and primes as the final product without free will

Maybe we shouldn't hype up new quests so much.
Otherwise you'll always end up dissappointed.
