I come from 4 generations of growers, master gardeners, etc. and have never put our clippers in peroxide or alcohol. My father, who was the master gardener always put Epsom salts in the holes before planting his tomatoes. I, however, did not get the growing gene, did everything I could to not get disease and got it anyway. My suggestion, no more pruning. Just remember, 100 years ago, people just put stuff in the ground, prayed for rain and it grew. I think we need to get back to all that.

I love how great you two are at making the best of everything, and it is a real joy to watch you and your family grow (on all fronts)! I have learned lots from your gardening expeditions and I appreciate it. I have a generous garden started this year. It's but self sustaining by any means yet but it's a start and each year you learn more and get better. I've had so much fun and gratification from my garden. I just made my first batch of spaghetti sauce out of about 18lbs of tomatoes. Hoping for another batch and that should do it for spaghetti sauce over the winter hopefully :)

Are you sure the tomatoes are diseased and not just aging/coming to the end of the season plus having a tough season with the weather? I cannot see properly to tell, but Charles Dowding has talked about it in videos. He shows leaves that look bad but he says it's not disease. Yours may still be fine. As to the fruit trees, I select sites that I can get water too, and that is not a frost pocket that might get the blossoms caught in a late frost which would loose the crop. Cassie is super cute.

First year fruit or any trees need a lot of water to a depth of 3 to 4 feet about once a week (hopefully from rain). Fruit trees need about 8 hours of sunlight every day. Once tomatoes have blight, it usually will move through the plant, Trimming only slows it down especially if it wet or humid. Gardens have been challenging this year in many places.

Cassidy was so cute helping with the garden and replant the tree. I would dig a hole and plant that apple tree deeper in the earth. I love that you are planting fruit trees! I would also suggest muscadine grapes! They grow great in the southern states. Don’t feel bad you didn’t get this huge crop. It takes time to learn these skills and some years you get a better garden crop. I would diversify. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket as they say. Still think you need a goat or donkey as cow companion. 😁

Wet your Apple tree, leaves and all, and then sprinkle sevin dust on the leaves and base.Bugs were eating my apple and peach trees and that is what I did, plus watering and fertilizing it, but you have to keep on it as bugs are 10 times worse in the country. Ok good tip! When your tomato crop fails see if you can find a farmer’s market with Someone who does bulk sales of canning tomatoes. If you can’t find that then try using the bulk cans #10 cans of tomato products for canning your sauce’s for your family. As an example: spaghetti sauce, marinara, pizza sauce, or anything else! Still cheaper to buy and can than you can buy in the long run and better control of what your family eats. Especially if you have a bulk foods or restaurant supply around you. Or if you have a discount store around you like Amy Maryon uses! We don’t have anything like that close to use.

It will come back that tree. Give it regular watering. If it’s got roots it will survive. Put some cow muck in the tree hole before planting properly. That will nourish it. Seriously fruit trees are an excellent idea. 👍💖👍

Why not grow perennial flowers that you can leave or chop and drop end of season. Salvia, Rudebekia, Verbena, Echinacea purpurea (Cone Flower), Yarrow, Lupins around outside and it will bring in lots of pollinators. Also can cut and have in vase.

Interesting. I never knew there was such a thing as "ground cherries". Interesting. My neighbors and I also had no crops because we had no bees. We had to try and hand pollinate, but I read that bees don't just simply pollinate. They bring with them the energy from other plants so it makes the produce healthy and strong and nutritious to eat. My hand-pollinated zucchini was very hard even though it looked fine and full grown on the outside.

    • @MagicalSoulMindStorm

That’s a good point. Starting a honeybee hive might help vegetables taste better if you don’t see many bees around, but I wouldn’t want lots of bees either. Maybe far off in the corner of your property, away from the animals.

.How to Defeat Tomato BlightToo dry weather or to much water..Copper spray helps a lot. I've tried it, and my friends did as well. However, dont wait until the disease occurs. Spray when seedlings are around 6 inches tall (before planting), then a couple of times every 2-3 weeks (not earlier, as it will damage the plant). IT'S IMPORTANT YOU SPRAY EITHER EARLY MORNING OR LATE EVENING, SO IT DOESNT KILL THE BEES (if the spray it wet on the plant, the bees will carry it to their hive and kill other bees or the queen, which eventually weakens the colony, and if no queen, kills the hive). Ideally, its also good that it rains 3 days after the spray. The fruits can be eaten a few days after the spray.

  • @lanieleigh9970
    @lanieleigh9970 2 года назад

Alex, some of the issue with the tomatoes is sun scald not disease. They should come back if you cover them with white garden fabric/shade netting during the hottest parts of the day. The issue with the fruit tree and the chickens is they are probably after grubs in the soil. You can take a tomato cage from Lowes or Tractor Supply and snip it down the side, wrap it around the tree larger side down, use some landscape staples to hold it down to the ground and zip tie the side where you snipped it apart, and then wrap the same white garden fabric around it to keep the chickens out. You can even connect two of them together if you want a larger circle around the tree.

Get some watering bags for the base of your trees to help water them and protect the base from digging animals. You should put a protective sleeve around the bark of the tree to save them from deer rubbing against it, rubbing off the protective bark.
A lot of places have fruit trees on sale right now, to clear them out. Most have a 1-year warranty. Save your receipt, in case it does, to get a replacement tree.

If the beetles are getting in the roots, make a little ammonia water, and pour it on the roots... It will get rid of your bugs, and the chickies should leave them alone. Also, you can put metal fencing down on the ground around the tree, and stake it down... Last but not least, sprinkle black, or red pepper on the ground around the trees.... Also...don't put the mulch up on the trunk of the tree...it will make it rot... Good luck!

I just went through this with my tomato plants. Spray them with Copper Fungicide. It will help all of it including the soil.

I first found your channel when you found out you were pregnant and surprised Philip. You were shaking your hand in excitement.
You have been my regulars to watch as you bought your home, had Cassidy and started homesteading.
Keep up the good work but take some days off to reboot yourselves, maybe not a week but 2 or 3 days.😉
Good luck and may God keep blessing you daily.

You can pick the tomatoes that are not quite ripe yet and place them somewhere in the sun. They will get red, so that you can enjoy them 😊👍

I live in Southern Illinois (2 miles from KY border) and we lost our garden as well. Despite my best efforts to water and feed our garden the sun burnt it all up. I only got 2 okra and a cucumber. Very sad :(

From experience we don't use peroxide or alcohol anywhere near the plants. Epsom salts we use while planting. If the plants have dried leave we pinch them off. Would be better if you had a sprayer used that on your plants. There are many places to teach you what to use and measurements for mixing. Good luck.

I love your channel. I have been here for years. As for your garden, some years in works better than others. I only get to garden in a tiny city backyard in a much colder area than you. I grew potatoes and onions for the first time. They grew and I got to dig up more than I planted so I was happy. Other plants didn’t do as well. I’m still learning and I’m in my mid 50’s.
I buy 25 lb cases of local Roma tomatoes and peaches to can.

    Alex ..
Put the tree in a bucket of compost with the bottom cut out till it roots properly .
Chickens cant get to it then plant the whole bucket in the ground when you are happy its rooted.
My poor beefsteak tomatoes got "catface"' edible but soooo ugly we think it was the drought.
Lovin' Cassidy she's so sassy and her speech is so advanced . Mommy Alex - what a hoot!!
    Love as always xx

For us it was the green horned caterpillars that devastated my tomato plants, again 🥴, even though I had planted Marigolds and basil with them. Our peach trees on the other hand produced so much fruit, more than we can pick, so the birds get to eat some too.

Around your fruit trees put some kind of mesh or chicken wire around the trees so the chickens can’t dig it up. Put some across the top of the stuff you put around to cover the ground so the chickens don’t get to the dirt from the top.

If you put a 3rd post in around Ur fruit tree then surround it in chicken wire it should keep the chickens out of the rooting system until it's well established then you can remove it again. Love watching your journey ❤

I follow a page on Instagram where they have these bags that catch Japanese beetles to leave their plants alone. They have about 5 of them, per area, and they just empty them out and give them to their chicken to eat after crushing them a little so they don’t fly out. Maybe that can work for you guys
