I am from Barnum Island above the barrier island Long Beach. Barnum Island is an area that is a marsh island of the Town of Hempstead, along with the Village of Island Park and Harbor Isle. I miss growing up and living there as it was always so close to the water. Good times growing up on an "island within an island."

Had to say there no Nassau County in 1880. It was a part of Queens, as this map shows. When New York City grew to five boroughs in 1898, eastern Queens decided against being NYC east and became Nassau County.

From Central Islip but left right after high school. Haven’t really been back since. But, oddly, I look up Long Island stuff a lot. Not sure why. Sometimes I feel like I left the party too soon. But, my life is great and that’s probably due to my leaving New York. Weird.

Notice how parts of CT is also highlighted? Most likely that's because Long Island at one time was actually under the jurisdiction of CT. It wasn't until NYC was getting over crowded and ppl stated moving east to LI that NY finally bought the deed from CT.
