My Nan lived in the sheltered accommodation in that glorious building near the ferry landing, on that bottom corner of Borough Road - you even walked past the windows of her flat. The interior of that place was magnificent in its own way, my brother and I as young'uns would just wander around the corridors of that place - amazing. Though my parents are from the area, I grew up in Lancashire. But often spent time up here as a child. This part of North Shields is very familiar to me, when we stayed in that sheltered accommodation building in the guest apartment, my Dad took us along that stretch of road towards the fish quay many times, telling us all about the history of it. It was fascinating and me and my brother loved it. I'm sure there's a photo of me and my brother next to the wooden dolly next to the Prince of Wales pub somewhere, will have to dig that out! Thanks for this - it's also interesting to see how things are now. I've no excuse really as I live in Gateshead now, so it's just a stones throw away.
Good evening! Thank you so much for tuning in for this walk around one of the River Tyne's most famous towns: North Shields! As for some bonus info about North Shields, you may be interested to know about the nickname for its locals. England's North East is full of interesting local nicknames, from Geordies in Newcastle to Sandancers over the river in South Shields, but people from North Shields are often called 'codheads', or even 'fish knabbers' in relation to the town's long history of fishing!
Born in North Shields - worked on the fish quay as a filleter in the 1970's- love the place. Now as an author and playwright, my books and plays are about the place where I was born.
this took me back to the 90s when i lived in Wallsend/Holycross and Blyth...i used to go to Shields and the Fish Quay Festival and for days and nights out...cracking place and nice wee indoor market in the town centre..brilliant visit and great history lesson too...have a big softspot for the North East and the people...i got roped into being on the Radio One roadshow in 91 and did that bits n pieces quiz...which made it memorable too
Lived in North Shields for about 9 months before moving around and eventually moving back to America. Absolutely loved it there. Especially those seagulls that are so loud early in the morning!
I can believe it! The seagulls do add some great coastal atmosphere to the town, but North Shields really is a wonderful place, and so full of character and history that I really haven't heard a bad word about it :) Thank you so much for watching - I really hope you enjoyed this video!
I remember going into the pub called The Jungle when I was about 18 or 19 wow that was some place back then about 1970 time .we were doing a job on a ship that was in for repairs .we spent most of our time drinking whilst the ships engineers got the job sorted for us . We were going home pissed at teatime .
I worked as a bouncer in the Jungle. When Ginger Burns run the nightclub. Some mad days then. You paid a pound to get in and you got chips and beans 😂😂
You're welcome! And thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you found the video an interesting dive into the history of North Shields, a thoroughly fascinating town all over :)
That's very kind of you to say! I always love to hear your comments and stories about towns you may have visited in the past - it adds some great flavour to every comment section :) Thank you so much for watching as always - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!
Thank you so much! That really means a lot to hear - I'm so glad you're enjoying the videos, I certainly have a lot of fun making them and discovering the history of towns around the country :)
Nice walk today of the town. Very beautiful and historical. The history lesson you gave was great. Your walks are always enjoyable. Hope to see more soon have a great week. How is your week going?. Mine is great. Greetings from Canada. 😀😀
It does indeed! The High Town really is a magnificent example of Georgian and Victorian architecture from the industrial boom on Tyneside - perhaps I should do a separate walk up there! Thank you so much for watching - I really hope you enjoyed the video :)
@@LetsWalkUK I grew up there, lived next to Camp Terrace. It was a great place to grow up. Spent so many summer days at the coast. Thanks for the great video. Another trivia fact, William Harbutt who invented Plasticine was born and grew up in North Shields.
@@dawnlovejoy8917I can imagine! On gorgeous summer days the beaches at Tynemouth, Cullercoats, Whitley Bay etc are absolutely stunning - though even a walk along the Tyne from the Fish Quay to the river mouth is something I enjoyed on my visit to North Shields :) Thank you again for your kind words and that very interesting bonus bit of trivia about North Shields - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video of your home town!
That's so kind of you to say! I'm really glad you enjoyed the walk and the history - North Shields is full of riveting heritage and I certainly had a great time discovering it on this trip :) Thank you so much for watching!
Interesting as usual, we caught the to ferry to Bergen Norway from the Port of Tyne which is jusy a bit higher up the river from your walk although still classed as North Shields, sadly it no longer runs as it closed in 2008.
Thank you very much! I'm really glad you found the video an interesting watch, and indeed the ferries out of the port to Scandinavia make the Tyne always alive with activity :)
Yes I remember doing the crossing to Bergen great weather and sights of Bergen roads through the mountains and the Fiords realy enjoyed it . We then did the Stockholm one later . Lovely day going out from North shields . But a nightmare coming back with the mountainous seas crashing on the ship.the only time I've been frightened.i could see those corridors down below turning into lift shafts through the night so I went upstairs to one of the restraunts . It was full of people sleeping on the tables with the same idea as me . I spent 3 hours sitting next to the life boat petrified ..never again .
Fantastic walk and really informative and well thought out narrative - thanks I enjoyed it so much. Coming from a family who all hail from South Shields and having lived overseas since the mid 1980s Im still really drawn to Tyne and Wear. Memories of going to the fish market with my grandparents in. the 70s and tales of the North Shields fish wives are still vivid in my memory. Appreciate the effort you've put into this video. Cheers from Malaysia!

Great walk, we did it around the same time, maybe even the same day! had been to a hospital appointment and decided to have an explore, usually only walk the low town but parked right next to the High Light (the caravan was amazingly lodged in!), discovered the Stan Laurel statue but weren’t aware of the Dollies, will have to check it out again. Thanks for the history. 🙋🏻♀️
Ha ha - that might have been quite the coincidence! North Shields is a magnificent town full of hidden history - and I'm delighted to hear you had a good walk around the High Town as well as the Low Town :) Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!

Ha ha the dollies are rather an interesting characteristic of North Shields - I would be interested to see one in a more 'chipped' state from yesteryear :) Thank you very much for watching - I hope you enjoyed the video!
Just to put you straight - that is NOT fog. It is a "heat mist". It happens obviously because the sun is hot but the river is cool. My dad being a sailor, could tell the difference by looking, and knowing which was which. You usually get 'fog' in cold weather, not hot. Most people call it fog, but there is a difference ! 🙂
A very good point well made! Apologies for the mix-up there - it certainly confused me on my visit to North Shields, and not being a sailor I took it as that classic 'fog on the Tyne' I've heard so much about :) Thank you very much for watching and for that insightful comment - I do hope you enjoyed the video!
I lived in North Shields in the 70s and 80s but I left because of the amount of burglaries and crime. I’ve lived in Shields all my life 71 years and have walked those steps thousands of times as a kid and an a adult . Love my home town 😊
