- 4 All the music lovers!!! Nina Simone /ˈniːnə sɨˈmoʊn/ (born Eunice Kathleen Waymon; February 21, 1933 - April 21, 2003) was an American singer, songwriter, pianist, arranger, and civil rights activist widely associated with jazz music. She worked in a broad range of styles including classical, jazz, blues, folk, R&B, gospel, and pop.
The sixth child of a preacher's family in North Carolina, Simone aspired to be a concert pianist.[1] Her musical path changed direction after she was denied a scholarship to the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, despite a well-received audition. Simone said she later found out from an insider at Curtis that she was denied entry because she was black.[2] So as to fund her continuing musical education and become a classical pianist, she began playing in a small club in Philadelphia where she was also required to sing. She was approached for a recording by Bethlehem Records, and her rendering of "I Loves You, Porgy" was a hit in the United States in 1958.[1] Over the length of her career Simone recorded more than 40 albums, mostly between 1958, when she made her debut with Little Girl Blue, and 1974.
Her musical style arose from a fusion of gospel and pop songs with classical music, in particular with influences from her first inspiration, Johann Sebastian Bach,[3] and accompanied with her expressive jazz-like singing in her characteristic contralto voice. She injected as much of her classical background into her music as possible to give it more depth and quality, as she felt that pop music was inferior to classical.[4] Her intuitive grasp on the audience-performer relationship was gained from a unique background of playing piano accompaniment for church revivals and sermons regularly from the early age of six years old.[5]
2024 anyone?
Beauty Woman.
meeee
Yes! And also love listening to this song live, by the Pete Moore and King Creole Band 😍
Here, sir. After hearing it earlier while grocery shopping. Unexpected memory jogging bliss.
Me...too! Timeless, like Dave Brubeck's Take Five.
It's 2024 and she still rocks
More.than that
2025 anyone? ffs xD
I hear this and I smile, no matter the type of day I'm having...Thank you Nina!
My father used to work at his home-office in the very early hours of the morning when everyone was asleep in the house. He usually played music at such low volume that I sometimes thought I was either dreaming or imagining the sounds. This was one of his favorites. RIP old-man,I miss you.
Wow! This is truly beautiful story. I was imagining the scene, in old era, totally different time happening..the family atmosphere.. almost like reading a book when I read this comment. Truly beautiful, I guess Nina Simone and this song will always remind you of those memories taking you back nostalgically but heartfully..🍀
❤this!!🎉, so nice!!
❤, beautiful
Sweet❤, love this
How can anyone not love Nina?❤
Truly a timeless classic. My 7yr old was bobbing his head listening to this... What more can you ask for from an artist.. Love her. Rest in peace love and may perpetual light shine upon her soul🙏❣
"My Baby Just Cares For Me"
My baby don't care for shows
My baby don't care for clothes
My baby just cares for me
My baby don't care for cars and races
My baby don't care for high-tone places
Liz Taylor is not his style
And even Lana Turner's smile
Is somethin' he can't see
My baby don't care who knows
My baby just cares for me
Baby, my baby don't care for shows
And he don't even care for clothes
He cares for me
My baby don't care
For cars and races
My baby don't care for
He don't care for high-tone places
Liz Taylor is not his style
And even Liberace's smile
Is something he can't see
Is something he can't see
I wonder what's wrong with baby
My baby just cares for

Very easy music. But how many heart, soul and happiness In her voice. Great singer Nina Simone!
That really famous piano solo (lasing just over a minute) is perhaps the most famous in jazz and beyond. When I listen to the harmonies in that section I can hear just as much J S Bach as I can jazz. And all her influences were so well blended together to make that unique sound, that could only be Nina Simone. This is a classic that people will probably still be listening to in another 100 years.
It is truly beautiful
Jacques Loussier comes also to my mind.
DAMN right!!
Just it, pure emotion.
Wellness, listening, enjoying : it tastes like paradise.
Love the piano solo - imagine how great it would sound on a Steinway D-274
If you're here, you have good taste in music man
Yup.
Yes I have taste
So do you,lol
And women my friend, yeaaaaaaah! 😜😜😜
@@nathalieseeger643 obviously my womaaan😊
I first heard Nina Simone in 1963 or 1964 while I was a student at UNC and deeply interested in the civil rights movement. I was mightily impressed by her piano playing and her proud blackness (I am white). I heard her many times in NYC before she moved to France. She is timeless. I have introduced her children and now my grandchildren--all fans and all committed to racial justice.
I love you ❤️
Who else is still listening in 2020?!
Just now, on January 1! What better way to ring in the new year than Nina's wonderful jazz?

Sometimes I just come around to read the comments I know it sounds weird but it gives a good feeling that I´m not alone in this world who loves this song. She was a Legend in a wrong decade and did some mistakes, but her last time on earth was more then sad. May she rest in peace.....
I had to have this beautiful song played on my wedding day! Love it!
What do you mean by that;? I dont know abou her life but I always love her music. she had sad life?

Olá , o que aconteceu com ela ?
Yo era una niña la primera vez que el vídeo clip, y se me quedó grabado en la mente, ver esa gata cantando y el pobre gato muriendo de amor por ella. Nunca la he olvidado
She and Ella are the Female stars of Jazz, what a wonderful talent ! Praise the Lord for this Musical Legend !
What about Etta James ? 😊
Please, Billie in the first place
And 2022 ???

Poor Nina. So brilliant and treated so badly. She is a classic.
Yes she is, brilliant!
Lots of people are treated badly. Black people have definitely been treated badly, but other than refusing to accept it any longer, how about we all begin to heal the past?
The little that you can do in your little corner of the world goes a long way, I am definitely trying my best here in South Africa, the once cauldron of institutionalised racism. Love is the key word.
@@johnstone7579 Thanks for your comment. I adore her.
@@conniewolf7300 It's easy to call for healing when you don't have to bear the scars and the continuing burden of the mistreatment. Reparations would be a start. Until then, healing may not be your call to make.

This is a sexy, sultry, classy Bach infused contrapuntal improvisational magnificence!
Well she wanted to be a classical concert pianist but they wouldn't let her be
As my dad, 40 years + in the industry : "Bach was the cat who invented jazz, really. About three centuries too early tho."
RIP to both legends!
It sure is.
Seth Eskivias yes!
She is classically trained
One of my favorites from Nina. The Netflix documentary on Nina was enlightening about her passionate involvement in the civil rights. And that she was a classic muSician truly shows in her masterful arrangements. Rip Nina.

I love so many songs from Ms. Simone but it's nice to hear something playful from her... she had a lot of anguish and frustration in most of her music but this is a smooth, laid back bop!
I heard a really good radio show about her a long time ago. She wanted to be an opera singer. They didn’t “have” black opera singers back then. Fie. Us jazz fans sure lucked out.
Thanks for telling about it 👏👏👏
@@lisasilverman3456 It was as a classical pianist that she trained and intended to work, NOT an opera singer. (Not only were there African American opera singers in the 1950s and 60s, African American opera singers date back as far as the 19th century.)
In 2022...still appreciate her voice❤
you might like Elle Fitzgerald: Cry Me A River.... its a great track and WOW what a voice!!

None like this! What about her piano skills!!!!
Played at my father’s funeral. He and his friends played this song for a charity concert at Lincoln theatre royal.
He was. On he piano.
I saw Nina sing this song at the Village Gate back in the mid-1960's and she tore the house down! WHAT A TALENT ! She sure can "tickle them ivories."
till they gleam!
I'd never heard of Nina till my daughter brought a CD home from the library. She went on about how soulful she was. I just didn't get it at first. Then it clicked. She was totally awesome! There is no one like Nina.
I have a sad heart at the moment, but this song just pulls me right up to the sky.
BRILLIANT..
Just a BRILL voice & performer & person
Take Care of your heart, yourself! 💙
@@PinkyPuff69 Oh, Sorry! I didn't pay attention about the time... I hope everything is great now! Yes, it's an amazing song. Today, Februay, 21, was 88° Nina's Birthday, If she was still alive in this Planet. Best regards from Brazil!

Hope you are having a great day 😘 sending love and light ✨ sorry to bother just thought you'd like listening to this one again 😉 I know I do!
Sorry to be vain but my great uncle Walter co wrote this with Gus Khan back I think in the fifties. Died before I was born but my grandfather met him once during a stop over in the U.S. I can’t take credit but still makes me proud, best wishes, Stuart Donaldson X
My favorite song she sings BY FAR! Her piano playing was as exquisite as the rest of her. Simple, in this case, and yet spot on.
Nina Simone uma artista sincera.
Através de sua voz um sentido profundo do pesar, das lutas de ser mulher, negra e ter consciência do seu papel no mundo.
I grew up listening to this lady. It's such a shame she couldn't receive the recognition she should have (bipolar issues and that idiot husband). She was to music what Bessie Coleman was to flight, she just took you away! ! ! A virtuoso! A diva!
crying shame she wasnt protected from the asshole, her bi polar symptoms would of been far less worse with a loving and supportive man by her side , love you Nina
well said she was greatest jazz singer ever period

chibanyc25 agreeeeed!!
Piano is her weapon and her voice is pure sugar on top
Such a talent ... If I could just bring her some more HAPPINESS
I know what you mean... and at the same time, part of the blessing of Nina Simone was how she used her feelings, both positive and negative, to create her own beauty and happiness. It doesn't make it fair; but it is a testament to the immense gift she held. And we are the lucky recipients of the joy she created when it was denied her by the world. I like to think it brought her peace and joy as well.

Back in 1962 I was 21, driving cab in Philly. I'd get off around 2am and take the street car down Girard, getting off at 28th to wait for the night bus. There was an all-night cafe there. I generally had about a 25 minute half hour wait. I'd go in and get a hamburger and a cup of coffee. The juke box was loaded! I'd drop my quarter and play Nina, Miles, Cannonball, Ray, Etta. Oh, yeah. What a juke box! Six for a quarter! But I'd always play this cut twice. One of the GREAT songs of the 20th Century and Bach would have loved it, too. Thank You, Nina - Love you forever for this. God Bless your Soul, Nina. I'm sorry you had to pay such a price to be so Great. But Thank You, Thank you, Thank You!

Yes we do. I have a friend who pours just as much of his mind, body and soul into music as Nina did. Admittedly in a different genre, namely baroque, but then Nina also started in classical music and turned to jazz only after being rejected by the white establishment.

This is the most innocent head nodding track in history. Speaking of which, how come no one's pointed the pianist's head nod to 'Heart and Soul' in the beginning tropes of the solos? It's so sweetly and subtly there, no? For every time two people have sat the instrument side by side and played Heart and Soul, if someone were to have been there to sing Nina's way on this song, it would redeem all that ubiquitous nonsense and make it truly sweet as it should be.
