(The ump calling that "unintentional." It hit him for goodness sake - he made no attempt at leaping or avoiding -- it's fine, if he just wants to block the view )

If it is deliberate, it's so smooth that it fooled me. Either truly unintentional, smiling because he realized what that would mean, or he's a genius actor.
Rizzo is an exceptionally-aware player. This was 100% intentional and an insanely impressive effort to make it look like an accident.

@@Jomskylark because Rizzo is too smart to get hit by a ball like that on accident. He knew the ball was hit on the ground, otherwise he wouldn’t have run. So he saw where it was going and would have made some effort to avoid it if he didn’t want it to hit him. He knew exactly what he was doing.
@@albertchatigny2223Weren’t there runners at 1st and 2nd, in which case Rizzo _did_ have to run, or else he would have been forced at 3rd? I hate the Yankees as much as anyone, but assuming it was intentional (and I agree it likely was), he did a damned good job of hiding his intentions.

If the runner didn't break stride and didn't even look at the ball, that means that the runner did not allow the ball to hit him on purpose.

Yes it should be legal. I compare this to a football rule that's gone across shorts a few times. A kick-off that lands just in bounds, but let's say at 5, receiver can step out of bounds, make contact with the ball, therefore making the ball out of play, moving the spot up to the 25.
Knowing the rules and using them to your advantage without breaking them is not cheating, it's strategy.

The narrator is wrong. Rizzo is out if judged to be unintentional. So, definitely not a base hit; FC as you point out. If judged to be intentional, Rizzo is out and batter-runner is out; double play.

While on the topic. If a batted ball is in reach of an infielder's glove and gets past him, even without touching his glove or body, and then strikes a runner, he is not ruled out. I'm sure of this and assume that the ball is still in play. That part I'm not positive of, but it seems logical. Funny, cuz I'm guessing that the runner, after being struck, and either not knowing the rule, or not even seeing how it got past the fielder, or not hearing an umpire yelling anything, might just freeze up thinking he is out. Sounds like a complicated situation. Lol

@@brendanb870did you know that the teams who lead in double plays also lead in scoring runs? It may sound counter intuitive, but if you think about it, it makes sense. Teams who lead in double plays have to have runners at least on first base, many times like this video in scoring position. They therefore also get caught the most in double plays because they have the most runners on base. So while double plays can kill momentum on scoring, they're also a good indicator of how often a team is getting on base. And teams who lead in OBP statistic typically also lead in scoring runs. It's basically impossible to stop getting into double plays if you want your team to score runs. Teams will even allow a run to score, like in a first and third situation, to get two outs. You want your team to lower their double play balls, but to be last in double plays would also be equivalent to being last in scoring runs. As I said they usually go hand in hand.

That's fine. As stated he never broke his stride or looked to see exactly where the ball was. He just took his chances and tried to be where the ball was going to be. What I DON'T get is why it was scored a hit. If anything it should be a fielder's choice. Risso was out everyone else moved up one base, and if the ball hadn't hit him you can't assume a double play but you can assume they make the out at second base.

@thirdlegstalliano That only matters if you are trying to score the game by the dictionary. It's irrelevant if you go by the rules as written. The rules dont require someone to literally make a choice. There are 3 circumstances listed for when a fielder's choice is scored.
Scorers use the term in the following ways:
to indicate the advance of the batter-runner who takes one or more bases when the fielder who handles his batted ball plays on a preceding runner;
to indicate the advance of a runner (other than by stolen base or error) while a fielder is trying to put out another runner; and
to indicate the advance of a runner due to the defensive team’s refusal to play on him (an undefended steal).
Obviously the SS was attempting to make a play and was going to put out a runner, if not two, but you can't assume a double play. You CAN assume the defense would have cut down the lead runner or first trailing runner. Risso took the decision out of his hands by putting himself out. It would obviously be a fielder's choice if Risso was between the SS and second base when the ball was fielded making the only play to either tag out or force out the lead runner. The shortstop wouldn't have actually "chosen" to cut down the lead runner instead of going for another play. He was just forced to by circumstance. That's in practice the exact same result of the play as it occurred. The lead runner forced the infield to take the out on him instead of any other baserunner or baserunners.
There probably should be an actual scoring for this exact circumstance, but since there apparently is not it's pretty silly to assume the result of the play was going to be an infield hit which you should be able to acknowledge is about the LEAST likely outcome had the ball not struck the runner.

This right here is why I love Rizzo. I'm not even a Cubs or Yankees fan (Or Padres fan). Watching him execute the fundamentals and making high IQ plays is just perfection.

I remember Carl Yastrzemski did this when he was on first base and Orlando Cepeda who was very slow hit a grounder towards second, yaz you could tell deliberately let the ball hit him, it was so obvious but he did it to avoid a sure double play, yaz was called out

I feel like that this should be situational like with fielding. Since infielders aren’t allowed to intentionally drop a line drive or pop-up to get a double play, I don’t think base runners should be able to stop play like this to break up a double play
Can you prove intent though? It doesn't look like he intentionally blocked the ball, it looks exactly the same as any other time he runs to third. I think if you're just running and the ball hits you it's not your fault, it would be different if he slowed down and let it hit him
You can intentionally drop the ball anytime. It’s up to the umps to call an infield fly rule.

I did this one time too. My dad was pissed. He didnt think they had a chance of turning two.
In my opinion, all the rules about a batter ball hitting a runner/throne ball hitting a runner should only apply if the ball is in the air. If it bounces then hits the runner it’s considered an error or if it’s a throw then it’s just bad luck if it’s directly off the back.
Well if it's thrown the runner has the right to the base path so doesn't even have to make an attempt to get out of the way of the ball

Dude was looking right at it slowed down and didn't even start running until it was close then left his back foot extended a bit to long. He's a professional and it was done on purpose, man on first and second you go full speed on contact if it's on the ground. People saying it was an accident never played baseball 😂

The referenced ruling refers to “the batter-runner” who is the runner who was the batter on the play. Rizzo, here, is a runner, not the batter-runner. The result of the rule would be that the runner AND THE FURTHEST ADVANCED RUNNER would be out, who is Rizzo, so the result of this is that Rizzo would be out… twice? Idk, this seems like a fine outcome. Hit runner is out, batter takes first base and pushes all other runners along.

calling this a double-play would be VERY difficult to justify with the wording of the rule. the interference must be "willful and deliberate for the obvious purpose of breaking up a double-play". it's really tough to get that from just running in a straight line without breaking stride
in high school rules? sure, automatic double play. but in college and mlb you need clear intent.
Even if they get the call right, there's still a runner on 2nd. Absolutely allow it. Loopholes don't always need to be closed for there to be a fair and fun game.

Rizzo is a really bright player. Probably the 6th time I've seen him work the rules or make a smart play to help hid team.
This is a legal play in all baseball. IF the batted ball strikes a runner, the ball is dead, the runner is out, and the batter is awarded first base.
If it's not a double play ball, base runners are cognizant of where the ball is and will seek to avoid contact. He definitely knew what he was doing.

I thought the mlb rule book stated that a runner off base struck by a batted ball was out.
My only complaint is that it counts as a hit cause that doesn't make sense.
Maybe have it as a separate type of result or maybe even not count as a plate appearance or something. The odds are incredibly low but could you imagine losing a no hitter on that type of play?
Anthony Rizzo is one of the smartest players in baseball. The SOB has read the rulebook cover-to-cover looking for crap like this. I can't tell you how impressed I am by the guy. And the umpires should not have ruled this "unintentional."

To me, it's the difference between going out of your way to get in the way, versus not going out of your way to get out of the way. I don't think you can legislate the latter out of this rule without doing the same for countless others, especially HBP and trying to avoid getting hit rather than bracing.

Yes, the runner (Rizzo) was out, but by doing so he prevented a double play. A 1 for 2 trade if you will. Kept the inning going with a guy on 1st and 2nd.

In a little league game i was on 2nd running to third and a line drive hit me in the leg. Wasn't on purpose. Hurt like hell. And they called me out. I was mad, and everybody said i was wrong and was out. Glad to know 20 years later I can confidently say that I shouldn't have been called out. lol

It was good baseball IQ, very good acting. He actually did look at the ball for the path of the path of the ball. While running ti 3rd😢, not breaking stride and not constantly looking at the ball, he got away with it. Should be reviewable.
Seems like if he did anything deliberately it was to take a chance that he would be hit by the ball without knowing it would definitely hit him. But you can't really prove intent if the player doesn't do anything specifically unusual during the play.
To which, I think you have to let it play as incidental contact.
