At Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Marching Bands take on a revered, mythical status and is the stuff that home football games and Homecomings are made of. Bands are a distinctive part of the HBCU culture and their melodic blend of trumpets, cymbals and drums all come together to make the soundtrack of your favorite HBCU. Black college bands have always been famous for their enthusiastic routines and in some instances and within the campus cultures of their universities, the spectator popularity of HBCU bands sometimes eclipses the entertainment of the football game itself.
All that said. We were faced with a daunting challenge here: Formulating a list of an elite 10 HBCU bands…
So this is what we did. We checked out halftime shows… memorable homecoming performances… and even a handful of showcases like the Honda Battle of the Bands and National Battle of the Bands. We even got a little help from a couple of websites that we put down in the Description Box below.
What we have come up with is the best of the best. And we analyzed everything from song arrangement to showmanship. Drill formation, choreography, flag routines, drum majors, percussion, poise, class… and of course: SWAG!

Alabama State & Alabama A&M represent quite well . I see Tuskegee made the list.
All the HBCU Bands are the baddest bands in the land! Believe that! Respect for all of them.
I’m 60+ years young and I really don’t care to see any style of marching other than what we called High stepping,, that Corp style works my last nerve watching that by the number up down stuff,, yes , we can do that by the number 8 to 5 stuff and do,,, the difference is HOW!!! And it’s gonna be funky if done right,!!!!

Absolutely! So much love for each and every one even the ones that didn't make this list because they are my people and just amazing in every way. Band is in my family and I have nothing but respect for this! Something about the soul we bring to the game!💙💙💙💙💙💙

Hey, Brooklyn has Medgar Evers College which is an HBCU but I don’t know anyone that has actually gone there
Glad you enjoyed seeing the video but it was an insult to the best band in the country, and that is SU Southern University of Louisiana. They have always been the sound and the Blue Print of what a real HBCU band should be. I really stating facts, you should look up some of there games, Parades and Battle of the bands against GSU Grambling University they always mop the floor with them.

My son's HBCU is Lane College & he's the 🥁section leader. They're too small to make such a list, but I'm EXTREMELY proud of him & of them! I'm just an ALL HBCU FAN! I LOVE US!!!

I agree with you I am from Alabama the capital so Tuskegee is about 30 minutes away from where my folks live at but I know very much about Lane College my high school sweetheart he went to Lane College he started there on a basketball scholarship. I was very impressed with Lane college that was back in 2000. Yes proud of your son he better work!!!!💯 and I hope you completely embarrass him and yell as loud as you can 😂😅😅🤣
I dn't about today, but a couple of years ago when Dr Owens & Dr Hughes were in charge of Lange College's band, they were one of the best in the lane. World famous.

My uncle went to FAMU. He taught music and was the band director at several high schools throughout his career, and taught that same passion and discipline to his students. It was wonderful to see his high school marching band play some of the HBCU cadences out of respect in the thanksgiving parade. Many students were inspired and went to HBCUs after graduation. Its is a proud tradition and legacy.
You don't know how hard this is unless you played in band. Love them all.
This made me cry. The history… the excellence… the culture. My HBCU -VSU - wasn’t named among the greats, but I loved it! HBCU loves is real! 🧡💙

Warms my heart to read all of the comments about the student section at Tuskegee ! Yes it is lit and has always been that way since I was there in the 80's. We didn't "Ball & Parlay" back then, but we do now! Congrats to all of the other amazing HBCU bands on and off this list! You all are amazing!!!!

I don't know what the criteria was for the rankings, but SU (HumanJukebox) will never be 9th especially on this list. I'm willing to put SU against any collegiate band song for song any day...and I'll only use the 🦀s...that's how confident I am about my band.

My son plays percussion at our little rural middle school here in Southern lllinois. I keep showing him HBCU videos because I want him to see how lit band could be if he picks the right college.

One thing I can tell you about Tuskegee. The band isn't as big as it was back in the 90's and early 2000's, but they've ALWAYS done a great job with student/fan interaction!!!

Where is TSU, Tennessee State University? We should have been on this list. I love all these bands! I am a huge fan of HBCU bands and the majorette teams!
The fact that Tennessee State is not top 3 or on the list is crazy. TSU performed at the 2022 Rose Bowl, performed at the White House for former President Obama, halftime at the Lakers' game, and so many other accolades.
First I would like to say CONGRATULATIONS to these very talented and hard working young men and women who are true unsung heroes. In my opinion a lot of people really don’t understand the hard work and dedication these young people go through in order to do the great job in which they do for their team’s halftime show. Once again I will say a big CONGRATULATIONS to all of those seen in this video and to all the other young musicians all over the world beit in Elementary, Junior High, High School or College 👍👍😀😀

Living in predominant white state in the northwest of United States, iam happy to view all the HBCs marching bands. It gives me pride to watch our brothers and sisters perform exceptional well during their performances. So to me they're all number ones.
The nostalgia I received from this was needed! So much talented in this video and at several HBCUs.

What I love the most is the fact they are playing NCAT band in the background at the beginning. But they should have said in no particular order bc it is really opinion based. I like most of the bands on the list probably would switch out a few.
FAMU and BCU will be in the "City Beautiful" Orlando next month, can't wait.
I can NOT believe watching this video made me cry! When Florida A & M placed at #2 did it. As a kid I grew up watching only college football in Miami because that's all there was. The annual Orange Blossom Classic game featured FAMU, played in the Orange Bowl. How we thrilled going to watch them play and march! With this kind of special feeling for FAMU (and Bethune, as the occasional opponent) carried over to my college years later on. I needed a History course one semester at Florida State, across town in Tallahassee. I chose from the FSU Course Catalogue a class in Black History. It was actually held in a building at FAMU, taught by Dr. James Eaton, an outstanding FAMU professor. My respect and love for that campus, students and the university are true.

When I first came to the UNITED STATES 🇺🇸 in 90s, I started to watch HBCU bands. It was amazingly nice. Used to watch it on NBC and ABC. Ladies were natural. No wig hair and skinner. HBCU should bring it back on the national TV 📺 😀 🙄

As a Tuskegee University and MCP Alumna I’m thrilled to see them on this list. I also knew that the song shown would be “Ball and Parlay”. I also would like to note that I’ve been to many different colleges and universities for their homecomings, and TU’s homecoming is by far the best one to attend. I’m not just saying that because that’s my Alma Mater either. If you know, you know. 🐯❤️💛

@@yolandaosborne1848 That’s what I said! In my book, SU is #1 and JSU is #2. All other bands are far far behind. But, even if you don’t rank SU #1, they should at the very least be top 3! I think that’s fair.
Everyone don’t necessarily like the same things. You still have to recognize excellence!
So now a person opinion can't be based on what they think but what someone else thinks, if you think your band should be number one that's your opinion. You can make up someone else mine. If they came and saw all the bands in person they're still entitled to their own opinion.
All HCBU should have been recognized in some way.

Well I see my school's band Grambling State was in the top 3, but I say Southern should've gotten that #1 spot! But congrats to all the HBCU bands that are and are not on the list! I have much HBCU PRIDE! Grambling grad Class of 2000 (Fall).

Wow BCU #1. As a Floridian I am proud to see 2 bands from FL take the top 2 spots. As a band geek from the 80's (I played French Horn/Mellophone) I am sad to see Grambling State as in third place. In the 80' GSU was the band to beat. Thanks for posting this it brought tears to my eyes...

Southern have the best sound but their drum line is not up to par. Southern drum line is line an high-school. Look at NC a&t, BC and Norfolk St and you cane the difference.
