I was wandering what DAP to buy up to 1000$ ended up with this one, my final thought was that I dont need to waste money for expensive DAP just for one pair of IEM's. My full sized headphones got their own amps and Im not walking around with them so it was pointless. R4 is all that I need without being stupid and pay extra for some bricks that are not really portable
Nice review as is the norm for you. I concur with most everything you said. I really do enjoy it more with IEMs and like it OK with the Radiance. I don't have an HEKse and no way was I going to even bother with the Susvara, ha. I found the same to be true too regarding the power output for full size headphones not being quite enough, but as stated earlier, it is great for IEMs especially when using the balanced output. R4 is an excellent entry point into the world of DAPs, the R4 was a catalyst for me personally as I've already bought two additional DAPs further up the tier ladder but, I still enjoy the heck out of the R4. The R4 and a Aful Explorer or Letshuoer S08 as an example could give you a great portable setup for under $500.
I disagree with you. This player is the best source I’ve found for my Edition XS. Through the balanced output, it drives them better, with more dynamic range and holography than Hifiman’s EF400. The idea that it can’t properly amplify full-size headphones simply isn’t true. Its 525mW and Class A amplification provide both quantity and quality.
Which dac / headphone amp would you recommend for mixing mastering ? Need near perfect monitoring with the less coloration possible Thinking about lynx Hilo 2 or topping but topping doesn’t seem natural just great measurements
I've not heard the Lynx and I agree Topping would not be a good tool. For very neutral, natural, reliable sound I'd look into Geshelli Labs J2S with Sparkos opamps for the DAC and Lake People G111mk2 for the amp.
I'm looking to upgrade from Pioneer XDP 300 this looks great for me considering the price. I have concerns about battery life and whether it will heat up. I heard in one review that those were two problems What is your experience with those two issues?🤔
It gets warm but not hot and the battery life is not great when using balanced and the screen is a bit dim when your outside in bright sunlight. On the other hand it sounds fantastic and has plenty of apps and it is easily the best DAP in the price bracket.
I can barely run HD 600’s from the 3.5mm output. High gain, 100% volume. It definitely doesn’t sound bad, but I can tell they still want more power to sound right. Planning on getting a cheap $20 balanced cable for them soon
I just bought one BECAUSE of the styling lol. Love the Orange version personally. It gives me Anime Tech vibes, like something you would see in Evangelion or even a Digivice.
One of the most useless reviews I've ever seen. A lot of words and useless chatter and the device half the time with the display fixed on the home page and the other half off. There is no way to see how to see Albums, Artists, Tracks, covers...nothing at all...

Best value DAP of the year

Prof. Wave Theory, thank you for a wonderful review of this digital audio player! 👌

Can it install and run apple music streaming? Is it open Android system?

Can it play Wav files? Thx dude!
Good testing, but why no dynamic HP with HD600/50?
After it's meh performance with Radiance and inadequate handling of Ananda Nano, there was no need. I'd stick with IEMs on this unit.
Your son has a backbone. Tell him how it is, kid!

I heard the same thing 🪫 🔋

I only wish it had a bypass battery for power like fiio. And that is the only reason I will get the fiio m23 over this hiby r4.
The Fiio m23 is $700 which is $450 more than the R4 so you'd assume it would have more features
It can be connected to a DAC via USB-C to COAX cable - The USB-C LO support SPDIF.
Thank you
hey wave theory, a question for you. Can the device (Hiby R4) be used with wireless earphones?
Yes
Would this be able to drive the 150 ohm (high sensitivity) HD 620S properly on the 3.5mm single ended output? Thank you!
I wasn't able to try to confirm but I have strong doubts.

@@mcpudd-20k they are pretty „hard“ to drive! 300 ohms and only 97db sensitivity isn’t exactly easy.
I would get one of these if it weren't for the styling.
The black is beautiful! Just got mine today (9/3/24).
