very insightful tips! i wanted to add a small detail to this fantastic mini masterclass by Mike. i had the opportunity to play this excerpt for Boris Allakhverdyan of the LA Phil, and he was very insistent that I should tongue the notes after the trills in the first movement solos. for example, 4 measures after rehearsal mark A, to tongue the C after the E to F trill, and 5 measures after A, to tongue the B after the D to E trill. Boris, in general, always heard if you didn't tongue something that was supposed to be tongued, and I know this cuz (although I didn't officially study with him) he was one of the two clarinet professors in our clarinet studio :)
Great lesson! Any chance you would consider posting the written-out trill and other exercises you showed? Visuals are geta for learning and practicing.
Wonderful Michael! Thanks for sharing. However, both Gigliotti and George Silfies recommended using the side Ab key and/or the C-D trill key in the beginning because…. The accompaniment is Dah dut dut Dah dut dut. We want to not accentuate the high D. Just food for thought! I always LOVE your helpful videos and often share them with my students!!!
Yes. Had a master class with Gigliotti and remember that. But my teacher in college (bonade student as well) adamant about playing “natural” fingerings. (LONG D).
Hello Mr. Earspasm Music! I am curious to hear your opinions on Yvonne Desporte’s “Andante and Allegro” for bass clarinet. A video on stylistic decisions in the Andante section and advice on the pinky finger spaghetti in the Allegro section would be super cool to hear!
Of course, weighing in with opinions on the female composers of yester-year, such as this piece would be interesting assertions to have your opinions on as well.
You will not advance beyond the first round of any professional audition if you do NOT follow this advice......especially if your sound is exceptionally bright.
