I'm not in the military, but in a band. We had years without a drum major, and now we have one. If we needed to turn around, we always did the other sort of counter (every section makes a tight right-side U-turn, and we end up mirrored).
The drum major tried to teach us this counter, and tried to get it so that each line ends up being complete at the same time, but here I see that the "problem" we encountered, is typical to this movement: the section that's here called Element 1, ends up being later to the row than the other 2. I am younger and taller than most of the other band members, and during practice I was at the left front, so I took massive steps to be able to end up equal with the 2 others, but the smaller people couldn't take those big steps, and it's pretty exhausting for the elders to manage the speed. I guess I'm going to show him this, and that it's normal that left ends up catching up to the middle and right

In army basic training, we had the similar counter column march. It was given when the formation was in column format as opposed to line format. The 4 squad/single file/element leaders of the platoon each knew what they had to do to execute this drill movement. The command could be given at the march or from the halt. I was not a squad leader so I just followed the guy ahead of me. If the file/squad leader goofed, well, the drill sergeant would be on his ass. Amry units following basic training rarely if ever employed this drill movement. It's the easiest thing in army drill and ceremonies to screw up if the squad leaders don't know what they are doing.
