- In Oct. 1989, Michael Jackson came to Gardner St. Elementary School in Hollywood for a dedication of the school auditorium in his name. Michael attended the school in his youth. This is the uncut version of the tape that went home afterwards with the students. It includes Michael's comments to the gathered crowd and his interaction with the kids in the classroom. Very true. Michael said that he saw Mrs. Fine like a second mother because he was always on the road away from his own mom. He even said during an interview how him and Janet would pay for their utilities. It broke his heart when her senility declined; and she could no longer recognize him as she advanced in her geriatric age 💔
His former teacher, Mrs, Gurson, said it all; along with all of his magnificent talents, what's most admirable about Michael is his kindness, his generosity of spirit, and his willingness to help those who are less fortunate.

It's so sweet to see him visit his old school and see the children. Usually celebrities now would care less about visiting their old schools or go to events like this unless if money is involved. Michael was such a sweet and caring person and was truly one of a kind

Here is a man that was a beloved child and student there, and he went on to become magnificently famous worldwide not only for his talent but for his humanitarianism of which he exhibited since the age of 14. Those foolish enough to forget that he came from very humble beginnings, was ALREADY FAMOUS in his profession of 25 years; truly don't know that He was ALWAYS caring, empathetic, sensitive, loving, courteous, humble, intelligent, and giving. I was in the first row from left to right 3rd little girl next to girl wearing black dress, I have great memories of my childhood at that school, Michael was the most memorable memory there. Thanks for asking. Along with my classmates in the chorus we had the pleasure of meeting Michael, it was pretty rad in that time.

I remember when this kind of media was ALL you ever saw of Michael Jackson. Awards, merit, charity unmatched. UNMATCHED. He was what our parents insisted we try to emulate. His music was universally "great to listen to" by our parents, and our schools. I remember this so well. I remember these points so much more than anything else I have seen in just the last 15 years. And that stuff should be easier to remember, as it is closer to now. I think because it was so trivial to the point that was Michael Jackson.
This is what I remember. It may not be what others remember, it is just me. I was lucky enough to live in the time where the man and artist was more important than the bizarre and exploited.

That older woman he hugs at the end was the tutor for the Jackson 5 and they loved her very much. When Michael was a sixth grader at Gardner Street Elementary, I was an eighth grader at W. H. Jones Jr High and I couldn’t have imagined having a person at my school making number one hit records. We were freaking out about the Jackson Five in 1969/70 from Mississippi, so I could just imagine how they felt having one of the members of the group in their classroom.

I'm her today because it's Michael's birthday and I was one of the ushers at this dedication. My son attended this school and he was so elated that Michael was going to be there. My son was a huge fan of Michael and so was I so I made sure I bought him one of those red jackets (a duplicate of the one Michael wore) they were very popular then. I told my son to take the jacket to the dedication to see if Michael would autograph it. My son 's teacher was controlling the kids so he didn't get a chance to ask him but I got the jacket and stepped away from my post and handed the jacket with a felt pen to Michael and asked if he would autograph it for my son AND HE DID! My son is grown now but I still have that jacket. I don't think the event was highly publicized because for a star like Michael, there were not that many people there. There were a few inside and out but not like the whole city showed up.
