    Horse Drawn Promotions - Breaking horses to harness. www.horsedrawnp... This pair of Shetlands suffered a mishap with a wheel coming off a carriage - we have managed to get them back in harness but we couldn't guarantee them. This video shows us driving them with their owners on the carriage, through the water, in the fields and on the road. As with most things, finance is a problem so we have advised that their owners put them to and drive them steadily around their farm. If they can manage to do this with no mishaps we will then visit them to check their progress, and if satisfied, we will then assist their owners in taking them out on the public highway.

    Once again a brilliant video. Nice to see you schooling Shetlands!
    Love it how you are always so honest with the owners.

    I have a mare that drives lovely, but now I need to train my son's 2 Shetlands. One is to be a driving pony, the other seems better suited for a saddle horse. I'm super excited to get them going this year, they're both 3 now.

    @gypsy842 Thanks for your comment - we believe every horse is an individual and that there is no "A-Z" method of breaking that works with every horse, because the best method for one may not be suitable for another. However one thing that Barry always says is to make sure you consolidate every stage before moving on to the next one (i.e. make sure your pony is completely happy with whatever you ask him to do before introducing anything else).

    Your videos have really inspried me to start driving. I've been taking my best friends shetland out a few times but she tends to want to turn into every other road that leads off the one I'm on.
    The pony has not been driven for a few years before I started but used to compeat a few years ago. She did the same thing then. She also jumps (almost rears) up whenever she does not get her way.
    The family is info bitless so we drive her in the same heapice that we use to bring her in from the field.

    strong little things, aren't they. 3 big adults and a carriage, it's got to be like 700 or 800 lbs altogether, maybe more

    Why does the one on the right hold his head so high? It looks uncomfortable. Is he just tense or does he have an overcheck or something?

    • @barryhook2
      @barryhook2  8 лет назад +3

      No we never drive in overchecks - often shetlands can have trouble with their mouths (big teeth and not enough jaw room!) so it may be that he needed his teeth looking at but the owners came to drive before the vet was due - this pair came to us some time ago so I can't remember the exact circumstances (sometimes owners get their dentist to do teeth, sometimes we have to book ours to come and do them).

      +barryhook2 Glad To hear you don't drive with overchecks! They often do more harm than people realize, I've seen a couple sticky situations because of them. Thanks for the answer!
