Can you root zinnias in water?
Taking cuttings is really easy. All I do first, is make a cut below one of the leaf nodes. ... If too much bacteria grows in the water, the zinnia stems will quickly turn to mush and rot away. If done properly, they'll start growing roots.
Can you take cuttings from zinnias?
Cut the stem into sections with minimum 2-3 buds. Strip leaves from bottom buds and leave some leaves on the cutting. Root in well draining soil. A tall zinnia plant can produce 6-8 cuttings.
Should you pinch out zinnias?
Thin out the seedlings, so you end up with one plant every 12in (30cm) or so. You can also sow into modules (I use coir Jiffy's), so there's no pricking out, and plant out when still small with only a pair or two of true leaves. That way you minimise root handling.

I've always has a very difficult time pinching anything back, even though I know it's better for most plants. I hate throwing anything away, even though it all goes in the compost piles. The fact that I can root the cut part to get another plant was really eye opening! I love that you usually are able to show the results in the same video. I'll definitely be pinching and re-rooting my zinnias and cosmos seedlings this season. Thank you for posting these videos and sharing your experiences, and I hope you enjoy your gardening year in 2022 😊
Loved the ice cube tray idea
thank you Kathryn!
I suppose if I started my seeds earlier in the year I could try this. For some reason this year I could not find the ambition to start my seeds. So they were directly sown into the garden this year. Let's just say, that my Zinnias were not at their finest. There could be a number of factors as to why but it was a tough season for gardeners in my area.
I am pleased that these beauties bring you joy and happiness. Peaceful gardening to you
I do this with my Coleus but now I'm definitely doing this with my Zinnias! Btw thanks Diane your videos from seed start to planting in your garden are great, keep'em coming!
thanks for stopping by! Good luck!
great a idea, i might use a disposable plastic cup with a hole in the center where a straw would be and use that hole to put my cutting in.
Great idea! good luck to you that should work just fine..🌼
I plant zinnias outdoors on April 1st. Im on zone 10. I didnt know u could root zinnias cuttings! I will try that for sure. Thank you for the tips on growing these "mystic" flowers . I enjoy ur videos!
thank you and good luck growing Zinnias..🌼🌼🌼
Thanks so much for sharing this with us! I really enjoy zinnias. I will be trying this first chance I get.
Hope you enjoy it! good luck Linda.. easy to do..
Brilliant! Thank you for the demo, going to do this with my seedlings shortly. I thought I would make a rooting tray by wrapping a couple of layers of clear food wrap around a tray, then punching a tiny hole for each seedling, push each seedling through its hole, and then put water in the tray. If the tray is clear, I should be able to monitor the progress of the roots. Thank you!
thank you! that sounds interesting... good luck to you!
Thank you for sharing.

That's really exciting! I'm glad to know it worked so good so I'll think I'll try it. Thanks for sharing!
thanks Pat.. yes it is easy and works great... good luck!
Thanks for the great information. Could the curling be due to the shallow ice cube tray? Maybe experiment with a deeper dish so the stems don’t rest on the bottom. I’m growing zinnias from seed for the first time. I’ll root my pinchings and let you know!
Thanks for the input that’s a good thought and could very well be the issue. Thank you.
i thought the same thing.
Always great videos! Thanks
Thanks again!
I'm so excited to know you can root zinnias in water. I have 2 year old seeds and not all of them have germinated . Glad I can make more plants from my sprouted ones. 👍❤️
Wonderful! good luck growing!
I loved this and will do the same, thanks so much. I grew them 1st time last year and fell in love with them, even saved the seeds for this years, hope they grow but I planted them three days ago so I'm excited. Love the ice cube tray, so smart.

You're welcome!
Ty great info
Glad it was helpful!
Very nice! 😎
Thanks for the visit
amazing video! i have 3 questions- 1) how many true leaves did your zinnia seedlings have before you made these cuttings? 2) what brand of soil are you using? 3) i currently have 3-4 zinnias with true leaves in each 3”x3” cell, should i thin it so that there is only one zinnia seedling in each cell?
thank you!!
1) thinking 4 true leaves .. 2) I use a pro mix I get at my local big box Menard's store. 3) You can either thin and transplant into a new cell.. which may be best.. but I have also separated as I plant some times but harder on them to adjust however.. hope that helps!
I root mine in potting soil
I always say whatever works for you... there is different techniques with same outcome.. good luck!
Great idea! Zinnias are butterfly magnets! What kind of rooting hormone?
Hi, there was no need for rooting hormone as they root easily in water..
That is amazing!
thanks Paula, I just love finding ways to not waste .. in the past I would of just tossed these..
Excellent video, the only suggestion I would make is to show us what part of the plants you cut this from did you get multiple cuttings from one stem or is each piece from a different plant?
Thank you I may have had a couple cuttings from each stem depending on the size of the cutting it can be done.. most though I feel that I just cut the tops off I pinched them back and use them and rooted them.
Can you give me a link to the fertilizer you used on the zinnia seedlings?
HI Penny, I use something fairly mild amzn.to/3OLv8DF, but have used a light solution of miracle grow as well this type works best with more established plants.. amzn.to/45mob1q You really don't need to do this until you transplant them ..
