- At last ... "Cargo Culte", Melody Nelson's finale.
Originally an alternative take of the first song but the result was so good that S. Gainsbourg and J.C. Vannier decided to include it as a separate piece and finish the album with it. The playing and the tone are very different compared to the first track due to the fact that Dave Richmond mainly plays close to the bridge. I guess the french sound engineer JC Desmarty also had to lower the low frequencies to not jam the mix, especially towards the end.
About the harmony : as for the first track the main structure is composed of four major chords but Dave Richmond also includes minor thirds throughout the song. He alternates the two sometimes one after the other, maintaining doubt about the tone of the song, most certainly an indication of playing of Jean-Claude Vannier. This is made possible by the very light initial formula (guitar/bass/drums) and the fact that the guitar does not clearly play the chords.
Nevertheless, during the bridge (part "I" at 5:40 ) he plays in a very distinct way the notes of the other chords.
Like the other songs he uses a lot of chromatisms to create tensions and navigate through the chords as he used to do as a jazz double-bass player.
Very surprisingly this one was quite easy to learn but very tough to play properly. It's all about details and subtlety, here, and playing all these bends accurately is a real challenge. I don’t remember getting such calluses, even on a double bass. I can’t imagine playing it with roundwounds strings, it would be a nightmare.
This part was improvised in 1970 and I have no other example of a bass player doing stuff like that.
Once again, the strings are not muted during the song apart in the "I" part at 5:40
As for the other tracks of the B-side I had to tune my bass lower.

Herbie Flowers n'a jamais joué sur un disque de Gainsbourg et il est impossible d'obtenir ce son avec une jazz bass.
En 2011, pendant la préparation du coffret pour les quarante ans de l'album, des clichés inédits ont été retrouvés chez Tony Frank, l'auteur de la pochette. Ils prouvent de manière irréfutable la présence de Dave Richmond et Alan Parker à la guitare.

@@MuckLuto Même avec des filets ronds en fait, si tu palm mutes : j'ai un résultat très approchant sur la mienne.
@@sigismund02 Mais justement, la basse n'est pratiquement pas jouée en palm-mute sur tout l'album. C'est l'erreur que tout le monde fait (y compris moi-même pendant longtemps) en voulant retrouver ce son. Les tapewounds sont vraiment dans une catégorie à part.
