Thank you! Excellent diagnose and description. I cannot get an MPI Mini to start after I repaired the suspension and subframes. Equipped with the wiring diagrams and your video I will head back to the garage now and give it another try ;)
Solid fault finding...I take your point about the ECU but still prefer the old simple electrics on early mini...think is probably an age thing ! lol...smashing channel .
Sir, can you please please help me. I imported a brand new ECU from somerford. MNE101351. My original ECU in my Japan SPI 1997 car is MNE101350. However, the car starts for half a second and dies. It wont start again. It cranks but wont start. Is there an Immorbilizer issue with the new ECU and in my car? I dont have an Immorbilizer in my car, but the ECU I bought from UK might have that right?
Hello. The immobiliser is a seperate unit (Lucas 5AS) which normally lives behind the dashboard. On my Mini, if the immobiliser is not turned off then the engine will not crank - the ECU sends the signal to the starter motor relay after it has had confirmation from the immobiliser. I would start by checking the basics. Make sure that you have fuel getting to the injectors (like I did in the video) and check that you have spark. Also check that the engine has good compression. You can spray some brake cleaner into the air intake and see if it runs off the vapour - if it does then it is a fuel issue. Also check the wires into the ECU, make sure that the wires are not damaged and that all of the contacts in the wiring plug are clean and free from corosion. If that does not work then you will need to start doing diagnostic checks with PScan (pscan.co.uk). There is a video of this on my channel. Good luck :-)
I have a Mini 1995 Sidewalk edition with an alarm problem. Any way to disable the system? It won't shut off when using the fob. Pressing the buttons many times will sometimes shut the system off so I can drive the car. Take the key out or shut the car off and the problem starts all over again, horn honking and no crank. I just purchased the car.
It sounds like your fob maybe defective. Check out this forum post which may help: www.theminiforum.co.uk/forums/topic/269150-alarmimmobiliser-wont-deactivate-help-please/page-2

Thank you for subscribing 🙂. Good luck getting it fixed, the wiring can be frustrating but follow it through methodically and hopefully you will win
Great work Gareth, gonna make using the car much more enjoyable knowing it will now always start!
Thanks James! Yeah, it was getting a bit unreliable. It did the same thing last year on the Most ramp which was sub-optimal!
