Shipping is same issue in Hawaii, except you don't have the option of shipping by ground. You'll get all the way to the end of the order and "sorry we don't ship to HI or AK" Had to buy a plastic cover for my engine fan once, no one in Hawaii had it; found it on the mainland - the cover cost $20, the shipping to Hawaii cost $45...
I hate it when the products says “OUT OF STOCK”, but if you change your address to a mainland address the product is magically available!! We have had to ship stuff to relatives or friends and then have them ship them to us!!
Sorry, you CHOOSE to live there on the far end of the continent (Alaska) or an island chain in the middle of the Pacific Ocean (Hawaii). Move to the Mainland if the shipping situation is an issue for you.
My niece moved to Barrow Alaska 15 years ago and has no regrets. I went to visit her,and it isn't for me because even summer is winter. But ,hey,she lives winter,and that's why she moved there. I asked her if she felt trapped there and if she wanted to move to NY. Her reaction was,"Hell No, I love it here, the people are kind, it's private,I have a great job,and the cold weather is amazing." She only complained really about how costly grocery shopping can get. She literally spent almost $800.00 on 1 week of food just for her,her boyfeiend,and me during my visit. That was only 6 bags of food. When in NY I can buy the ame things she did for $250.00 . I did notice that my ears popped alot there because the pressure is different,but chewing gum helped with that. There are almost NO police around,and the ones that are ,are very nice. It really isn't for everyone,but there are alot of people love it there,my niece included.

I vacationed there for a week one summer. I just loved it. The people are so colourful-everyone has a story, usually involving having lived in a van while running from an ex-wife, a family member done wrong, or the law. And yet-they are warm, interesting, and contrary to what you’d think, very welcoming to the uninitiated big city guy who asks stupid questions. I just loved the place.
The key is you spent a summer here. The rest of the year is winter. Most normal alaskans are here for six months and one day out of the year, otherwise they're not here October-March You did it the right way-come visit but don't move here unless you have a job
But they're probably the CULEX variety (?) that we all know well; bite at dawn and dusk. In Southern California, we now have an invasive species from S.E. Asia casually called "ankle biters" and "Asian tigers." They're smaller than culex; aka AEDES and they bite all day long; but are knocked out at the first cold spell in November... which means 40F or about 6C. The freeze in Alaska makes it unlikely aedes will infest that state.
Off topic a bit but Toni A. in the Houston area might understand: You haven't lived until your house has been overrun by cockroaches the size of mice and your patio overrun by canal rats the size of cats in southern Florida.
Two sayings I remember hearing about Alaska from a family friend who was from Anchorage... The State Bird of Alaska is the mosquito! There are only two seasons in Alaska: Winter and August 23!
And, they got medicine that uses the Jellyfish, to boost brain functions. I bet to differ, as I feel, there is nothing about this critter that is useful, in any way!
I'm actually planning on moving to AK from FL in a couple of years... Thank you for this video! I plan on living off-grid, while having a greenhouse to grow crops in the summer months, and hunting throughout the winter months. I had no idea about the gas prices, so that's definitely something to prepare for! :]

Tbf thats the price for people way out in the boonies. Most people either live in Anchorage or in fairbanks. Where fruit is way more reasonable. If your paying 40 dollars for watermelon you're living off the land

I've lived in interior Alaska for 30 years....love it! Except 1) mosquitoes, 2) short days of December, 3) occasional smoke from wildfires during some summers, 4) occasional ice fog events during some winters, 5) long plane flight to visit family on East Coast...typically a full day on planes/airports....leave at 1am get there at 5pm.
In NY last week I paid $38 a pound for King salmon and $52 a pound for Alaskan King crab. The king is worth every penny though. Once you eat it farmed salmon will never do.
I would say as someone that moved there as a kid but wasn’t born there , Alaskans are some of the most provential and territorial citizens in the United States . I was often made to feel like I didn’t belong because I wasn’t a “real Alaskan” . Ironically I lived there longer than anywhere else and since moving away all anybody ever asks me about was what growing up in Alaska was like .
I did 4 winters in Minot, ND when I was in the USAF and my daughter was born there. The climate in Minot is very similar to some of the interior parts of Alaska - subzero temperatures for months at a time! Both of my children have lived in/around Anchorage for the last 22 years. I've never been there, and have NO desire to ever go. I'm perfectly happy in Mobile, Alabama!
Lol! Yep. I just moved from Florida 5 months ago. I have had a few customer service rep people think AK stood for Arkansas. And, because everyone I know is from the Eastern time zone, it took a few months for friends, family, doctors, etc. to quit calling me early in the morning.
I live in Alaska and how would describe the snow is, when in lower 48 you get an inch and everything shuts down here you will have 3 feet of snow and an inch of ice and you will still go to school. The only time you get a snow day is when the majority of cars are off the road
I grew up with 4ft snow and 3ft frozen solid down under the snow and we walked to school in shoes and skirts for school uniform! Back in the 1960s. I come to CA and it just has a shower of rain and they go nuts driving faster to get out of it like the car will dissolve! I bought snow jacket, gloves, hat and pants before I came, was told it snows? Bought snowboots first winter? Donated it all to charity after we went to the snow up in Tahoe!
My 1st duty station while in the U.S.Army, was Ft. Wainwright, just outside Fairbanks Ak. One issue not mentioned, unless you covered this in your other videos, is that the mosquito issue. During the short spring, summer, and fall, given the chance, mosquitoes, will try to turn you into a pin cushion. Upon arriving at my unit, posted on the bulletin board was an article on the death of a civilian pilot who had crashed in the tundra and tried to walk to safety. He was found dead after sucomming to the extensive attacks by mosquitoes...
Plus needing a Heater for your Car engine, or Outlets freezing out of the Wall. or electricity just not working mid winter because the Fiber lines snap....
My Dad was in the Air Force. He was stationed in Hawaii from 1957 to 1960..then the last base was Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage, from 1972-2019 when he passed away and is buried on Fort Richardson
I live outside Fairbanks and wouldn't trade it for anyplace else. Minus the extreme cold snaps coupled with the occasional dark winter depression, which only weeds out the weak from the strong, the Intetior is the only place where an American can call truly free. If your an individualist and resourseful, love firearms and the outdoors you'll love Alaska. But if your that person from the lower 48 pushing whats "best" for us Good Luck. We just like to do our own thing and be left alone.
*EDIT... Ignore all this if you got a bunny boot hook up and a trailer... We need a new bowling alley parking lot bunny boot guy. He died a few years ago and now we don't know where to get bunny boots. They last literally forever so the ones who have them already are all good but we have kids growing into bunny boot feet everyday and we don't know how to get them from anywhere other than northbowl's parking lot or from anyone else... Born here 29 years ago and have never lived anywhere else and don't ever plan to. I'll tell you what you need to know about/before moving here... If you don't have a job lined up don't... period. You won't find one and if you do it'll be at Walmart or McDonald's. Which goes into the second important thing to know if that job doesn't pay $75,000+ a year don't move up here. You won't be able to live independently/comfortably without state help/roommates/family help. Which leads into the third thing... As I'm sure everyone has heard yes we are very friendly and helpful and willing to give a stranger whatever they need to get by and that's because for the most part we are all struggling and we are all helping each other out. I have never seen someone who doesn't already have a good paying job move up here and be successful. If they have family on the outside that can pay for them to leave they are gone within a year. If they don't they get sucked into the never ending paycheck to paycheck debt hole hopefully in some slum lord apartment building and not out on the street or someone's couch. As they mentioned we have a big drug, alcohol and crime problem. That is directly because of the economic and mental/emotional problems living here causes... The problem is a lot worse than what's on paper and that's because there are a lot of "functional users" here and a lot of police/official's/neighbor's who are willing to look the other way as long as you aren't rummaging around other people's sheds for things to sell. Again as they mentioned we passed a law called SB-91 that released all nonviolent drug/theft offenders and even though a lot of people here think it turned out bad in reality it didn't. Crime has risen sense then and people are attributing the increase to people "doing more things because they know they won't go to jail."... that isn't the case. We have had a huge population increase and are finally going through the recession y'all did a while back (everyome jokes that everything is 10 years behind here and it really is 😅) and we've had a slew of corruption and bad deals made with oil companies by corrupt politicians and so in reality we just have more people now going through much harder times than we used to. You still get arrested, you still get charged, you still get punished and you can still go to jail... you just won't be held on bail until sentencing. Which is part of the reason the law was proposed in the first place. All our prisons/jails were at complete capacity with nonviolent offenders waiting for their day in court because nobody can afford bail themselves and nobody has family that can afford it either. Alaska will forever be my home and I can't imagine ever leaving even though it's really hard... My husband and I make a total of $64,000 a year. We have 2 kids and we live paycheck to paycheck and we owe the electric company over $200 at all times and the bank locks our account because we can't pay the credit card bill and we owe the gas company over $800 even though we haven't lived in a place where we paid for gas in over 6 years and we owe the cable company over $300 even though we haven't had cable in over 3 years and I ask my dad or my sister for food money at the end of the month and we get an eviction notice literally every month because the landlord doesn't take partial payments so we have to wait for the second paycheck of the month to pay or we literally can't eat. Most of us live like this... it's not just out in the village it's here in Wasilla and Anchorage as well. DO NOT MOVE UP HERE UNLESS YOU CAN AFFORD IT! YOU WILL GET STUCK AND YOU WILL REGRET IT.
I hate when non-lifelong Alaskans unlike myself keep complaining and insinuating how expensive food and stuff is here. It discourages people that don't live here from coming up here altogether. they are just basing the prices at where they live. it's not like the prices that they list everywhere. it's only prices like that in the most secluded and isolated areas of Alaska. I've lived in Valdez, Eagle River, Wasilla, Seward, and anchorage. and here in anchorage. that half of a watermelon would only be around 3-7 bucks at the most.

Love the drive from Kenai to Seward after tourists season when everything goes on sale. Seward is so charming. Growing your own veggies is the way to go. I have actually seen some of the biggest vegetables I have ever seen in my life. Coming from California it is drastic to say the least but worth it!
Can I ask how do you manage growing the veggies and such with the cold weather ? Sorry I live in the caribbean in the urban area . I don't really like it here . Alaska seems like such a wonderful place. However I'm a single mother so i can't just pack up and go... I do like to watch videos and get informed
@@s.vazquez summers are warm and since there is like 14-20 hours of daylight (depending where in AK you are.) they can grow pretty big. You can jar or freeze them so they can last during winter. If you ever get a chance to visit you will fall in love and not want to leave.
It cost me very little to live in Alaska. The groceries are not that badly priced in the cities. I drive to Wasilla to buy groceries once every 6 weeks. All of my meat comes from the land. No taxes. No building codes. I own my home and land. Few can say that in todays world. You do not own your property if you have to pay taxes on it.

Grew up in Seward after moving from KS in 04. Alaska has its challenges, but I guess it's the price we pay for its beautiful land and sea. Love the content, Happy Thanksgiving!
I lived in Fairbanks for a couple of years and know what it is like to feel cold at 40-60 below zero!... but, I do have to say that many of the people there are very kind and caring! Personally, I love Alaska, just don't like the mosquitoes!... other than that, I love the wild life!

Loved my time in Alaska (as a tourist). Don't know about the early phone calls, but I could imagine that being a pain. For me driving on the icy roads was the worst. You can clearly see that cars are sliding all over the place, but people, especially the trucks are all moving at darn near 100 mph! OMG! They also get very irate when they see you driving at 35mph (to avoid certain death). That for me was the worst. I'm sure that with time, I'd be ice road trekking it like the rest of them, but yikes!
Sad thing is, in the 70s if you broke down on road every driver would stop and help. If you break down today you best get car off the road cause most drivers will run you over. The roads are full of stunt drivers and ditch divers when iced up but if it's rains, there doing 40. If you dont have a plane fishing and hunting are becoming tough. A boat helps but expect lots of competition. Alaska is only a shadow of the paradise it once was. Since the antiquities act and the alaska land act when Jimmy Carter stole 56 million acres all in the name of conservation saying alaska belongs to all Americans. If you put the government in control of the Sahara there would be a shortage of sand in 5 years! Spent 23 wonderful years there but won't consider going back.

And it only gets worse as you age... Seniors and cold climate are a bad combination. Arthritis, etc. And... the ability to drive a car, for very old people, becomes impractical.

Thank you for this video. You just saved me well over 10k in moving expenses as I was planning on moving to Anchorage for work this June 1st. I must say though, I'm very disappointed as I had my heart set on making a life up there. If it's so much more expensive and the same crime rate, I'd be nuts to move from SW Floriduh.
Addendum to my previous post. I am moving to Anchorage in 9 days from now on 5/31/2021. I found a nice 1BR 1BA for $1250 fully furnished. The company that hired me paid me 10k for the move and paid my rent for the first 3 months. I'm starting @ $35 an hour so that's not too bad for starters. We shall see. I'll be driving my F150 towing a 5x8 UHaul 4,983 miles up through the AlCan. I can't wait. I hope the Kings are running when I get there. A huge plus is Lake Hood seaplane base, I'll be spending time watching the planes on my off days. I can't wait! Seriously, Floriduh is a SHITHOLE if you're not a Q-Tip waiting to die.

My freezer is full of red salmon that I snagged in Seward the second time ever trying. Work is good. Can't wait for winter, these long summer days are great but it's always light outside right now. Even though the sun has fallen it doesn't get fully dark. That's odd to me. Plus, my body clock STILL has not adjusted to the four hour time difference from Florida to Anchorage. Everyone has been really nice and the scenery is stunning. Especially the drive from Anchorage to Seward. It's so nice, I don't even care if I catch fish. I'm gonna give it a year for sure.
I live in Northern Finland. It can get many times -20˚C in the winter and maybe even -30˚C (-4˚F and -22˚F). And we can have usually about 1 meter of snow. (3,28 feet). It’s also very dark. There’s probably a few hours of sunlight and in some parts at some times none.

I live in PR and we have the same issue with purchasing online. Many sellers wont ship to PR, shipping cost at times is ridiculous, and you never get your Hope's up until it accepts your address with many online stores.

Though by Alaskan standards my definition of ‘freezing’ is a joke. I remember growing up in Fairbanks in the 1970s and 1980s, walking to school sometimes it seemed visibility was only a few feet. My mother always graciously called it the “ice fog”, but I learned later it was actually smog.
This brings back such good memories! I had occasion to spend the darkest part of a winter in Watson Lake, Yukon Territory and the warmth of the people there made up for the cold outside.
@@outliersoverland I didn't remember the name, but friends in Watson Lake did take me to some hot springs and it was a kick jumping into hot water when it was -60.
I can't wait to get out everything is so expensive here and I hate the cold. Used to go to Seward and homer every summer, kasilof for dipnetting, and I just can't wait to move to Florida. The summers are great just hate the winter.
Prettiest state I ever saw from the rear view mirrors as was was leaving the last time. Lived there 26 years. The older I got the colder I got. Went there in 2019, stayed for three years that summer ( June, July, and August.) on the kenai. Got to see a bunch of the peninsula burn during the swan lake fire. Plenty of burglaries, home invasions to keep the Facebook posts fresh. Like my mother in law once said “it’s a green hell”. Oh and the roads from the border to Anchorage are terrible.

moving from MA to AK in early August! job offer was too good to pass up , and MA cost of living is becoming way out of hand , I grew up in the sticks of MA and I'm prepared to be blown away in AK ! im a single woman moving up there and I've heard its not that safe for ladies up there, can you give me some piece of mind for that topic ! I'll be living in anchorage and the catch and release system really freaked me out when you guys mentioned that! im not too sure if my apartment is going to be in a good area or not , the rent is cheap though so idk if that's a sign to go to a nicer neighborhood for a little extra in rent each month . im also a little freaked out about the gun thing , in MA we have one of the strictest laws in regards to guns so knowing that I can buy a gun in AK and its not a big deal is comforting and i will deff be buying one ! also can you guys mention things about moving to Alaska from another state in your next video like the costs of moving there , ill be selling my sedan before I leave and will be buying a 4x4 immediately when I get there. also what is the costs of doing things like going out for a beer or going out to eat ? can you guys also do a grocery shopping trip so I can see the full extent of how much I'd be spending on groceries every week, my plan when moving up there will be no take out and meal prepping for the week so I guess my question would be how much are things like a can of soup and milk . are there a lot of farmers markets ? my safety is my #1 priority though and I just wanna make sure ill be okay before going up there, I feel like I can take care of myself and I've been taking self defense classes .

Seen a bunch of the things you talked about lol and a lot of business people can't figure out somethings. When I started coming here to Oklahoma back in 2000 the average gas prices in Juneau were a dollar to a 1.50 higher in Juneau than here in Oklahoma. They use to not have a oil refinery in Alaska and I don't know if they have one now. Being on disability even know Alaska gives a bit more it costs more up there like you were showing and really higher out in Nome and other places like point Barrow. Around here like in Juneau a lot of people wouldn't know what to do if they came outside and there's a bear outside.
You forgot to list tourist season, anyone that does not work in the tourist industry, are not fans of all the tourists but deal with it because it is a big part of the state economy.
Well, I'll tell you what folks: I live in Northern Maine,, and we don't have a climate too far extreme from what you have, unless you want to get into arctic conditions. We're classified as sub-arctic, and winter temps can sink to -50 below or lower, so it ain't no walk in the park. Just so you know.

We purchased a plot of .99 of an acre that had a 2 bed/2 bath main with a 1 bed/1bath understorie apartment and a 1bed/1bath cottage for under $350,00.00 in 2017. The property also has a view of the Caribbean Sea and a historic landing site for Columbus and pirates.

Buying an avocado is like gambling. You pay five bucks and wonder if it's going to be like eating a rock, or it's going to be all black inside. Alaskans get the best deal from Amazon prime, baby carriages, tires, toilet paper, and the fact that local stores had to reduce prices to compete with Amazon. Drug and suicide are constant tragedies. Climate Change is a so called problem in Alaska, like, sure miss those seventy below winters, longer growing season by a week, more rain in the interior and where I live, which used to filled with smoke all summer, forestry can't keep enough people even for small fires because there aren't enough. Really hate when it freezes in July when everything is garden is just taking off. When I go south I never mention being from Alaska. It's get old answering the same stupid questions. I love your channel! My wife n I just came back. Did Fairbanks to seward(by train of course) and I’m not by the bug. I hate Philadelphia (where we live) and we are in love with Alaska life. Going back in mid February to feel out a month in winter. Our goal is 3-5yrs to be moved and living in AK.
LOL when we moved to Utah in 2007 from Arkansas, our son was an outstanding baseball pitcher and because he had the southern accent, his nickname became Arkansas. That's what everyone knew him as HOWEVER, when the parents would be cheering for him, most of them would shout "Come on Arkansas! Let's go AK!. It was mind blowing to me that people didn't know AK was ALASKA!

Shipping is same issue in Hawaii, except you don't have the option of shipping by ground. You'll get all the way to the end of the order and "sorry we don't ship to HI or AK" Had to buy a plastic cover for my engine fan once, no one in Hawaii had it; found it on the mainland - the cover cost $20, the shipping to Hawaii cost $45...
I hate it when the products says “OUT OF STOCK”, but if you change your address to a mainland address the product is magically available!! We have had to ship stuff to relatives or friends and then have them ship them to us!!

My niece moved to Barrow Alaska 15 years ago and has no regrets. I went to visit her,and it isn't for me because even summer is winter. But ,hey,she lives winter,and that's why she moved there. I asked her if she felt trapped there and if she wanted to move to NY. Her reaction was,"Hell No, I love it here, the people are kind, it's private,I have a great job,and the cold weather is amazing." She only complained really about how costly grocery shopping can get. She literally spent almost $800.00 on 1 week of food just for her,her boyfeiend,and me during my visit. That was only 6 bags of food. When in NY I can buy the ame things she did for $250.00 .
I did notice that my ears popped alot there because the pressure is different,but chewing gum helped with that.
There are almost NO police around,and the ones that are ,are very nice.
It really isn't for everyone,but there are alot of people love it there,my niece included.

I vacationed there for a week one summer. I just loved it. The people are so colourful-everyone has a story, usually involving having lived in a van while running from an ex-wife, a family member done wrong, or the law. And yet-they are warm, interesting, and contrary to what you’d think, very welcoming to the uninitiated big city guy who asks stupid questions. I just loved the place.
The key is you spent a summer here. The rest of the year is winter. Most normal alaskans are here for six months and one day out of the year, otherwise they're not here October-March

You’re right, they can be bad.
But they're probably the CULEX variety (?) that we all know well; bite at dawn and dusk. In Southern California, we now have an invasive species from S.E. Asia casually called "ankle biters" and "Asian tigers." They're smaller than culex; aka AEDES and they bite all day long; but are knocked out at the first cold spell in November... which means 40F or about 6C. The freeze in Alaska makes it unlikely aedes will infest that state.

I'm actually planning on moving to AK from FL in a couple of years... Thank you for this video! I plan on living off-grid, while having a greenhouse to grow crops in the summer months, and hunting throughout the winter months. I had no idea about the gas prices, so that's definitely something to prepare for! :]

I've lived in interior Alaska for 30 years....love it! Except 1) mosquitoes, 2) short days of December, 3) occasional smoke from wildfires during some summers, 4) occasional ice fog events during some winters, 5) long plane flight to visit family on East Coast...typically a full day on planes/airports....leave at 1am get there at 5pm.

In NY last week I paid $38 a pound for King salmon and $52 a pound for Alaskan King crab. The king is worth every penny though. Once you eat it farmed salmon will never do.

I would say as someone that moved there as a kid but wasn’t born there , Alaskans are some of the most provential and territorial citizens in the United States . I was often made to feel like I didn’t belong because I wasn’t a “real Alaskan” . Ironically I lived there longer than anywhere else and since moving away all anybody ever asks me about was what growing up in Alaska was like .
I did 4 winters in Minot, ND when I was in the USAF and my daughter was born there. The climate in Minot is very similar to some of the interior parts of Alaska - subzero temperatures for months at a time! Both of my children have lived in/around Anchorage for the last 22 years. I've never been there, and have NO desire to ever go. I'm perfectly happy in Mobile, Alabama!
Lol! Yep. I just moved from Florida 5 months ago. I have had a few customer service rep people think AK stood for Arkansas. And, because everyone I know is from the Eastern time zone, it took a few months for friends, family, doctors, etc. to quit calling me early in the morning.

I live in Alaska and how would describe the snow is, when in lower 48 you get an inch and everything shuts down here you will have 3 feet of snow and an inch of ice and you will still go to school. The only time you get a snow day is when the majority of cars are off the road
I grew up with 4ft snow and 3ft frozen solid down under the snow and we walked to school in shoes and skirts for school uniform! Back in the 1960s. I come to CA and it just has a shower of rain and they go nuts driving faster to get out of it like the car will dissolve! I bought snow jacket, gloves, hat and pants before I came, was told it snows? Bought snowboots first winter? Donated it all to charity after we went to the snow up in Tahoe!

My 1st duty station while in the U.S.Army, was Ft. Wainwright, just outside Fairbanks Ak. One issue not mentioned, unless you covered this in your other videos, is that the mosquito issue. During the short spring, summer, and fall, given the chance, mosquitoes, will try to turn you into a pin cushion. Upon arriving at my unit, posted on the bulletin board was an article on the death of a civilian pilot who had crashed in the tundra and tried to walk to safety. He was found dead after sucomming to the extensive attacks by mosquitoes...
Plus needing a Heater for your Car engine, or Outlets freezing out of the Wall. or electricity just not working mid winter because the Fiber lines snap....

My Dad was in the Air Force. He was stationed in Hawaii from 1957 to 1960..then the last base was Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage, from 1972-2019 when he passed away and is buried on Fort Richardson

Minus the extreme cold snaps coupled with the occasional dark winter depression, which only weeds out the weak from the strong, the Intetior is the only place where an American can call truly free. If your an individualist and resourseful, love firearms and the outdoors you'll love Alaska. But if your that person from the lower 48 pushing whats "best" for us Good Luck. Born here 29 years ago and have never lived anywhere else and don't ever plan to. I'll tell you what you need to know about/before moving here... If you don't have a job lined up don't... period. You won't find one and if you do it'll be at Walmart or McDonald's. Which goes into the second important thing to know if that job doesn't pay $75,000+ a year don't move up here. You won't be able to live independently/comfortably without state help/roommates/family help. Which leads into the third thing... As I'm sure everyone has heard yes we are very friendly and helpful and willing to give a stranger whatever they need to get by and that's because for the most part we are all struggling and we are all helping each other out. I have never seen someone who doesn't already have a good paying job move up here and be successful. If they have family on the outside that can pay for them to leave they are gone within a year. If they don't they get sucked into the never ending paycheck to paycheck debt hole hopefully in some slum lord apartment building and not out on the street or someone's couch. As they mentioned we have a big drug, alcohol and crime problem. That is directly because of the economic and mental/emotional problems living here causes... The problem is a lot worse than what's on paper and that's because there are a lot of "functional users" here and a lot of police/official's/neighbor's who are willing to look the other way as long as you aren't rummaging around other people's sheds for things to sell. Again as they mentioned we passed a law called SB-91 that released all nonviolent drug/theft offenders and even though a lot of people here think it turned out bad in reality it didn't. Crime has risen sense then and people are attributing the increase to people "doing more things because they know they won't go to jail."... that isn't the case. We have had a huge population increase and are finally going through the recession y'all did a while back (everyome jokes that everything is 10 years behind here and it really is 😅) and we've had a slew of corruption and bad deals made with oil companies by corrupt politicians and so in reality we just have more people now going through much harder times than we used to. You still get arrested, you still get charged, you still get punished and you can still go to jail... you just won't be held on bail until sentencing. Which is part of the reason the law was proposed in the first place. All our prisons/jails were at complete capacity with nonviolent offenders waiting for their day in court because nobody can afford bail themselves and nobody has family that can afford it either.
Alaska will forever be my home and I can't imagine ever leaving even though it's really hard... My husband and I make a total of $64,000 a year. We have 2 kids and we live paycheck to paycheck and we owe the electric company over $200 at all times and the bank locks our account because we can't pay the credit card bill and we owe the gas company over $800 even though we haven't lived in a place where we paid for gas in over 6 years and we owe the cable company over $300 even though we haven't had cable in over 3 years and I ask my dad or my sister for food money at the end of the month and we get an eviction notice literally every month because the landlord doesn't take partial payments so we have to wait for the second paycheck of the month to pay or we literally can't eat. Most of us live like this... it's not just out in the village it's here in Wasilla and Anchorage as well.
DO NOT MOVE UP HERE UNLESS YOU CAN AFFORD IT! YOU WILL GET STUCK AND YOU WILL REGRET IT.

I hate when non-lifelong Alaskans unlike myself keep complaining and insinuating how expensive food and stuff is here. It discourages people that don't live here from coming up here altogether. they are just basing the prices at where they live. it's not like the prices that they list everywhere. it's only prices like that in the most secluded and isolated areas of Alaska. I've lived in Valdez, Eagle River, Wasilla, Seward, and anchorage. and here in anchorage. that half of a watermelon would only be around 3-7 bucks at the most.
I'm not from here but I agree, these people need to learn to hunt and fish, but I will say I'm lucky to be south east and not mid to north west

I lived in Alaska on a LDS mission...I served in Soldotna, Fairbanks, Anchorage and when I was in college I tried to get a job on a boat in Valdez! Beautiful and people will help you if you’re in trouble!

Love the drive from Kenai to Seward after tourists season when everything goes on sale. Seward is so charming. Growing your own veggies is the way to go. I have actually seen some of the biggest vegetables I have ever seen in my life. Coming from California it is drastic to say the least but worth it!
Can I ask how do you manage growing the veggies and such with the cold weather ? Sorry I live in the caribbean in the urban area . I don't really like it here . Alaska seems like such a wonderful place. However I'm a single mother so i can't just pack up and go... I do like to watch videos and get informed
@@s.vazquez summers are warm and since there is like 14-20 hours of daylight (depending where in AK you are.) they can grow pretty big. You can jar or freeze them so they can last during winter. If you ever get a chance to visit you will fall in love and not want to leave.
Used to work in a call center and the first Alaskan I talked to I made the mistake of saying they were in Arkansas...won't make that mistake again.
It cost me very little to live in Alaska. The groceries are not that badly priced in the cities. I drive to Wasilla to buy groceries once every 6 weeks. All of my meat comes from the land. No taxes. No building codes. I own my home and land. Few can say that in todays world. You do not own your property if you have to pay taxes on it.

I lived in Fairbanks for a couple of years and know what it is like to feel cold at 40-60 below zero!... but, I do have to say that many of the people there are very kind and caring! Personally, I love Alaska, just don't like the mosquitoes!... other than that, I love the wild life!

I think the biggest issue I’ve heard in here is the cost of produce. I think I would 100% grow my own fruits in a greenhouse
Loved my time in Alaska (as a tourist). Don't know about the early phone calls, but I could imagine that being a pain. For me driving on the icy roads was the worst. You can clearly see that cars are sliding all over the place, but people, especially the trucks are all moving at darn near 100 mph! OMG! They also get very irate when they see you driving at 35mph (to avoid certain death). That for me was the worst. I'm sure that with time, I'd be ice road trekking it like the rest of them, but yikes!

Sad thing is, in the 70s if you broke down on road every driver would stop and help. If you break down today you best get car off the road cause most drivers will run you over. The roads are full of stunt drivers and ditch divers when iced up but if it's rains, there doing 40. If you dont have a plane fishing and hunting are becoming tough. A boat helps but expect lots of competition. Alaska is only a shadow of the paradise it once was. Since the antiquities act and the alaska land act when Jimmy Carter stole 56 million acres all in the name of conservation saying alaska belongs to all Americans. If you put the government in control of the Sahara there would be a shortage of sand in 5 years! Spent 23 wonderful years there but won't consider going back.
Catch and release isn't unique to Alaska. Criminals are running free everywhere because courts won't hold them accountable. Nice videos!

And it only gets worse as you age... Seniors and cold climate are a bad combination. Arthritis, etc. And... the ability to drive a car, for very old people, becomes impractical.

Thank you for this video. You just saved me well over 10k in moving expenses as I was planning on moving to Anchorage for work this June 1st. I must say though, I'm very disappointed as I had my heart set on making a life up there. If it's so much more expensive and the same crime rate, I'd be nuts to move from SW Floriduh.
Addendum to my previous post. I am moving to Anchorage in 9 days from now on 5/31/2021. I found a nice 1BR 1BA for $1250 fully furnished. The company that hired me paid me 10k for the move and paid my rent for the first 3 months. I'm starting @ $35 an hour so that's not too bad for starters. We shall see. I'll be driving my F150 towing a 5x8 UHaul 4,983 miles up through the AlCan. I can't wait. I hope the Kings are running when I get there. A huge plus is Lake Hood seaplane base, I'll be spending time watching the planes on my off days. I can't wait! Seriously, Floriduh is a SHITHOLE if you're not a Q-Tip waiting to die.

My freezer is full of red salmon that I snagged in Seward the second time ever trying. Work is good. Can't wait for winter, these long summer days are great but it's always light outside right now. Even though the sun has fallen it doesn't get fully dark. That's odd to me. Plus, my body clock STILL has not adjusted to the four hour time difference from Florida to Anchorage. Everyone has been really nice and the scenery is stunning. Especially the drive from Anchorage to Seward. It's so nice, I don't even care if I catch fish. I'm gonna give it a year for sure.

I live in Northern Finland. It can get many times -20˚C in the winter and maybe even -30˚C (-4˚F and -22˚F). And we can have usually about 1 meter of snow. (3,28 feet). It’s also very dark. There’s probably a few hours of sunlight and in some parts at some times none.
You can relate well to Alaska!

I buy 5 loaves of bread at the the bread outlet store for 5 dollars, extra large jars of pb&j for less than 10.00, there goes my favorite snack food for a month. People just like to complain. They don't realize how well we have it here compared to other countries. That's why we have thousands of people literally dying to come here. Yet many of us who are born here want to move to AK.?

I live in PR and we have the same issue with purchasing online. Many sellers wont ship to PR, shipping cost at times is ridiculous, and you never get your Hope's up until it accepts your address with many online stores.

I am an oddball whose been itching to visit Alaska. I currently live in Nevada where its burning in the summer and freezing in the winter. Though by Alaskan standards my definition of ‘freezing’ is a joke.
I had plans to visit this year before covid lockdown and my travel savings ended up going towards basic survival 😩 2021 will be better hopefully .

How neat! Nice video. I want to go to Alaska more than just about anything. It is my top thing I have to do. I am having a hard time trying to decide where I would like to see though. Lol. I love winter and the cold. I am not a summer person at all. One of my happiest days will be the day I get to see your breathtaking state.

I remember growing up in Fairbanks in the 1970s and 1980s, walking to school sometimes it seemed visibility was only a few feet. My mother always graciously called it the “ice fog”, but I learned later it was actually smog.

This brings back such good memories! I had occasion to spend the darkest part of a winter in Watson Lake, Yukon Territory and the warmth of the people there made up for the cold outside.

I can't wait to get out everything is so expensive here and I hate the cold. Used to go to Seward and homer every summer, kasilof for dipnetting, and I just can't wait to move to Florida. The summers are great just hate the winter.
Prettiest state I ever saw from the rear view mirrors as was was leaving the last time. Lived there 26 years. The older I got the colder I got. Went there in 2019, stayed for three years that summer ( June, July, and August.) on the kenai. Got to see a bunch of the peninsula burn during the swan lake fire. Plenty of burglaries, home invasions to keep the Facebook posts fresh. Like my mother in law once said “it’s a green hell”. Oh and the roads from the border to Anchorage are terrible.
I was considering moving there but after seeing this video and reading your comment am having second thoughts. The home invasion thing sounds the worst especially since most live rural. Where did u end up that is better?

moving from MA to AK in early August! job offer was too good to pass up , and MA cost of living is becoming way out of hand , I grew up in the sticks of MA and I'm prepared to be blown away in AK ! im a single woman moving up there and I've heard its not that safe for ladies up there, can you give me some piece of mind for that topic ! I'll be living in anchorage and the catch and release system really freaked me out when you guys mentioned that! im not too sure if my apartment is going to be in a good area or not , the rent is cheap though so idk if that's a sign to go to a nicer neighborhood for a little extra in rent each month . im also a little freaked out about the gun thing , in MA we have one of the strictest laws in regards to guns so knowing that I can buy a gun in AK and its not a big deal is comforting and i will deff be buying one ! also can you guys mention things about moving to Alaska from another state in your next video like the costs of moving there , ill be selling my sedan before I leave and will be buying a 4x4 immediately when I get there. also what is the costs of doing things like going out for a beer or going out to eat ? can you guys also do a grocery shopping trip so I can see the full extent of how much I'd be spending on groceries every week, my plan when moving up there will be no take out and meal prepping for the week so I guess my question would be how much are things like a can of soup and milk .

It really depends on where your moving to, if you're gonna be living in anchorage it definitely isnt a bad idea to get your conceal carry permit

Planning on moving to Alaska from FL in a little less than 2 years. Have most of the things planned out already. From CO so cold, snow, and crazy drivers I'm used to and looking forward to having seasons again other than Rainy and hot af.
You need to keep your butt in Florida. Moving across state lines is not worth the trouble. You had better love sitting all day trying to get an Alaska driver's license, plates, registration, etc. At about hour 7 you will start wishing you had listened to me and stayed in Florida; and you will start wishing that you were not so retarded. You mark my words.
I went from Appleton Wisconsin to Alaska on my Harley, alone , a couple of years ago. Awesome trip. Seward Highway is a gotta see. Denali Park also.

Lol Seward,Alaska is my hometown I left at 29yrs old and now live in North Dakota.
Seen a bunch of the things you talked about lol and a lot of business people can't figure out somethings. When I started coming here to Oklahoma back in 2000 the average gas prices in Juneau were a dollar to a 1.50 higher in Juneau than here in Oklahoma. They use to not have a oil refinery in Alaska and I don't know if they have one now. Being on disability even know Alaska gives a bit more it costs more up there like you were showing and really higher out in Nome and other places like point Barrow. Around here like in Juneau a lot of people wouldn't know what to do if they came outside and there's a bear outside.

Well, I'll tell you what folks: I live in Northern Maine,, and we don't have a climate too far extreme from what you have, unless you want to get into arctic conditions. We're classified as sub-arctic, and winter temps can sink to -50 below or lower, so it ain't no walk in the park. Just so you know.

Buying an avocado is like gambling. You pay five bucks and wonder if it's going to be like eating a rock, or it's going to be all black inside. Alaskans get the best deal from Amazon prime, baby carriages, tires, toilet paper, and the fact that local stores had to reduce prices to compete with Amazon. Drug and suicide are constant tragedies. Climate Change is a so called problem in Alaska, like, sure miss those seventy below winters, longer growing season by a week, more rain in the interior and where I live, which used to filled with smoke all summer, forestry can't keep enough people even for small fires because there aren't enough. Really hate when it freezes in July when everything is garden is just taking off. When I go south I never mention being from Alaska. It's get old answering the same stupid questions. Even gets old exaggerating about things just to see if they believe it. And no, one person from Alaska doesn't know every other person from Alaska.

I love your channel! My wife n I just came back. Did Fairbanks to seward(by train of course) and I’m not by the bug. I hate Philadelphia (where we live) and we are in love with Alaska life. Going back in mid February to feel out a month in winter. Our goal is 3-5yrs to be moved and living in AK.

LOL when we moved to Utah in 2007 from Arkansas, our son was an outstanding baseball pitcher and because he had the southern accent, his nickname became Arkansas. That's what everyone knew him as HOWEVER, when the parents would be cheering for him, most of them would shout "Come on Arkansas! Let's go AK!. It was mind blowing to me that people didn't know AK was ALASKA!
