What a great look back at one of my favorite railroads! I first visited the Grande in the mid 70s when I visited a buddy who was working for the BN in Denver, then about the time of this video with a fellow D&H dispatcher, the next trip was with Marshall Beecher in the mid 90s. From the canyons to the mountain grades, it was a heck of a ride!
Thanks, Greg. Rio Grande’s EMD fleet really proved their worth on the railroad’s challenging territory. And they certainly sounded great while doing it!
Im blown away that you folks got all this filmed before the bean counters took it all away! C Vision is beautiful. Thanks. P.j.signs Carpinteria Calif.
Some fantastic footage as usual! I love watching those Rio Grande tunnel motors on the Tennessee Pass. Never gets old. I do hope they reopen this line, it’s too epic to be thrown away.
Growing up on the C&nw Rio grande was always a rare treat. I manage rail traffic for a large scrap shredding facility. I see 120 to 150 scrap gons a month. Abour 2 years ago I got areally clean gon with the mainline thru the rockies logos on both sides. Many pictures and selfies with it. ❤
That’s great! Those old cars are a real treat to see, especially when they’re in good condition. Thank you for sharing that story. It sounds like you have an interesting job!
We’re happy to hear that this video was enjoyable for you! The 80s and 90s were a fantastic time to document American railroading. Thank you for the comments.

Bob Rivard certainly enjoyed his travels from Minnesota to Colorado and Utah! He captured D&RGW trains on videotape, whereas Emery Gulash made 16mm films of this railroad which ran Through the Rockies---Not Around Them.
I grew up in Vail in the 70's-80's and went to Minturn Middle School. I think I knew the guy in the red Camaro getting arrested mid-way through the video!!!
Thank you for the kind words. We’re happy to hear that you’re enjoying the videos! And yes, lots of tunnels, hard pulls, and very little time for TLC with those units. But the Rio Grande and SP kept them running, despite the harsh operating conditions.
Having grown up in Colorado I spent many of summers chasing the Grand on both the Moffat and Tennessee pass lines, Railroading doesn't get any better then this! I scorn the UP for closing the Tennessee pass line down as it will never be active again, attempts have been made but the tree huggers block it, should have never been closed in the first place.
Todd: We’re thankful that you had a chance to experience the Rio Grande before it was too late. It’s a real shame how things ended for Tennessee Pass. Thank you for watching and commenting.
The Rio Grande had quite the extensive narrow-gauge system. We appreciate the fact that some of the trackage is still in operation under two very prominent tourist railroads. Thank you for watching, and for the comment.

@@CVisionProductions1 it sure is, and guess what? I am gonna be doing a model railway layout with that train I am gonna have 1 engine Denver & Rio Grande Western 3152 with 7 carriages and 1 caboose I am gonna have a 1 flatcar, 1 tank car, 5 boxcars and 1 caboose. It's gonna be orange, black and silver. The engine will be black and orange and the carriages will be orange, black and silver and the caboose will be orange. And I am gonna make a scenery, make the layout. I am gonna have Hills, Trees, a lake, railway crossings with LED lights, signal lights, a station, buildings and a gravel company and I am gonna weather the structures and that will make it look realistic and blend into the scenery and with the Bachmann Nickel Silver Ho scale Eze track I am gonna weather the track and ballast the track and this will add more realism to the layout and it will make it look realistic. And I am gonna have another train running around my layout on the same track as the Denver & Rio Grande Western and that will have 7 Cars and 1 caboose like the other one I was talking about and that one is gonna be Pennsylvania Railroad with Locomotive 2264 with 5 boxcars such as Santa Fe, Erie, Pennsylvania, and Northern Pacific, 2 tank cars such as Conoco and Amoco and a Northern Pacific Caboose. and I am gonna have some trains parked on the sidings at gravel unit and under the gravel company, I am gonna have 3 Reading Blue Mountain & Northern Coal cars parked under the gravel company, 3 cars next to the Gravel Company such as a Union Pacific boxcar, a Union Pacific tank car and a Santa Fe tank car, I am gonna have a Penn Central Locomotive 8146 with 2 Rock Island boxcars separate from the locomotive and I am gonna have 4 locomotives parked on the passing siding such as Denver & Rio Grande Western 5944 and 5941, Penn Central 3144 and Pennsylvania 7194
@CVisionProductions1 yeah, The Denver & Rio Grande Western is one of my favorite trains in the USA 🇺🇸. The D&RGW locomotive 3152 is one of my favorite locomotives in the USA
I wonder if they used 4 axle units to have more tractive effort on the rails? Or did they prefer them as an all around locomotive or just in certain divisions with higher elevations?
The Rio Grande would add an additional locomotive to Amtrak trains that required assistance over the mountains. From what we saw, passenger trains operating with three good order Amtrak units didn’t get help. Thanks for the comment.
My dad worked on the Rio Grande for 30 years. Lots of fond memories. Excellent presentation. Sure do miss seeing those black and orange diesels.
I bet he had great views every day! Thank you for the compliment!
This fantastic video should be digitally remastered! Thanks for presentation, from Germany

The D&RGW Railroad (Denver & Rio Grande Western) is my favourite

The SP and DRGW is my favourite fallen railroads! Excellent video, I will wait for the second part, if there is and it will be published.

Some fantastic footage as usual! I love watching those Rio Grande tunnel motors on the Tennessee Pass. Never gets old. I do hope they reopen this line, it’s too epic to be thrown away.
Thank you very much! We can only hope that there’s a light at the end of the tunnel for Tennessee Pass. It’s not looking too promising.
It’s dead….. UP said no go

D&RGW gone but not forgotten
Absolutely! We’re grateful to be able to share some of the Rio Grande’s history with these videos. Thank you for watching and commenting.
I bought my first VIDEO camera in 1988 so these guys were running around before I was. SO this is REALLY COOL footage to me personally!!!

Very little. Monikers and some drawings, but that was about it. Thank you for watching.
And railroads had cabooses then - these did things that EOT devices CANNOT do today.

Is tennessee Pass intact today or is it like the old Southern saluda grade
Tennessee Pass is indeed still intact. However, much work would need to be done before operations could resume.

Sure a lot of 2 axle truck engines
It was amazing what the Rio Grande accomplished with those GP40s and GP40-2s. They made it work!
I wonder if they used 4 axle units to have more tractive effort on the rails? Or did they prefer them as an all around locomotive or just in certain divisions with higher elevations?
Anybody know why the Zephyr’s needed a DRGW lead locomotive?
The Rio Grande would add an additional locomotive to Amtrak trains that required assistance over the mountains. From what we saw, passenger trains operating with three good order Amtrak units didn’t get help. Thanks for the comment.
Screw mergers.
We’ve lost many of our favorite railroads throughout the years. It seems that once you start getting attached to a certain railroad, it disappears.

Hello. The sound you heard was the ventilation system for the tunnel. It needed to be operated between the two trains. Thanks for watching.
