When I was in elementary school, I was amazed by D&D. But all my friends were intimidated by the giant books. So I made my own rpg called Dungeon Man. There was only three stats, strength, dexterity, and intelligence. Then you had your HP and your inventory, THATS IT. And I played that shit with all my friends on the playground! Every recess I had in 3rd grade was spent playing dungeon man. But it all ended when we got referrals for gambling, lol.
That's kinda surreal man. I teach 5th grade, and there's a girl doing basically the exact same thing with the Maze Rats rule-set I made. It's even a 3-stat system.
Lol I did the same thing but I made a vampire theme. I created character sheets using Microsoft Paint 🤣 my friends loved it and we played every day after school for a whole year and almost every day during that summer vacation.

The procedural nature of board games is what makes them fun. Most people really like the combat aspect of RPGs because they're typically the most structured (i.e. procedural) part of the game. Excellent video!

Players fill up to ten experience bubbles. They can cash in 8 to gain a level in a class, 5 to gain a feat, and 10 to gain a special reward (ex, one more hit die, a massive stat boost, or perhaps a class their stats dont permit for a certain class feature.) They lose bubbles if they hoard, cause of the ten bubble limit. I give out a 3-5 bubbles a session. I also consider the total bubbles they have acquired divided by 8 their true level. For example, I have a rogue who is level 3 but took a feat and has 3 bubbles so he is really a level 4.
Totally agree. One amazing thing you've taught me is don't sweat it. Toss a number out there, don't bother cutting perfect corners or laying perfect grids. The fun and uniqueness is in the imperfections. I take bits and ideas from all kinds if books from the standard 5e rulebooks to Dungeon World to Pathfinder to A Sundered World to Mud and Horn, Sword and Sparrow. The key is to just give a good session to the players.

I run a dungeon world campaign, where xp is given for failure on a dice roll, but my home brew is that they write down a quick snippet of how they failed so that when they level up, they’ll recite how they’ve failed and how that’s lead them to choose what they take as level rewards. I find it has the added benefit of helping them remember what’s happened story-wise (when the power of beers and honey whiskey takes hold, lol)

On skills: we just say, hey, if your character has this skill, this is what you do.
Otherwise, you have 5 people rolling arcana, and chances are... it's NOT the wizard who gets the arcana check!
(Btw, 3 player party had been most common)
We might have the half orc champion roll his intimidation (if it's a stretch) -- HE is our intimidation guy -- NOT the wizard.
It ties into the idea of being a mature, selfless player, and saves a TON of time. Everyone decides to give it a go, checks their stats, blah blah blah, 3 more minutes wasted as the dm REPEATEDLY says it doesn't work... until it does...

I've played about... maybe 20-30 sessions of 'consistent' dnd over the last couple of years. Last 4 months (new campaign) have been a once a month get together.

Hey, man - like it. At the end of my last game session, experience points went like this: "You are all 2nd level now!" done. My plan is roughly 1 level progression for level x session (Lvl1 to Lvl 2 = one session; Lvl2 to Lvl3 = two sessions, etc.). If players want X.P., I will just to a quick division and award the X.P.
I stopped caring about XP in around 2000. Never went back. I just award 1 level every three sessions. To keep it rewarding, I give a leveling up sooner when they succeed a worthwhile milestone (beat the boss, save the princess, save the town).

I scrolled down to the comments section to say this same thing... I don't even bother with EXP. Just level the party up via milestones. You defeat Mr BIg Bad? You level up. Finish a story plot arch... level up... Accomplish a personal character goal... level up...
I then use magic items to reward players. Its more fun... Side note... i don't understand this 5e attitude with giving out magic items... i give them out like candy, it has never been a problem, and players love it...
5e has the built in 3 magic item attunement, who cares if they have 10 magic items... make them fun an interesting, and the players will feel rewarded.
I love my group, they rarely need rest but make sure they aren’t going in naked... they do half my work for me

I like the voting for MVP mechanic ---I used to award bonus Action Points at the end of a session this way.
Another nice thing to do is scrap XP altogether, and try leveling by milestones. So every time a character does something important to the story (main story or their own personal story) they gain a level. I'm trying it out in a game and it's been pretty cool so far.
Rule 1: the DM is always right.
Rule 2: if the DM is wrong, see rule 1.

It's possible to run monsters using very simplified stats based entirely off of the CR value:
Saves & Skills = CR
AB = CR + 5
AC & Save DC = CR + 10
DMG = CR * 5
HP = CR * 20
Then, pick one of the creature's abilities to be its signature move and use it as described in the MM.
Edit: These numbers are based on the 3.5E/Pathfinder progression. I'll work on one for 5E and add it.

you have a lot of reflective surfaces in that room. the walls, the table. the shelves. the rugs will help... but not as much as getting some absorbtion and diffusion materials on the walls. just foam wont really do it by itself.
basically, the easy rule is this.
sound reflects the same as light does. if you see light reflecting off something, sound is bouncing off it as well.
Also, still using the snowball? sounds like your mic is attached to the camera, which, is generally terrible. :(

Another insightful video! I'm a few sessions into my first game as DM - 5e D&D. Magic is rare (because there are too many spells to think about), classes are homebrew (because the official ones feel too OP), and XP is like "everyone is now level 2.5!" (because small numbers are our friends).

Most of my homebrewing comes from the fact that I'm playing with my younger cousins who are all young enough that I wanted to figure out a way to make the game feel more epic to them without making it too challenging or complicated for them to manage. I still have most of the math deep down in there somewhere, but I told them that they really only need to worry about a few different numbers like their AC, HP, and primary Damage Modifier, and then I handle all of the tricky math for them just to save time.
From the get go, If you DM the red box or you are still trying to calculate THAC0, You Have substituted a rule for ( Whatever) and for the sake of gameplay you made a Ruling that was not "to the Book" but made the story better and the PC's a better team.
My personal favorite EXP system is from Fantasy Craft - using the NPC creation system, the DM adds traits that add to the experience total, and that's what the players get for overcoming it. +1 to an attribute? +1 EXP. Give it a feat? +2 EXP. Regeneration? 2 EXP per point and so on. Not sure how easy that system would be to port to 5e, since the system isn't built with that in mind. But it's cool!
Anything to make the game move along at an appropriate pace to the story is always a good call. The worst is when I would play with folks that had to look things up constantly because they didn't take time to learn anything about their character's abilities or stats, which made life way harder on our first time DM.
Since you brought up wonky XP numbers (ie, 38,350), for both RPGs I'm designing I'm just using blocks of like 50 or 100 (and monsters are worth very small amounts), with variant rules that are basically, "Level up whenever you finish adventures/sessions equal to your level".
I may have to do something like that. Allowing my players to vote for who was the most entertaining character of the night.

I homebrew nearly all my creatures. I give humanoids proficiencies in saving throws and extra skills based on their class or background. And have homebrewed a lot of my undead, given them back vulnerability to radiant damage, but gave them a few more condition immunities and resistances to cold and necrotic damage.
Opens with drunken "Boots -n-Pants" beat...Off to a good start.

That was nigh-a-half hr that flew by. Great stuff man.It's interesting that so many things that get done by GM's all over the world; on the fly, as ways to keep the game moving, have become kind of universally accepted and embraced house rules. Call it collective conscience, or just the fact that good ideas are good ideas...but it's true. They may go by different names in different systems, but we all just want the game to be rewarding for everyone involved.
I'm pretty good at coming up with systems for tabletop RPGs. I used to actually throw away more good ideas in a day than I wrote down. Not because I didn't think they would work, but because I have ADD and soon go do something else.
I need someone to either keep me on one idea or run with it when I lose interest.

Exp, easiest thing to do, if you dm for 20 years...flat exp. I have a pad I write exp in - I write down Any cool RP DONE, I give exp for treasure, I give exp for anything...basically I give exp for how I think the players boosted the game. I haven’t had a problem with it yet. Not once. As long as I give exp at the end and they say “oh cool”!! It’s easy.
DM's don't give out 1000 xp at lvl 1, because they are immediately lvl 3.

The first session of D&D for me was early 1990s, it was never anything but Theater of the Mind. D&D for me has always been this. Thankfully I never ran into this modern political nightmare I keep hearing about before 5e. That other video you made, for Dungeon Crawler Classics, just moves me to get back into it. If I have to use miniatures of grids, I would feel like i'm playing RP video games, which I love but I want more, I want imagination.

The problem I have is a group of 5 players and one is the rules lawyer who resists the homebrew while the rest love it. It may not be a good fit but the player likes the group and game. He just has a hard time going with the flow

I love homebrewing things, however a couple nights ago our DM let us go a little too wild. An example is that a barbarian, paladin and rogue combined into a 50ft giant with four arms. The bottom two arms had sonic boom knuckle dusters and the top two had long swords. Long story short our poor DM had a cool idea of a massive goblin army assaulting a village however in under 30 minutes we killed hundreds of goblins afterwards emerging and shouted "Ho there troglodyte" that circled the planet three times deafening a couple cities. It was hilarious and really fun but the fact that we killed goblins with grease, urine and making them so happy they exploded there was no control. Way over the top with barely any rules cos the idea was proposed a night before however we had such fun no of the players including me were bothered.
Homemade GM screens totally help with the stating and xp and stuff! And I have done 100,000+ xp games as both GM and as player. For example...Killing 4 massive ships of seasoned orcs which are about to loot, pillage, plunder, sack, rape, and kill the islands that was under my PCs protection, in about 2 days. According to my small faerie spies, they are being lead by Parrrr, ONE BAD ASS MO-FO . My men are just 1,500, not counting the faeries. However, I have the advantage...I have prior knowledge! (thanks to the faerie spy ring I had set up and extended to the tiny (20' across max) flying islands known as the Crumbling Islands.) And the ships, though tougher then most, DO SINK. So, I also have 25 pegasus knights and a "young juvenile" silver dragon at my call. (Bit of a backstory here...the dragon was very badly injured and I did my best to helped him to heal, guarded and hid him from the evil dragon hunting cult that killed its parent and was operating from one of the islands that is now under my PC's jurisdiction...but back then it wasn't. Technically, back then, nothing was under his jurisdiction other then himself. But then again back then even that was debatable...he served a noble family as a wizard on board ships ) Anyway...Yeah, you damn straight I took the battle to them. And made the sharks very happy and also very full. But I did it the smart way! And only loss 4 knights in the battle, look the leader prisoner...to find out who sent him, etc. Because there are plots within plots at work, and i knew it! After the interrogation was over, he escaped, and took off in a boat.
How's this for a simple XP rule? 1 XP per session. Now all I have to do is decide how many XP it takes to level. I use 2+Tier. So Tier 1 requires 3 xp. Tier 2 requires 4. Etc. with this system, weekly play takes you 2.25 years to make it to 20th level. Seems about right to me.
Each player gets 4+1D4 exp points per attended session. Every 20 points you level. Done and Done.
Pathfinder has so many broken classes like the summoner, and my players would always meta/power game so that's why I got into 5e

I’m gonna give them a magic totem...it is pretty much a mortar. It sets up and starts bombing the enemy! Do you know why? Because I’m gonna send more mobs at them and this gives them an extra concern, extra choice (see Tactician - Asherons Call 2).

Sure, just do whatever you can to impart fear and run into the group...go ahead and read the dmg front to back, back to front, idc...it won’t help as much as you think (unless you can read between the lines). Like hankering says, you’re just a player, but you are playing the world.
I don't even do xp. I level them up in terms of the story. They hit a milestone, they level up. The reward for them is that they get to play a tabletop game while I create the world and handle the mechanics. That's their reward.
Here's a simplified table for 5E-specific Monster Math. The math has several strange break points, so instead of a formula I provide default values for each CR:

Looking back at this table a few weeks later, I recognize it's still not very simple. Maybe I can try to simplify it more.

I'm young and I almost always only use homebrew with a little other shit on the side.
I homebrew no xp; i just tell the characters when they level. I base it on how they play, the story progression, and what I feel they need for their next story or quest.
I like the player bonus xp but i think i'm going to give a free inspiration die for use next game but the players choose who gets it.
The 3.5 XP struggle is real. Trying to pry my players out of level one when we have had semi-short monthly sessions. I am going to hack the living crap out of xp.
I think some people may be not that creative and they may be upset about people being able to create something.

I identify so much with having an interesting idea for your world but not knowing how to translate it into a mechanic that reinforces it in play
Man, for XP. If I don't like the number, I'll just give them a number I think is appropriate. Last game, they finished a boss, and it put them at the precipice of 6th level, so, I just put them at 6th.
I've had a homebrew idea to streamline D&D combat but haven't playtested yet. Why not drop the initiative & turn-based rules and play combat in (more or less) real time? Once combat begins, let players announce their actions (move 10 ft, attack with sword, nock arrow & release, cast fireball spell, etc.) and then move, roll their attack, or whatever. Players don't wait their turn to act but just start acting right at go. Combat should be kinetic and fast-paced, a frenzy of action that gets the adrenaline boosting. Instead the pace of a typical game immediately hits a speed bump when the DM announces "Roll for initiative." Sure, no-turn combat may get a bit chaotic when everyone is moving figures at once on the grid and declaring attacks. Sometimes the DM may need to hit pause to resolve sticky situations. At the very least no-turn combat will keep players off their smart phones and engaged in the game.

Sir I do not know your name but brother you are the shit!! I've been playing for years and have tried the hard core 3.5 and 3.75 and it has it's place but have most recently come to love the 5e simplistic antics that has freed me of the binding chains of rules. Trying very hard to make it more of a story and fun for my players and get them into their characters and where that leads than just crushing numbers and rules... Thank you, for validating so many issues that I have held reserve, to worried how it will turn out. One question though how do you wrap up all the different smaller encounters funnel into a final episode that clinches all the players and NPC's into good wins and bad looses or visa versa?
big question... usually the threat or 'big bad' in my stories is so insane, so all-annihilating, that a lot of unity comes in trying to survive or stop it...the details just work out...

My question... What do you think about a homebrew for base Attributes/Stats? I want abilities/skills to seem more realistic by having them tied to more than one stat bonuses. (e.g. Acrobatics skill level = Agility 2 + Strength 1 =3)

This one part is definitely not ill-conceived gobbledygook: 7:29 "Any question you ask at the game table about the game that you can't answer in a few seconds you need home brew." I hate sitting around waiting for people to figure rules out. After that, my next big hate is "downtime" played out at the session, which is part of the "Fuck Town" rule from a Drunkens & Dragons guy video way back. So boring.
Violet Deliriums damn dude. you are missing out on some awesome opportunities for roleplay... worldbuilding.... adventure seeds... so many things.
Miss, there are better ways of world building and role-play than downtime -- especially if one character's downtime lasts 1/2 hour at the table while everyone else sits around. The way I see it, downtime is a way of advancing a lot of time quickly to accomplish some task, where adventure time varies from fast pace (like when traveling) to very slow and detailed (during an encounter with role-pla or combat).

maybe im just too much into the rules of the game. but seriously there is so much stuff that is wildly unbalanced on the net thats its really annoying to have a level 3 character capable of defeating an ancient dragon ! at that with ease.
there is no such thing as unbalanced. it's fun or it's not. there's no such thing as knowing what you're doing. noob for life.
oh it was so fun running around with a sword that did 4d8 +10 slashing damage and 10d6 force damage that nothing has immunities to. i can safely say the DM had no fun whatsoever seeing me run thru all of his content just because he thought it was cool to give big weapons to his players. or have a whole campaign against gods, where your players ends up god slayers at level 5 because the DM wanted them to have every single legendary magic items right at the beginning. oh and allowing us to create our own with so few money.
or that time in 3.5 where my friend played crusader and simply wrecked everything i threw at him cause he was the healer of the group, the tank of the group, the damage dealer of the group and the crowd controller of the group because whoever designed that class just wanted to have a paladin, fighter, rogue character all in one without multi classing it. yeah totally balanced when you have to throw tarrasque minions with your godly badguy just to make a challenge to your level 5 players.
