The beginning of the episode with Terrence and Phillip is a throw back to the reveal of Cartman's father, instead of getting the follow up episode to the one that finished on a cliff hanger for the reveal, we got a massive troll from Trey and Matt and got a Terrence and Phillip episode.

14:33 “Doug” (Herzog) was the head of Viacom (who owns Comedy Central) at the time, and was supposed to make it a more direct message. Like “yeah, this isn’t a parody, we’re talking directly to you.”
And the ending was in response to Comedy Central claiming it was intolerant to Muslims religion (basically making excuses rather than saying they were scared), then they asked if they could do a scene where they literally sh*t on Jesus, and they were like, yeah that’s fine.

An underappreciated gag in this episode is the fight between Kyle and Cartman, which you paralleled with the Peter/Chicken fights from Family Guy. The underlying criticism of Family Guy from Matt and Trey is that the Family Guy gags are all interchangeable and random, and rarely have anything to do with the story of the episodes. So they took one of the most famous bits that Family Guy did (which itself was definitely inspired by the comically extended fight sequence in They Live), and rewrote it into this episode as an actual plot point driven by the characters involved. As if to say, "this is how you should do it."

The joke at the beginning you would understand if you were around for the first season. The first few episodes of South Park season 1 became this huge monster hit for Comedy Central back when it first aired in the late 90s... catapulting Matt & Trey to fame and Comedy Central to relevance. The network aired reruns of season 1 episodes basically nonstop (they do that today, too, along with Seinfeld and The Office... but... that's to compete with streaming services and a lot of networks do it now.. back in the 90s this was odd) for months and months, and M&T were under a ton of pressure to produce more content faster than they were able to at the time. The season 1 finale - "Cartman's Mom is a Dirty Slut" ended on this huge dramatic cliffhanger... which was supposed to be a joke poking fun at other series like Dallas that did similar things on TV in the 70s and 80s to try and guarantee that people tuned in for the next season's premiere. The cliffhanger was supposed to be the reveal of the identity of Eric Cartman's father... the whole town was gathered to find out.. because Mrs. Cartman was such a huge slut there was no way to know for sure without a DNA test. M&T figured that nobody would actually give a shit about who Eric Cartman's dad was... that wasn't the point to them... so it just a way to goof on old television tropes like they always do.
But... people were actually super anxious to find out... and also to get new South Park content... and they were waiting over a month to find out what the answer was. (the production schedule for season 1 was dragged out so long because it took longer to get the episodes done that there was only a five week gap between season 1 and season 2) After waiting and waiting for the conclusion to the story and the reveal of who Eric Cartman's father was... and the network hyping the hell out of nonstop all the time to build anticipation and drive up ratings... the premiere of season 2 finally aired.. on April 1st... and the show began with the same announcement: "... will NOT be seen today, so we can bring you this special presentation of Terrence and Philip: Not Without my Anus"
M&T punked their entire audience... people watched, dumbfounded, sitting through an entire episode of Terrence and Philip, thinking.. "holy shit, they're not actually going to do a WHOLE episode of nothing but Terrence and Philip, are they?? This has to be over at some point and they will get back to the REAL show and tell us who Eric Cartman's father is!" ...but... they were wrong. M&T really did make a whole Terrence and Philip episode, just to punk their audience, and because that's the sort of irreverent trolls that they are.
They thought it was hilarious. Tons of fans did not... and were furious... I still know today people who were big fans of South Park back in the day who have never watched another episode of the show since then because of this. Cartman's Mom is Still a Dirty Slut did not air until over 3 weeks later, and by then, half the audience was gone. M&T were pretty bummed out because of this... they thought the audience would get it... but it became one of the early touchstone moments in the series. And this is a callback to that...

Simpsons did the meta humour awfully well in their prime (ie. addressing their fans online critiques in the S8 episode with Poochy, parodying Fox constantly) but Trey and Matt took it to a new level with South Park. They showed they could make episodes that were allegories of something bigger or real, even with scenes (ie. showing people suspected of killing their loved ones while Butters' dad yells things like "Murderers! Tell us what you know!" or when Jimmy implores cheaters to confess while we see steroidal home run baseball players). But this 2-parter was literally them creating a story arc just to challenge their bosses' inconsistency on censorship. A brilliant peak moment of the show.

And yet a little accurate criticism of a fellow animated series stole the show. When they're on, there's no one better.

@@blaketindle4703 I mean RUclips already has a long list of "naughty words" that will get your comment immediately deleted. You say something about rich people exploiting poor people? Deleted. You point out how unfair the judicial system is against 50% of the population? Deleted. You say facts without beating around the bush that may not be liked by certain groups? Deleted. The list is long and it's getting longer.

That was no meta joke- in both of these episodes south park showed muhammed uncensored and sent it to comedy central, who ignored the message behind the episode and censored the images anyway. The creators were very upset about it.

Still funny to me that the message of this episode is for TV stations to support the first amendment and not give in to terrorism. About 4 years later in the real world, Comedy Central surrendered to terrorism.

Why do people have this perception of Family Guy being just joke after joke in cutaways unrelated to the plot? Sure, they have these sort of jokes from time to time, but they make like 5% of the runtime. Althought maybe it was more common in the first season and than they toned it down? I am not sure, I haven't seen FG in a long time, but I was watching it when I first seen this episode and my impression of FG was very different from what Trey and Matt presented here. For me, the cutaway jokes were never what was most memorable about Family Guy, actually I hardly even noticed it before South Park brought it up.
Edit: Actually found a graph on reddit. 😀 Episodes have on avarage 7 cutaways and average time for cutaway seems to be like 15 seconds and with the average episode length it seems come to like 7% of run time.
Also in later seasons the cutaways seem to be more dispersed, but in earlier season you often get several cutaway jokes in a row. This makes me think that Matt and Trey maybe only seen the first season and made their opinion based on that, which seems hardly fair, because if I would have to judge South Park only by the first season, I would think it was shit too. 😀

The main things that keeps South Park from cancellation is not just that no-one is safe, but their taboo jokes usually (USUALLY) are making social commentary that's deeper than just vulgarity for vulgarities sake. Cartman sucks, with apologies to Jessie Jackson, Dead Kids and Death Camp of Tolerance all are saying more than the jokes that might upset people. South Park freaking earned this over 2 and a half decades

Unnamed because they pick up right where they left off here. They are very hard to find because of their nature but ties in everything has South Park has done before with all its villains.

The whole concept of "It's either all OK, or none of it is" from this episode is a big part of why Isaac Hayes was forced to quit voicing Chef. Hayes had no problems cashing cheques when they were making fun of Jews, Christians, Mormons and yes even Muslims, but he had a big issue when it came to making fun of his own religion (Scientology). And that's even assuming you believe that he was the one to actually quit... Hayes' own son would come out later and claim that the church of Scientology made numerous public statements/decisions in regards to his role on South Park on Hayes behalf while he was still recovering from a series of strokes

he needs to upload more often, other channels are doing 3-10 South Park episodes in a week and branching into other shows, we are lucky to see 1 a week from Dash and because of how the algorithm works that will limit Dash's growth compared to others.
