I don't get it, you benched stock and OC with a 780, but not with a 3080? What's the point of it then? Obviously you'll be GPU bound with a 780. You're testing a CPU aren't you? So why not do a stock vs OC with a 3080? Shows the bottleneck and impact of clock speed. Also a comparison vs modern CPU + 3080 vs X79 + 3080...

    • @kurzschussbenchmarks

I don't get it either, so much time wasted just to show that a 780 is bottlenecking the cpu.

Xeon E5-1680 v2 is the CPU to use on X79. It was not an official consumer market CPU and was instead an Apple special that was to be found in their Mac Pro Trash Bin lineup (looked like a garbage can). That CPU was a monster. I have mine clocked at 4.8GHz. Yes, this one is multiplier unlocked. This CPU has been replaced, as my primary system, with a Ryzen 9 5950x.
Another interesting one is the Xeon E5-2697 v2 but that one is multiplier locked. You can use the boost/turbo multiplier coupled with a small BCLK overclock though. It also doesn't perform nearly as well as the E5-1680 v2 under gaming scenarios. I used this CPU for a while and only recently replaced that system with a Ryzen 7 5800x system.
X79 was a great platform, as you stated, if you used Ivy Bridge E.

I have recently built a PC using the X79 platform. The Chinese are still producing new motherboards with X79 and X99 and they even modernize them with NVME SSD support. For only 80$, I bought the motherboard, CPU and 16GB of ram. The CPU is the E5-2689 with 8 cores, 16 logical cores running from 2.6 to 3.6GHz. I paired it with a used RX 5700. The computer is able to run Cyberpunk with a decent FPS (50-60). For the total build price of 415$, it has incredible performance. Those CPUs aged so well because newer games have gotten more and more multicore optimized. The youtuber Miyconst has been building those systems with X79 and X99 and has a very interesting channel. He has made a couple of videos demonstrating how you can pair those old xeons with high performing GPUs without bottlenecking. He concludes that those platforms are indeed realistic options for budget gaming PCs. Anything below RTX 2080 or RX 6700 XT might not benefit from a more modern, stronger CPU, depending on the game. I have found that my xeon build has only bottlenecked in Rust, as it is highly CPU bound.

X79 had insane boards that even newer boards, that are double/triple as expensive now, with CPUs with even more lanes, still don't come close to in value, PCIe slots, I/O and more. My all-time favorite is the ASRock X79 Extreme 11; it had two PLX chips and an LSI RAID chip as well; insane SATA ports and USB ports, etc.

I rarely leave comments for videos but felt it's about time. I've been watching your videos for a while, and it's been great. I've had my interest for older hardware since around 2000. Getting 39 this year. When I was younger, I played around with DEC, SGI and Sun hardware and nowadays I'm doing with CPU's what you've done with GPU's. I'm planning to set up an Phoronix test suite on a swappable SSD testing out all Intel micro-architectures (1st, 2nd, 4th and 6th and later 12th. Skylake was long lived). I got this idea progressively when picking up my old P45 board with a Q9550 when I was bored in early winter last year. I then started to study the evolution of Intel chipsets and starting to calculate cost to get the X58, X79 and X99 to test on but the total cost was just not worth it. So, I calculated total cost on ordering all desktop platforms which was way cheaper. I ordered a P55 platform with i7-870, a Z68 with i7-2700K and a 6700K still looking for a decent Z170 board. Ideas? It would be nice talking to you some time on Discord or the like. Cheers mate!

@@nexus_tech I would like to create videos, but I've never done it before so I have barely any knowledge as to where to start. I have only recorded streams once upon a time for Twitch and RUclips but those are since long removed by me. But, perhaps we could do a collaboration and I could send you my results and specs and you could give me some ideas on video editing. Or I'll just figure it out on my own. I also wish I had more time, but I work full time within health care so I'm busy most of the time and when I'm off I'm kind of tired most of the time which isn't great for being creative and producing videos. It's been some rough years. Regarding the Z170 I'm thinking about the ASUS ROG MAXIMUS VIII EXTREME, ASUS Z170-K, Z170A KRAIT GAMING, GAMING M3 or GAMING PRO motherboard. I also got the MSI 970A SLI Krait Edition for the FX-8350 and it's a good motherboard. I've been using www.cpu-upgrade.com/index.html for a long time to get specs quickly on older motherboards and I wish it got updated but it is down since a couple of years. Cheers mate!

I'm enjoying my frankensteined X79 build just for the sake of tinkering but it's probably not worth buying today compared to a Zen+ or Zen 2 build from used parts unless you REALLY want 40 PCIe 3 lanes.
Upsides: - All the PCIe lanes. - IPC is decent for its time especially when overclocked, Intel didn't make major advantages in IPC and core count on desktops until years later and AMD of the 2010s were lagging behind anyway. - If your X79 motherboard has an X99 successor you can take the NVMe compatibility modules from that BIOS and slap them into yours (or potentially find a pre-modded BIOS online) and install an NVMe on a PCIe adapter in your rig, or like eight of them on bifurcated adapters seeing as how many PCIe lanes you have. - Did I mention all the PCIe lanes?
Downsides: - IPC is still only a product of its time and pales in comparison to CPUs from this decade even at the same core count. - Even the hexacores are a nightmare to cool when overclocked, can't even imagine how much of a furnace the sole overclockable octacore 1680v2 would be. My 1650v2 (practically equal to 4930K) runs at 4.4 GHz at stock voltage (1.20V) and still sprints to 90°C in benchmarks with a reasonably decent Scythe Mugen 5 Rev B air cooler on an open bench, so any further increase in voltage or clock speed would just make it thermal throttle, or I'd need a beefy AIO. - Not that I could increase it even if I wanted to because my board in particular, the Asus P9X79 WS, refuses to exceed 1.20V regardless of what OC settings I enable in the BIOS. - And another flaw of this board in particular is that the manual contains several errors and also describes a different BIOS interface and different BIOS settings from what I actually see on the screen half the time presumably because the entire section was simply copypasted from another manual because Asus thought the only people buying workstation boards are sysadmins who don't need manuals. Thanks, Asus.

I still don't get it, 6c/12t already existed since X58, and X79 made it more affordable.
Plus, HEDT boards are overbuilt, and you really don't need quad channel memory.
