Roger Waters wrote The Wall as a single story told in 26 songs. It is about a man who builds a psychological wall between himself and society because of all the crap in his life. (Father killed in war, overprotective mother, abusive teachers, cheating wife, hiding in bomb shelters during WWII, etc.) Each song is a chapter of the story. Some of it is based on real experiences (His father really did get killed in WWII when he was a baby) Some of it is based on observations of other people.
And watch the movie to get even a better picture of that mentally tortured guy wonderfully acted by Bob Gedolf, unfortunately the song Hey You is missing from the movie.
The wall is the story of a tortured soul in rock n roll. He (and mom) built a emotional wall to protect himself, but then found out that he was trapped.
Walls we build around ourselves or that we allow others to build. Often under the pretext of protection, but they end up being self made prisons. And we build them so high and strong that when we realize it, we can’t even break them down.
The "wall" is a metaphor for self-isolation. The main character of this album, Pink, choose isolation from the outside world as an act of self-defence against the pressures, the problems, the delusions of life. The wall represents this. In this specific piece, Pink wonders if the isolation behind the wall is the correct thing to do, after all. He feels that this course of action only leads to paranoia and madness. He seeks help, but only in fantasy: nobody can hear, because he already turned everyone away.
Yeah damn it if you want any chance to understand this album at all you must listen to it in its entirety from the beginning to the end This is a serious album about mental illness that was brought about by a tragic childhood and a messed up mother figure and then stardom. The Wall is built between the child and his fears and when grown the man is isolated from society, love and joy.
"The Wall" album from first to the last song is a one story about certain guy. You want to know meaning of "Hey You", You must listen entire album as one piece.
I always perceived the wall as that self defense you put up after experiencing anything traumatizing...you build this wall up to protect yourself but at the same time you end up trapping yourself
The wall in a nutshell is about alienation. Much like wish you were here is about absence or dark side of the moon is about madness, each Pink Floyd album supports a central theme. The wall explains, encloses and exposes Pinks experience.
My Ultimate Favorite Band...The Wall is a story so to follow lyrics you'll have to listen to songs in order...Brilliant musicians, Brilliant Movie... the "wall" is the self-isolating barrier we build over the course of our lives, and the "bricks in the wall" are the people and events that turn us inward and away from others...Peace and Thank you
Money is not evil. The worship of money is. Money is a tool-it can be used for good. I have been fortunate enough to help others because I know how much it sucks to be broke for most of my life.
As a 65 year old white women my first love in music was soul now called grown folks music. Then found zeppelin and Floyd. So much of music we enjoy started from black folks. Floyd is my top favorite plus Gil our. His guitar can bring you to tears. When you get it you get it
The wall refers to the emotional and psychological barriers we build to protect ourselves from the outside world which leads to feelings of isolation. In concert, the most expensive stage production of all time at the time. They actually built a wall on stage. Wish you were here is the album about Syd Barret
Please listen to every word of The Wall album first song to last, if you are still confused watch the movie called...you guessed it...The Wall. Love your reviews and I also love the fact you put a little lesson on our journey with Jesus our savior. Keep it coming...please.
@@michaelasay8587I'm not certain, it was a lot of things all at once, I think. Hippies, drugs, rock & roll, parents couldn't control their teens, vietnam protests. Yes, I think some of it were the words, but I wasn't a christian back then (hippie me) so I'm not 100%
Ok, seriously, you need to listen to this entire album without a break, it will blow your mind. Put some headphones on, lay back, and go for a ride. It is crazy. Pay close attention to comfortably numb and the guitar solo, then find the pulse concert in 94 and listen to that song live. It is a mind-blowing experience. I was fortunate enough to see them in 87. It was insane, like a religious experience.
Even though the whole story of the album The Wall is unrelated to the event that triggered the whole thing for Roger Waters, on tour in 1977 in a concert in Montréal, Roger got so pissed off at fans near the stage that he spat on them. He then thought that he should build a wall between himself and the crowd... the story evolved into something totally different, but on tour for The Wall they did build a wall on stage and played a part of the concert from behind it.
Another brick in the wall in amazing as well 🧱.. David Gilmour is life for me. I adore Pink Floyd, they are unlike any other band. There is nothing like experiencing Gilmour’s guitar solos.
The Wall is a metaphor for social boundaries that we are a part of. Pink Floyd wanted us to see them and rebel, stop being bricks in the wall. Very revolutionary.
"The Wall" is a virtual barrier that is built within singer Roger Water's mind - a barrier to shelter himself from the society. Like a wall built around a spurned lover's heart to prevent further heartache. The song "Hey You" he's calling out for help to those on the other side of his wall because by shutting himself in for his own protections, he has shut himself off from those who may be benevolent as well. The song sounds like two two people talking back and forth the first one someone outside trying to speak to him and gives up "the wall is too high as you can see" Then the person within the wall gets desperate as you hear in the stress of the last voice - begging for the other outside the wall not to give up, to keep trying and not tell him it's hopeless. "together we stand - divided we fall."
Dude Floyd is all about listening to the first song to the last and you’ll get all that info. It went over your head because you didn’t listen to disk one. 🥴💨

Hello, thank you for the video. I advise you to make, if you haven't done it yet, a reaction to the wonderful young singer Diana Ankudinova. This girl will surprise you with her artistry and rare timbre of voice. She has covers of famous songs, and also performs her own songs.
Try to listen to Don't Leave Me Now thats one of my fav song in The Wall album. You'll be hearing how eerie Pink Floyd can be esp with Roger Waters on the lead vocal giving his emotion out to the song. My second suggestion is The Trial because that song is really the most stand out from the others because its an operatic song and i really love that song. But for full experience i suggest you do 4 parts of the albums the first half of the first disc and part 2 do the second half and go on. Cuz the correct way to listen to Pink Floyd is listen to the whole album.
Hi Devin. I love Pink Floyd. I don’t know why no one had done it yet. That I know of. How about going through the wall album beginning to end. Like 1 or 2 songs a day. Also I have a challenge for you because we love The Bee Gees. React to “you should be dancing” by them and stay seated in your chair 😁❤️
WATCH THE MOVIE, FOR GOODNESS SAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!! All will become crystal clear. The songs on this album need to be listened to in order. That was Roger water's vision.
It's not about Syd, or the Berlin Wall. The Wall is a mental construct that the character 'Pink' builds to protect himself from the pain of life. He is aided in it's construction by various people in his life, such as his over-protective, controlling mother, sadistic, bullying teachers etc. It eventually becomes so tall and strong, that he's completely isolated and cut off from the rest of the World and the people in it. He descends into madness and depression. Is he doomed, or is there redemption? You'll have to listen to the whole album to find out... :)
There is certainly a story to follow in The Wall album but all one need do is relate it to their own life. We all have our own bricks and all of us, if we’re not careful, will find themselves behind a wall that nobody us can get through. After all it’s not easy banging your heart against some mad bugger’s wall.
Hey you is the realization that he can no longer continue in is self isolation . He begins crying out for outside influence to bring his sanity back but, it never comes. He’s too far gone. IMO.

The Final Cut album lays the foundations for The Wall.
The wall is an obstruction in his head he built from all the pain and suffering. He then loses himself and becomes trapped in his own self.
The wall is the story of a tortured soul in rock n roll. He (and mom) built a emotional wall to protect himself, but then found out that he was trapped.
