There are lot of underlooked non-singles. And some of them are really good :) Every Planet We Reach is Dead, Latin Simone, 5/4, O Green World, Ghost Train, Rockit, All Alone, Slow Country are some of them :)
There are quite a few great underrated songs that aren't singles. Including this one. I'd also include Man Research, Sound Check, M1 A1, Bill Murray, New Genius, and so on to the lists that people have composed in this comment section.
this one and rhinestone eyes always used to scare the shit out of me when I was younger. Now there is just something about it that reminds me of listening to it while driving down a dirt road in my truck in the dead of night. It brings me a lot of calmness, and not necessarily happiness, but content.
the audio is very clearly in the left channel: it's just there is some bleed into the right channel. and yes, it is stereo, because stereo is the only way there can be channel separation in the first place.
Has a night sound though. That and the title Starshine. I suppose trippin in the desert at night works. Daytime desert trip to this song also totally fits.

I remember my cousin gave me a bootlegged CD of this album when it first came out in 2001. Had never heard anything remotely close to it. Couldn’t be categorized and knew Gorillaz was going to be special in the yrs. to come
They're really something else, huh. It's as if they exist in between genres in their own little pocket universe. Powerful stuff, and frequently overlooked even by its own fans. Starshine is a prime example. It's a gorgeous song, but so underrated.
i adore this song, it sounds so horribly lonely and hopeless. it kind of gives me an image of a guy trapped under the rubble with rescue helicopters always going past him.
@@nysportsfan2576 oh my god, now everytime i hear this song i think of a lone astronaut in space drifting away as their oxygen runs low, then getting sucked into a black hole
I think about a lonely guy walking down the streets in the suburbs winout a cent to his name. Like a walking dead, with a 1000m stare. Well aware that is no way out of his misery, cursed with existing. Probably with some dark business on his belt. Who knows? Maybe some lenders are looking for him? Or he rated out some drug business and the drug lords are looking for his head. In any way, each breath is a borrowed one. A poor soul, walking down the street in a cold night, under the orange glow of sodium lightposts.

First time I heard "Starshine" was very late at night, I was 10 years old (year of the Gorillaz album release) and was playing Metal Gear Solid on Playstation in a dark and very cold winter night. I got so creeped out. This constant "White Noise" and the opacity where no gamma rays or any sort of light can't go through, desolate snowy land, sterile and barren landscape, absorbing and swallowing the slightest spark of joy or phosphorescent pigment. A monochromatic sky and a pernicious blizzard. If you scream, the sound will be annihilated. Anyway, it's a forgotten area where you're all alone. Like an Arctic explorer who'll never get rescued... Second time was because of Jean Reno in a fantastic movie named "Wasabi".
This song brings me a crushing feeling of nostalgia and it just makes me sad Brings me back to a time and a place that was so empty it still hurts me ...but it is a great song nonetheless
It reminds me of my pets Starlight and Starshine They had the same expression on their face, but different color pattern Starlight developed a disabling spinal problem I fought for 1 year trying to save her, there are no specialized vets in my area She developed eating and speaking problems, her voice became coarse One day Starlight disappeared I know what happened to her, but I don't know where she is Starshine is fine
I just wanted to say that ever since i've been a kid and listened to this album when it came out in 2001, this has been my all time favourite song. I still say that Starshine is the best song ever. There's something about it, i can't explain it.
Gorillaz, Demon Days, Plastic Beach, The Now Now, they all have this thing where the best songs are by the end of the album. Starshine is my favorite song from the band as well.
I have a funny idea for a music video. So its midnight and 2-D cant sleep cuz of his depressive thoughts and murdoc tries to get him to sleep by playing this to 2-D like a some sort of lullaby. And 2-D starts to sing to the lullaby. Murdoc gets the idea to make this a new song so he records it. And at the end of the song 2-D finally falls asleep. Yeah its a stupid idea but i like it
around 2004 I've learnt to play guitar and since then I've never stopped playing. In my early years with guitar, I started to play this "starshine" riff but I didn't what song it was or where I've heard it. For years, if I'm next to someone I always played that riff and asked if they knew what song that was. 2 weeks ago I started rewatching one of my childhood movies "Wasabi (2001)" and I heard this song again after all those years. and here I am finally reunited with my long lost favorite guitar riff.
welcome back... interesting story.. so sad no one you played it knew the song. edit: I just read about the movie and I remember watching it a long time ago, late at night in some random tv channel, the guy eating a whola lot of wasabi scene... Used to play this on a rainy day or when there's a beautiful sunset and the streetlights come on one by one. Imagine taking a walk listening to this.💋❤
SUCH A VIBE! I have a vivid memory of my childhood, in the porch of a rented house in the beach on a foggy and raining day, listening this awesome song on my disc player. For Real! What Nostalgia!
Today I lost the my aunt who inspired my relativity and was the person who understood me on a level that only my dad ever did I lost him to covid. They loved this band as much as I do I'm missing them so much.
This song has been in my psyche since I was 10 years old. This was my first most listened to CD. Everytime I play it now it's such a calming and "back to self" experience.
The strongest dose of nostalgia I get with any music is with this song and my memories of covertly obliterating my bedtime as a kid playing vanilla World of Warcraft on my laptop in bed and listening to this song and album. Shreking lvl ~30s on my lvl 60 T1/T2 Tauren druid in Stranglethorn Vale with this song specifically. Good times. "Staaaarfire never gonna gank meeeeee"
This sounds like peaceful hopelessness. Like those moments of numbness after you hit rock bottom, right before the fight mode kicks in again. One of my favorite songs from them.
I love this song, its so whimsical and everytime i listen to it i feel like im just alone and isolated. I just get lost in my thoughts like im in a dream and when it ends i wake up.

shout out to those who are suffering because their left ear/headphone/speaker is broken
Which is everyone. Just a bit of terrible panning on Gorillaz' part; still love this song though!

No, right is like broken
My right one is broken.

Always within 3 months from when i used them first.

Solution to ear bud problem:
1. Get splitters
2. Plug in two pairs of ear buds
3. Listen to both of the left ear buds
Woo
Or turn the audio into mono
I’m calling it, this is the most underrated song-😔🤚
i agree!
this song makes my chest hurt but like in a good way idk how to describe it
