Tech Deals had a great take on it. Linus even now still thinks he's running a small time company in his basement with his bros. You can't run a 100+ employee company like that, it just doesn't work that way.
That’s funny considering he’s admitted prior that he knows it’s not and has taken steps to resolve that.
If anyone wasn’t expecting this whole thing to blow up like this they clearly don’t understand this is the result of such a massive growth so fast. Linus admits he wasn’t ready for dealing with a business of this scale and got someone who could.
Even then I was still expecting this, so many errors are unavoidable when under the pressure from all sides. Some of it of their own making and some of it from trying to appease the fans and ever changing internet.
The internet as a whole needs to actually look at the facts, not take everything at face value, take time to look over stuff instead of just replying angrily at a moment’s notice.
I myself see LTT having a very high chance to be able to do the right thing through all this as the people there do care but just struggled with the responsibilities that come with growing.
No TLDR as that’s just part of the problem. If you are bothering to read the comments like this actually bother to read them. If you don’t have time to read them or even a full summary to learn about an issue please don’t give your impulsive response. I’ve seen far too many of those

I always felt like the quality of LTT has dropped off significantly since 2020 I use to watch Linus a lot from 2017 up until I say 2021 just because I simply lost interest. I feel like he shifted from being informative in his videos to simply being only an entertainer. I am honestly not surprised this has happened really, I had a feeling something wrong be going on behind the scenes at LMG
Agreed. Like a lot of folks, I had been watching him for years, but right around that same time-2020-I found the content to be a little too schtick and not enough substance any more.

When a company has problems like these it only needs to get started and then an "avalanche of truth" comes out about what's been going on. I have a feeling their new CEO is going to clean house after the 3rd party investigation is done. The more I hear about it, I just don't see a way forward without kicking some people out to send the signal that they mean business.

I've worked in small organisations (100 people) and large organisations (1K+) . I think a lot of their HR issues comes down to the fact that they're not able to make the transition from very small company to 2/3 levels of reporting properly.
Having said that all this drama farming on RUclips does suck. There's not much point in watching them all.
James sure need a course in corporate behaviour, he is high up enough to take accountability for his actions. Recorded or not. Sure people can be funny at the workplace (within reason), it is not the right time to blur it out at all, it undercuts the whole meeting. Linus is also at fault here not only that he didn't push James down for the comment, but not taking the whole thing serious, you can hear it in the relaxed voice. It is a serious meeting.

This is a serious mess.. But I hope it is not the end of LTT but a rebirth of a better LTT. But it will take some serious efforts, restructuring of the processes and change in work ethic to get there. But they certainly have the resources to improve and get better if they want to.
You can take the makeup off the clown and pluck off the clowns big red nose but the clown will always be a clown at the end of the day.

Linus is a good guy? Not buying it at all. The man's default is manipulation. On every accusation he gaslights and tries to get pity and play the victim. He clearly knew Madison left due to harassment, yet said he was shock3ed to hear about it recently. There is also no way he didn't know about the Glassdoor review. He knows what her position was, and the date of her departure. It doesn't take much brainpower to know that she wrote it. Several people on the internet evidently picked up that it was her.
Let's not forget that "somewhere in the middle" can also be "she got everything right save for one irrelevant fact".
He didn't like trans, so he let her get harassed or he at least didn't care.

For me, personally, I kinda stopped watching LTT when it started to feel like they were into entertainment but weren't really into "tech." They don't really DO anything. You do things. Distrotube does things. Lots of youtubers DO things. But it seems like all LTT did was just.. talk and hype. And I'm not into that. I'm into learning things and trying new things and experimenting. Not really into "tech" channels whose sole purpose is to just fill airwaves. Only interested in tech channels that have people actively doing things.

I'd like to think (as a Linux fanboy) that a lot of stuff went on that he just didn't know about. But boy. Oooooh boy. This is bad.
normally when dude or "twit" like this cant even shut up during a meeting it means he probably can't control himself in other areas and is a major liability.
What's happening with LTT and LMG as a whole is that it started as a small company with liked minded bros being bros but as it grew up the bros who are now in high management positions did not mature as the company grew and the new CEO will have to start cleaning house real quick if he wants to turn the company into a respectable media company. I think part of the reason the new CEO was brought in was to do the things Linus wouldn't want to do. Linus probably sees most of upper management as his friends so he will have a hard time firing them. The new CEO on the other hand doesn't and as long as Linus doesn't get in his way there's a chance LMG might be able to grow.

One thing that I can say is that there is likely not going to be any LTT + Gamers Nexus collabs any time soon. Steve went pretty hard with his videos on them. Nothing he said was wrong. I'd be surprised if within the next month or so he didn't get a polite knock on the door from the Canadian Mafia asking for an apology. 🤣
Personally I had to stop watching LTT because the ads/sponsor spots/merch call-outs are just insanely pervasive, annoying, and they have never made we want to buy anything they're selling. I use ad and sponsor blocks now, but they are still generally annoying as a brand. I've ditched a lot of the hardware centered channels anyways, focusing more on Linux and other content for my tech "edutainment".
uBlock Origin + Sponsor Block on RUclips cuts out like 15%+ of the video sometimes. Use to watch LTT up until a year ago when the content train got larger and larger, with all the different channels just became overwhelming garbage dumping. Quality dropped harder and harder and the cracks finally gave-way. Linus and the team are all very hard workers but they REALLY need to take a step back and focus on quality over quantity.
@@youdontneedmyrealname they need to focus on more of a "less is more" type strategy; quality over quantity. Another problem with tech channels is that they end up trying to get their videos out first when there's a release of any kind, rather than making a better version of the information. I'd rather maintain integrity than be on the bleeding edge and be wrong half the time. (Anything with software will have patches and updates of drivers that will improve things over time, for example.)
Slowing the pace of production and focusing more on the quality would be a great way to gain back some credibility. Also, making sure that they aren't showing any bias or favoritism is a good way to go, especially with things like laptops (since Linus is invested in Framework). My guess is that they won't improve in any real way and the decline will continue.
If I was in Linus' shoes, I can also think about some changes that I would personally make to the staff; mainly to lean it out and make it more effective. Having more people working on a bunch of different things that nobody is actually good at doesn't make for good content. They get a lot wrong. (Like any time they seem to touch Linux.) 🤣
Crazy thing... LTT published a video entitled "Linus Is An Introvert", it was a WAN Show video. Right in the middle of it, they took it down and set it to Private.... WTH ???!!!!
Was it on the LMG Clips channel? Might have been a scheduled upload.
@@theodoros_1234 it was the actual WAN Show. I was watching it, then the video stopped, and set to Private, or taken down, since I cannot find any evidence that it ever existed. The od thing, it was a WAN show, but after they took it down the total length of the video was about 23 minutes, WAN Shows are never that short.

That's part of the problem. Linus wants everybody to be like friends... in essence being too familiar to make statements you wouldn't make with complete strangers, normally. They need professional standards, time and place to be casual... but everything is a joke over there that it's hard to tell when people are being serious or not.

I had a female friend once who also overworked every friend she ever got. She did not have a company, just a small association, so there was no money involved.
Honestly I whole heartedly believe that all of this roots from James. Even in the videos going back 5 to 6 years ago you can easily tell James is just a total D bag behind the camera and in the work place. At the very very least at the end of all this James NEEDS to be fired immediately. You get rid of James and I really believe you get rid of all the issues and allegations in the future

Yeah it would send the message that there is change, no one is safe, as James is one of the core team members. I'd still miss him but I think it's the right path.

Honestly I'm not surprised, out of all the LTT staff who've appeared on camera significantly James is the only I know I wouldn't want to talk to. This recording and the clip of him at the comedy club telling racist jokes have been a real "wow I called that" moment

I think you're assuming too much perception/predisposition of the LMG crew anticipating the meeting with regard to the secret recording. I know where you're coming from with your corporate experience as I have the same. But understand that Linus really doesn't, and he started this company as like a backyard LAN party and never changed the tone of the acceptable behavior as it grew from a group of good friends to an actual organization which is why "the James comment". As for the reason to record the meeting, I'm banking that it was more of someone being loyal to Madison and not so much of "OMG I'M SO EXPOSING THIS NASTY COMPANY THAT I HATE BUT STILL WORK HERE BECAUSE I'M TRAPPED BUT ALSO BECAUSE I'M EXPOSING MEGA EVIL LIKE REMEMBER THE BLIZZARD CRAP OMG THIS LMG STUFF IS SO WORSE AAAHHHHH".
Madison's "confessions" are (for all intents and purposes) hearsay to the public at large with regard to what occurred at LMG, but while everyone wants to seize on the details of her allegations, I'm EXTREMELY disturbed as to why everyone seems completely oblivious to her declaring that she DELIBERATELY cut herself badly enough to need to go to the hospital so she could have a day off. That is someone that has been struggling with internal emotional and mental dysfunction for more than just "2 years at LMG". So for anyone that wants to jump on the "Goodwill Outreach To Madison" bandwagon to give her words of support, you REALLY need to encourage her to understand that whatever hot garbage fire LMG may or may not be, CUTTING YOURSELF JUST TO TAKE A SICK DAY IS A FAR MORE GIGANTIC, SERIOUS ALARM BELL THAT YOU NEED SERIOUS MENTAL HELP AND FAST! Although I think James's comment was in poor taste, I've worked in enough environments to know that certain places do have such jokes as permissible.
Good? Bad? Neither? Well, not really for me to say, but LMG doesn't seem to be like your standard corporate environment so it seems unlikely for them to prosecute this kind of thing, but maybe they did. Who knows..
Frankly I don't think what James said is that big of a deal, but I do think it's unwise and, like I said earlier, in poor taste.

@@modernscholar02 I have no clue, but it could be in reference to many countless things. Why should we assume the worst. I have no idea what the relationship between each individual person in that meeting is and neither do you. At the time every single person in the room could have been okay with it, or at least said they were okay with it. Some people lie and people lie for many reasons, not any of them are clear right now.
Lets not blindly assume the worst case scenario, lets wait to judge until we know all of the details.
Anyways, if ltt was half as bad as people claim, there would be so much more evidence of it directly from other youtubers. If ltt was as bad as people claim, mkbhd is guilty by association because there is no way he wouldn't have know with how much they interact with each other.

LTT have shown themselves to be more interested in marketing and entertainment than in serious technology analysis and measurement, to the point where misleading figures were published and not subsequently corrected. How can anyone ever take them seriously again?

We are about the same age. I know you are more Dallas but I'm Austin. We had a more pervasive tech bro culture than you guys did which is what I think LTT has. With that in mind, I have a feeling that Madison actually downplayed or straight forgot a lot of what she was exposed to because it's all so casual in environments like that.

The channel is more or less dead or on the verge to collapse due to Linus inability to touch the subjects right that need to be touched, adressed and solved now and seriously, not one fine day in the future.
For me the channel has gone in the second of the first 40 min. video about the huge amount of errors, mistakes, faults and Linus instant reply that roughly nothing was that serious wrong.
He had put a VW part into the Mercedes engine and complained how terrible this VW part has been made with no fit and what not.
Sorry, that was too much and this harrasment thing was another point, the whole way it has been dealt with even though there is not prove, just one woman talking, but also in a detailed explanations which seems plausible, might be true cause it had happened so often before.

If you think someone asking if their boss was going to dance on a table was awful enough to sack them you would have multiple heart attacks in my industry. Also I wouldn’t hire you if you think it was a terrible thing to say, (if someone said the same thing to someone with a lower perceived rank to them I would probably have a word with them)

I don't get why LTT needs to be "done" from what I've read. Couldn't they just fire James? I don't see why everyone is so eager to take down the whole ship just because there are some bad crew members.
James is not the cause of everything. It comes from Linus not being a competent Leader to lead a company of the size of LMG today. While his play fast and loose helped him reach the promise land this style of approach doesn't help staying there. The new CEO with experience working at big companies should if given the tools be able to clean house which is what LMG and LTT needs.

its just that linus never try to acknowledge the criticism directed to him, while luke always able to read the sentiment of the community, but not going hard enough to enlighten linus on that.
in addition all of the linus bad attitude to the community and his critics also compounded his current situation, he made merch to diss his critic back in the day, never being able to read the community sentiment - and just keep playing victim card when he got called out. pretty much what he was doing until that last response on the forum, i doubt he even watch GN vid properly, since he always get "read the comment on the video only, and get summary from someone else" treatment.
Titus Tech Tips
I don’t wish anyone ill, but I do appreciate just results and accountability for actions. Everybody wants fairness until they have to pay the piper, but even a modicum of real, honest, sincere accountability goes a long way. I used to love Linus et al, and I think he’s always been a very charismatic, creative guy who built a great cast of characters around him. But you don’t get to be a big shot without stepping up and being a good manager, introvert or not. It’s ludicrous to try and excuse immaturity and continue to assert (without any evidence) that Linus is a good guy, because as a better man always said, that which can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence. When the rubber meets the road, Linus needs to actually be a good guy, not just proclaimed a good guy by his sympathizers online. I wish the whole crew nothing but the best, honestly, but I also wish he would just step up, take his lumps, and either push forward or bow out of the space. At this stage of his career, he has asked for everything he’s gotten-good and bad-and he’s not a victim in any way. Good guys own that kind of thing and do better. I ain’t perfect either, nobody is, but I also don’t run a media empire nor have I been so sloppy in how I’ve handled my mistakes. He asked for the platform, he asked for the spotlight, and now is the true time to perform. Whether he did or didn’t penetrate any of the mistakes directly, the buck stops with him and he needs to own it like the boss he’s asked to be.

I worked in Hollywood, both in production (analytical) and as “talent” (creative) and creative people tend to do best when _not_ managed.
Generally speaking you hire creative people to make independent decisions. And you generally hire analytical people to follow instructions. Generally analytical people require more oversight and need more direct leadership.
In contrast, creative types are either fairly hands off and very self driven people who don’t need much oversight, or they are infantile toddlers from hell who you could not control or manage if you tried. Very little in between. They either don’t need to be told what to do because they are independent and decisive, or you could not tell them what to do if you tried and it’s not a good fit.
Are you saying that the hair stylist should just freestyle anything they want, but the accountant needs to be micromanaged?
@@wisnoskij Hairstylists are not counted as “creatives” in that industry necessarily. They are counted among “production staff”. While they get a lot of creative freedom they often have to do what they are told whether they like it or not, and if someone disagrees with their decision they have no ability to override anyone. More like they are treated as highly skilled laborers rather than “artists”. And art departments are highly technically proficient and also highly creative, but they are also not classified as such in the Entertainment industry either. They are considered highly skilled laborers as well, but not “creatives”.
And yes. Definitely. An accountant has zero ability to create his own work. An accountant has no job without an account, he can’t “wing it” or “improvise”. Someone has to hand an accountant a stack of accounts and say “do this”, or they do not have anything to do. Without someone managing an accountant they have no ability to work at all, because they are only there to work on the accounts given to them by management.

Also, no you dont manage an accountant as in telling them how to do their job. However one is certainly more replaceable than the other and that’s just life. You can swap out a thousand hairdressers or accountants or carpenters, but you can’t swap out the entire reason that people are going to see the movie (actor) or he script itself (writers) or what is being shown on film (director) without multiple millions of loses.
Again that’s just life, not my opinion. So one group of people per the industry’s needs and expectations, is easily replaced, and the other is not. You might get one Tarantino or Rod Serling a generation, you can hire accountants from any business school or college on earth.

You hire an accountant because they know how to follow rules and instructions, and you give them the accounts to manage. Accountants literally have no purpose whatsoever without an account to manage.
When an account closes, you manage what account they get next. The accountants have zero ability to find new accounts? They can’t generate new work or bring in extra income? They are solely following instructions and they are then carrying out their specific tasks according to their training which has little deviation.
You are implying that means more or less on some kind of scale of human value? That’s your point and your hang ups. But objectively an accountant is more replaceable than a creative in the film industry. In high finance obviously that value proposition is totally inverted and creative departments are replaceable and accountants are highly specialized and important positions.

Well I am very sceptical of audio only recordings these days, which is why I never bought the Russian chef's (Prigozhin) recordings as proof of life as they are way too easy to forge these days.
Forging a video with audio is a lot more difficult currently as there are too many details to screw up on and the cost of doing that right is still fairly high, meaning the amount of attackers seeing that as a profit is fairly low. (in an ex employee vs LMG case.)

But I delivered, every time. But still it may have been a tough time for the others in our company.
