True American hero. I was 7 when this broke. I remember my parents being glued to the TV watching CBS news as the story broke. Obviously I did not understand what was going on but my uncle,, my mom's brother, had survived a tour in Vietnam so the story was very important and I remember my parents talking about it with such passion and fully supported what he had done and were happy when he was eventually vindicated.
Ellsberg's case ultimately went to the Supreme Court who ruled in his favor, saying that the New York Times had the right to publish the Classified Pentagon Papers protected under the 1st Amendment.
Lawyer, here. This is inaccurate. Ellsberg was not a party to the Pentagon Papers case. That was the New York Times. The Court held that once NYT was in possession of the information, the Government could not meet it's burden to prove that they should be able to exercise "prior restraint" on NYT's speech. Ellsberg's charges were dismissed in a separate case, unrelated to the publication of the info,
I remember watching this on the news. Thank you so much for rebroadcasting this for those generations that did not know and those of us that need to be reminded. His contributions save lives and changed the world for the better. I won’t be forever in his debts and admire, respect and love him every day for the rest of my life. ❤
two things here: Ellsberg a brilliant and caring man who saw wrong and tried to right it and Cronkite who took his job seriously and presented in the most professional manner ever in the history of news broadcasting.
I was 15, it was quite the eye-opener to my burgeoning questions about - well, everything! seeing Cronkite sure takes me back to a time when newscasters were believable and strived to not put their personal spin on the news - oh, and the whole trying their best to be accurate/factual. that was nice, I miss it.
Meanwhile, your network interviews MAGA Republicans five hundred times as often as you interview Daniel Ellsberg or colleagues of his like Noam Chomsky or Jeffrey Sachs.
The pentagon papers!..holy cow!..these archives are valuable to this day..CBS has archives on everything I bet..what about Taft and Dewey Ike and the others?..

Enormous courage to stand in the line of fire. This is something we rarely see these days
Was there a cabal behind him?
A true American hero and patriot--he put his life and freedom on the line for this country, while others did nothing and perpetuated the lie. RIP
"Wouldn't you go to prison to help stop this war?" 😔

Yes what a horrible thing to understand. All our boys dead and our government knew for years we could never win
As an ex New York Times director said, days are ended for free press.
Our government does the most unscrupulous deeds around the world and then points the finger at others.
National Security business as usual.
They ALL do. Conquer or be conquered.
Vietnamese war was a blood bath.. somebody had to stop it ,this was the beginning of the end

Rest in power, Dan Ellsberg! 👍✌️
Is this a "compare and contrast" prompt?
What might have been the outcome of the release had he done it during the Johnson administration?

This is similar to what Marjorie Taylor Greene did, by taking notes, and releasing the information she hear, and read in a SCIF.
