    You wouldn't believe how hard it is to get the blade to make that "whoosh" sound. These guys are doing it like it's nothing.

      Ballowall their sword has a "bo-hi" or blood groove.. you'll see that carved straight paralel to the sword close to the back/dull side of the blade.. and that what creates the swooshing sound

    • @math001
      @math001 6 лет назад +26

      Is it really? I can make a standard pipe or any other metal that you can hold like a sword sound like that. I don't understand what makes it harder for a sword. This is an honest question. It's just that I always see lots of comments in youtube overglorifying bushido but then one who practices the real thing shows up and says it's all basic stuff.

      @@math001 most of the time you end up getting a fwooshing noise regardless, if you swing hard enough. But to get that higher-pitch, clean woosh sound that these guys got every time requires precision. Your sword's blade has to be perfectly in line with your arm and the line of drive. When you swing it with precision, there should be no noticeable resistance vs when you just swing. Precise swings will get you a high pitched woosh, non-precise will get you a lower fwoosh sound.

    Forsakened I am awakened
    A phoenix’s ash in dark divine
    Descending misery
    Destiny chasing time
    Inherit the nightmare, surrounded by fate
    Can't run away
    Keep walking the line, between the light
    Led astray
    Through vacant halls I won't surrender
    The truth revealed in eyes of ember
    We fight through fire and ice forever
    Two souls once lost, and now they remember
    I am the storm that is approaching
    Provoking black clouds in isolation
    I am reclaimer of my name
    Born in flames, I have been blessed
    My family crest is a demon of death
    Forsakened, I am awakened
    A phoenix's ash in dark divine
    Descending misery
    Destiny chasing time
    Disappear into the night
    Lost shadows left behind
    Obsession's pulling me
    Fading, I've come to take what's mine
    Lurking in the shadows under veil of night
    Constellations of blood pirouette
    Dancing through the graves of those who stand at my feet
    Dreams of the black throne I keep on repeat
    A derelict of dark, summoned from the ashes
    The puppet master congregates all the masses
    Pulling strings, twisting minds as blades hit
    You want this power? Then come try and take it
    Beyond the tree, fire burns
    Secret love, bloodline yearns
    Dark minds embrace, crimson joy
    Does your dim heart heal or destroy?
    Bury the light deep within
    Cast aside, there's no coming home
    We're burning chaos in the wind
    Drifting in the ocean all alone

      really-that was pretty basic chiburi

    • @seikibrian8641
      @seikibrian8641 7 лет назад +21

      + billy bill -- You'll usually start off with a bokken (wooden sword) before moving on to an iaito (unsharpened alloy sword), and only after many years will you use a shinken (live blade). Learning the chiburi isn't as hard as it may look, and you'll probably only hit yourself in the head once before you learn what not to do. ;-)

    • @jadekayak01
      @jadekayak01 7 лет назад +3

      SeikiBrian really.
      at the school i went to we started with a boken and 3 weejs later i was on a live blade-no iaito
      i suppose its all about safety.if you can handle a boken your given a chance with something else.
      also iaito are incredibly expensive for what they are and you cannot really learn when handling a toy

    • @seikibrian8641
      @seikibrian8641 7 лет назад +3

      I said "usually" move on to an iaito, not "always." Yes, iaito can be expensive, but so is a proper shinken. In my dojo, beginners often got iaito in the $300 - $500 dollar range; my most recent iaito was well over $1300. But a proper shinken will also be over $1,000...if not triple that or more. (And an iaito is not "a toy" in the right hands. If you think so you are extremely naive.)

    • @RoboBoddicker
      @RoboBoddicker 7 лет назад +2

      Iaito are popular in Japan because live blades are illegal to own there. The only real swords you can get are shinken made by licensed smiths who do everything the traditional way, and they cost thousands of dollars.

It is made to be slow young men. If they will do that on a quick iai like in kenjutsu... U wont see the beauty of the move at all... For itll be over too soon.
    Iaijutsu is an art of death... Its beauty can only be shown when it cuts down enemy...
    Iaido is an art of decipline... And the precision accuracy and mastery of this men shows they are worthy masters.

    Question: why is blade sheathing part of the kata? why would you sheath your blade immediately after supposedly hitting the opponent, without wiping it with cloth first? Blood on the blade going into the scabbard can cause all sorts of maintenance issues later on.

    • @wladff
      @wladff 6 лет назад +2

      The way you sheath your sword shows your level of both training and understanding of basic principles of the fight that's why it is included in kata. Also, you obviously can not start the next kata with a sword in your hand :). In kenjutsu there is also a special movement meant to shake off blood and other remains from the blade. You can see a sort of such movement in some katas here as well.

      They look a lot easier than they actually are, because they trained decades to do these movements as precise and efficiently as possible. It's not supposed to be flashy. And yes, it is more about meditation than fighting but trust me, it can still be a highly competitive sport if you want it to be.

    So..... does anything interesting ever happen with this? I can understand kendo and kyudo... but this is just like that really slow play fighting you do as kids. Granted their toys are cooler. The only thing I can see as skill from this is poise, but I don't see the finesse.

      These movements are incredible precise. It's not supposed to be flashy. It's not supposed to be viable in a real fight (although the skills aquired by training this are). It's meant to be a challenging exercise for both body and mind. Every single detail of the form is important - if it looks easy, it's because they trained decades to make it look fluent and flawless.

      Your comment is historically incorrect. Samurai never fought on the battle field with iaido. The arts of iaido or drawing the sword, was developed in Edo period, an era where peace was established in Japan. The only time iaido might have been used was during duels. Even there, contrary to what movies says, duels were mostly forbidden.

    Even if these guys are slowing their movements for the sake of showing off their precision, these moves are so impractical. They are so telegraphed, that if youre dumb enough to get hit by it, you deserve to be cut down by it. Moreover, schools where they teach this kind of garbage is exactly the kind of thing that Musashi criticized in his book of five rings because as he pointed out, they focus on all the wrong things instead of the things that will make you a fine swordsman. Its akin to a basketball player who is over geared, wears headbands, wristbands, elbow pads, knee pads, jock strap, mouthguard, faceguard, tape, impeccable uniform and so on.. and thinks those things will make him a better basketball player, instead of practicing his jump shot.

    • @Catubrannos
      @Catubrannos 6 лет назад +1

      Their moves are not telegraphed. Try to imagine too you are standing in front of them rather than way back with the distance the camera provides. A younger person doing this who needs this to survive will be better sure, but these guys show fluid economic motion in the draw.

      In a sense, you are right. Modern Iaido isn't meant to be a combative form of swordsmanship. It's intent is to give a basic idea of how to handle the sword for Kendo players and to develop a form of aesthetics and a sense of awareness. But tell me. You quote Musashi a fair bit. Have you trained in Niten Ichi Ryu or some other form of kenjutsu?

    • @Catubrannos
      @Catubrannos 6 лет назад

    Something tells me these guys don't even remotely hold a candle to when katanas were more practical. I find these guys to be incredibly slow - true iaido is going to be practically impossible to see otherwise there's really no point in it being invented as a surprise attack. This isn't impressive, unfortunately - and it seems the best swordsplay died with Miyamoto Musashi, and apparently nobody read his books...I can't help but feel they're wasting their time with moves that no longer even preserve the art, and aren't practical - and therefore useless. These 8th dan's would get stomped by a novice in the Edo period, I bet you anything. Martial arts without practical sparring isn't even martial arts, it's rehearsed dance. Too many "masters" and not enough students. I'm literally faster than they are and I'm not even practiced. Being old isn't an excuse, they're 8th Dan's, so what is? I can only gripe if it is in slow motion.

    • @maskcollector6949

      There's nothing ridiculous about criticizing an attack that is meant to be the first to hit, I've studied martial arts history well enough to have an opinion on the subject. Read Book of Five Rings and it will mention blinding fast strikes, case in point. Considering it was written by the only undefeated and likely the best samurai/ronin in history, I wouldn't take it lightly. I just think the true ki is no longer felt in modern iaido, it's missing something. If my opinions upset you, that's a personal problem, I'm more concerned with the actual preservation of martial arts - telling me to keep my ideas to myself when they have grounded basis in fact is rather ludicrous, however. Don't try and tell me Musashi didn't practice quick-drawing his sword out of his scabbard because that's unrealistic. No, he has as strike called "the strike of non-thought" which he would have used for his quick-draws. I'm basing my opinions on evidence, you are just complaining because you're probably a practitioner of kendo, etc, and several of you seem to have quite the high horse.

    • @teflondrunk

      I think modern iaido has more to do with mental and spiritual harmony or something to that effect. A sword isn't a great weapon, especially in the modern day where guns are relatively common.
