  • 💡 This video is a teaser to raise your awareness as a European citizen. It gives you insight into the DNA of the European Union (citizenship competence in education and beyond). Will you rise to the challenge and become an empowered, active, informed and critical-thinking EU citizen?
📜 Anyone with the nationality of a European Union Member State is automatically a European citizen too. The EU is a common governance structure enacting a wide range of EU rules that have a direct impact on our daily lives. They grant you rights and duties. Because you live in a democracy, as an EU citizen you can have your say when EU rules are made, e.g. through elections. You live in an open space without internal frontiers, with free movement of persons, goods, services and capital (internal market). Third-country nationals cannot enter just like that. Concrete cases (stories) illustrate that you can go to court to have your EU rights respected, for instance on discrimination, environmental pollution or internet safety.
The EU is based on common values: respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law, respect for human rights, pluralism, tolerance and solidarity.
As an EU citizen, you can take matters into your own hands. You can be informed and critical, participate and - where necessary - stand up for your EU rights.
📆 This video was made for the courses 'European citizenship' (Education masters) and ‘EU citizenship education’ (BAES) in 2023.
