  • Not only did The Jordanaires support Elvis in the studio and on the road, they were also extremely successful in their own right, singing on over 8 billion sold records.

      jeffrey conyers yes, indeed. And you likely know, Ray joined in early 1958 and is the one heard on most of the Presley recordings and classic “Nashville Sound” releases.

    Thanks for doing this tribute. They were an integral part of the success of so many famous artists. They were a wall of sound made of pure silk or velvet that became the support for the lead vocal. It was their voices that helped the voice of Elvis and so many more stand out. Elvis, Ricky Nelson, Patsy Cline and so many more. I was truly blessed to have worked with and also to share a multi year friendship with, the Jordanaires. Gordon Stoker was a wonderful mentor to me and not only a great tenor but also a very sharp business man. It was his philosophies and methods I followed in my own business dealings in entertainment. Gordon never uttered a vulgar word in all the years I knew him. Neil Mathews was a true gentlemen and masterful at his arrangements. He actually came up with the numbers system for chord indications which is still used in studios, not just in Nashville, but throughout the world. Hoyt Hawkins was just so kind and kept us smiling and Ray Walker the bass singer, has been my friend for over 40 years. Not only is he a highly talented singer in his own right but he really laid the foundation with his bass vocals to hit after hit after hit. Elvis relied on him so much and got such a kick out of working with him in the studio and movies. He deserves the recognition due him for his contributions to countless hits as well. Ladies and gentlemen, the legendary Jordanaires, the voices behind, the voices of Country, Gospel and Rock N Roll.

    Once in the early 70's, Elvis was asked why the Jordanaires weren't with him on tour. Elvis answered, he couldn't get them out of Nashville. Now we know why. Been on the backings of recordings that sold over 8 billion. Incredible. Would have been awesome for them to have toured with Elvis in the 70's.

      It was a year or two ago when I just happened to catch him with the fabulous Jordanaires singing, "Don't" on RUclips. I never heard of him before that, but I about fell off my chair when I heard him singing! He sounded great! Very talented man, sorry about the problems he encountered & leaving his Country because of it. Just today, I read someone's post about that. I'm glad I got to view his videos doing his Elvis songs, love them.
      RIP Freddie- - - 😔🌹

    On RUclips, if you find Freddie Starr with the Jordanaires, you will see the best vocal imitation of Elvis by Freddie ( singing a superb rendition of ' Don't ' ) and the most faithful musical backing by the studio musicians with of course, the great Joranaires , in person making it sound like Elvis in person.I think Freddie was a very talented guy but lost his way with personal problems and falling g out with the wrong ,but powerful ,media people..But RIP Freddie.

      Yes, Freddie did a wonderful tribute to his hero, and was like a delighted kid with a new toy when he had The Jordanaires accompany him. Freddie was a comedy genius, impressionist, singer and all round professional entertainer to equal anyone. At his peak he was loved by millions because of his Star quality, and no charges were even brought against him, let alone anything bad proved against the poor man. I believe he felt hounded out of his own country, that he loved so much, and it killed him as surely as a bullet through the heart. Shame on those responsible.

    What happened to the Jordanaires? They went on to become one of the most recorded vocal groups in the history of popular music.
    By 1952, the Jordanaires were begining to provide backup vocals in the recording studios behind the biggest stars in country music. All the while continuing to record gospel music for producer Ken Nelson and Capitol records. Those gospel recordings are still an influence on gospel groups today. Just ask Bill Gaither or listen to the Gaither Vocal Band’s version of Swing Down Chariot from only a few years ago. It’s a dead copy of the Jordanaires version from the 1950’s.
    If you listen to any song on the Heavenly Spirit or Gloryland Capitol albums the Jordanaires recorded for Capitol in the 1950’s, their wonderful vocal blend, the sophistication of sound and arrangements are obvious. Totally unlike anything other southern gospel groups were doing at the time.
    Elvis requested the Jordanaires to join him for his first RCA Records session. He knew from hearing them on Grand Ole Opry broadcasts that they were at the forefront of the new “rhythm” gospel quartet sound and feel, which he loved. Elvis knew they were versatile enough to sing show tunes, pop tunes, barbershop music, or any other style that he needed because that’s exactly what they were doing with Eddy Arnold on his 1955 Eddy Arnold time TV show. Elvis first approached them in Memphis when they were appearing with Eddy.
    Whether you like their vocals or not on Elvis’ records, most times Elvis told them what he wanted them to sing. When he was starting his Las Vegas appearances, he asked them to accompany him. They were so busy working in the comfortable confines of the recording studio that they had to turn him down.
    They were at the forefront of a sound combining spirituals with other styles of music. Elvis knew that. So did Capitol records, the major movie companies and the record producers in Nashville and Hollywood. That’s why their background voices can be heard on best selling recordings for 60 years. They are heard on Grammy winning recordings from 1959 thought 2007. Six decades!!!
    You can still hear their background singing today in feature film soundtracks and on worldwide television commercials for Nissan, Jose Cuervo Tequila and Heineken beer, just to name a few.
    What happened to the Jordanaires indeed!

      The songs that had a mix of female and male backing vocals: "That Wonderful Someone", "Three Cigarettes in an Ashtray", "Just Out Of Reach (of My two open arms), featured The Anita Kerr Singers.
      Those were the two main backing groups at the time. Both could sing a cancer diagnosis, and, warrant an encore.

    The statement at 0:45 about the Jordanaires backing Elvis on "Heartbreak Hotel" is incorrect. There are no backing vocals on that song, just the lead vocal from Elvis.

    • @jerrybrownell3415

      The lead guitar by Scotty Moore on "Heartbreak Hotel" has been rated one of the worst if not the worst lead
      work on any song in any genre. It wasn't Moore's fault though who was actually a very good player but for the
      fact it was and always will be a lousy song. Elvis did the best he could with it.

    Wonderful to honor this incomparable vocal group, but there are a few errors throughout. Largely, Hugh Jarret was replaced by bass singer Ray Walker in early 1958. As seen in many of the photos in this video. At 86 years young, he is still alive and well (as of 4/7/20). It’s the combination of Gordon Stoker, Neal Matthews, Hoyt Hawkins & Ray Walker that are heard on most all the classic country and pop records the group was a part of, and the members inducted into the many Halls Of Fames.

    They were under contract with Elvis from 1956 until 1968 and though he let them sing on other artists records he would not allow them to have performing credit on any record label. The Jordanaire's sang back up on all of Patsy Clines records from 1959 until her death. They sang back up on all of Ricky Nelson's records from 1958 until 1965. On the Ozzie & Harriet TV Show when Ricky would lip sync his latest hit at the end of the show his band the James Burton Trio would lip sync the Jordanaires part. A partial list of records
    they performed on include: "It's Only Make Believe"-Conway Twitty (1958)/"Four Walls"-
    Jim Reeves(1957)/"Second Hand Love"-Connie Francis(1962)/ "Tell Laura I Love Her"-
    Ray Peterson(1960)/"Oh, Lonesome Me"-Don Gibson(1958)/"El Paso"-Marty Robbins

    The Jordanaires were the past, Elvis was the future. They ruined a lot of his records and never had any business being on Elvis' records. Listen to their addition on songs like Don't Be Cruel, Stuck On You and Hound Dog, totally ruined those songs for me. I wish The Elvis Estate would release Elvis' music on digital platforms without their background vocals, just turn their mic all the way down in the final mix. His records sound so much more modern without their very traditional and old school background vocals.

    • @Alpha11
      @Alpha11  7 лет назад +2

      That would be interesting. I wonder if you pan the audio left or right if you could remove their vocals. I'll give it a try. Though I do enjoy them on Elvis' records. Thanks again, Jimmy!

    • @littlejimmyscumbag2551
      @littlejimmyscumbag2551 7 лет назад +1

      +Alpha11, yes on the records in stereo where The Jordanaires' mic is panned to the left/right, you can edit it on programs like FL Studio/Audacity to mute the left/right channel. I've done it for a few of his songs like Stuck On You and it's amazing how much better the records are with just Elvis' beautiful and modern voice and the instrumentals. The Jordanaires were just too traditional and old school, that stuff is out of style in today's age and even for the 50's they were very middle aged/gospel orientated. They were considered old school even in the 50's. Whereas Elvis is universal, forever, the past, present and future. He will always be someone worth listening to. If they muted The Jordanaires Elvis' music would be much more appealing to young people today.
