The "causeway" is called the Ayre and is the original Viking harbour wall - a natural protective shingle bank along the northern side of their harbour. The entrance was roughly where the Mills Petrol Station is now. Today the Peedie Sea [or "Peerie Sea"] is a boating bond with waterfowl and is certainly no longer deep enough for ships.

I love Orkney. My family on my mother's side is originally from Stromness in the West mainland of Orkney and I have visited Orkney many, many times. So I regard myself as Orcadian and return every year without fail. I love it more and more as the years pass. I think I would like to retire there in due course ... maybe. Having said that, there is lot of Orkney I have never visited. I know the Mainland and the connected islands, but I have never been to Hoy or Sanday. There is much to explore. Orkney has everything you could possibly want in life. There's nowhere like it. Everywhere you go you are bound to trip over neo-lithic or Viking remains and the bird life and wildlife is wonderful. I was told and know where the Orkney primrose grows and return every year to see its tiny little flowers in the summer. What a cheerful sight, this tiny indomitable flower braving the salty wind on the cliffs. Foodwise it is also fantastic with great restaurants specialising in fish, beef or North Ronaldsay lamb with local veg. There are two university campuses if you want to study and the new hospital gives all the health support one could possibly want including specialist services. A truly wonderful place and the people are so welcoming. A wonderful place to visit or to live.

When we visited North Ronaldsay we stayed in the Bird Observatory and enjoyed the delicious lamb from the island at one meal. I remember catching a six-seater plane (can't remember where we were going). It was like catching the bus! The pilot climbed on board, and said "Right, ladies and gentleman (my husband), the emergency instructions are on a card in the pocket on the back of the seat in front of you! But basically, all you need to remember is; if I'm not here, you shouldn't be either! I really LOVE Orkney!

    HI Henry
the boats used to come all the way up to the steps of the cathedral in front of the town hall --- from the steps of the cathedral to the peedie sea ( the round boating pond now ) is all reclaimed -- a few years ago archaeologists dug trenches in gardens behind the main ST there were jetties and small piers every where I saw one behind the royal bank in there garden ground

The power station is only there for emergencies! Orkney has been self-sufficient in electrical generation from renewable resources (wind, solar, wave and tidal) since 2013!
