- Built in the 1970s using recycled wood and other salvaged materials, Tapu Te Ranga was one of Pōneke's most distinctive buildings - until it burned to the ground early one morning in 2019. Filmed over the decade prior, this documentary tells the story of the unique marae in the words of its founder, Bruce Stewart.

What an amazing & unique construction that Marae is, truly a beautiful building OF Aotearoa, a very very rare thing.
So many beautiful memories here at Tapu Tē Ranga! So grateful for Bruce and his whānau for opening their whare to make it all of our whare 🥰

Auee, taku roimata ki te marae me te whanau.
Kia kaha!❤
Awesome marae and tikanga from matua Bruce, so so sad it got caught on fire. He was such a real rangatira with a unique vision.
Moe mai moe mai e matua rangatira Bruce, moe mai i roto i te wa kainga o to tatou tupuna me te Atua... ❤
I remember walking through the forest in the Ureweras with a maori guide. He took us through an area that was tapu. He said there are bad spirits there so he did a song and a little dance and then said that the spirits said to him that they are happy now. So we sat down for a break. I took a banana out of my backpack to have a feed and all of a sudden the banana turned from a left-hand bent banana into a right-hand bent banana.
So the guy who built the CTV building in Chch gets off but they're happy to put the effort in to try and shut down this place... 🤔
They should shut the place down. It's not a marae anymore. Bruce has gone, the building has gone. It's just a piece of prime real estate that presently operating as a camping site.
Aue, e whawhati ana taku manawa! Hei aha te 'traditional' marae. Me mahi mo te tangata! Koia te mea nui o te ao, na reira ko Tapu te Ranga tera e kawea ana. Thank you Halima and kids. Rest assured, the time we spent digging, cleaning, building, singing...it all planted the seed deeper into the soils of our hearts! E tika ana e Buddha...not a place to live, but a way to live. We got it brother.
Beautiful way of keeping culture alive, Lot of admiration for Bruces inspiration. RIP Bruce
I remember the fire like it was yesterday.. so sad 😔
My cat lived there wouldnt come back home with me.
Too many nice people there.
Figured he happy as.
Ginger tom Max was a savage mouser and lover of cuddles.
Never heard what came of all the cats when they were trying do the bird sanctuary. He was never into bird hunting when i had him. Was a long time back 2008.
Only was reminded of it the other day and was shocked to see the fort was razed.
Was the least racist most Maori cultural place I ever stopped into.
You wouldn't even know it was Marae unless you looked really hard. Seemed very cultural tolerant to any way of life not causing harm or fear. Hope it rebuilds its community and also hope it really was an accident.
Oh no
