As a Saudi, I can tell that football has always been the mainstream thing and nearly everyone watches it fans aren’t artificial as you said they didn’t start supporting a team suddenly the problem has always been attendance due to bad stadiums, bad scheduling and as Laporte said “traffic” plus it’s broadcasted for free that what created watching at home, coffee shop and other gathering places except stadiums but hopefully this will change with time and fans will start to attend games more often, the other problem is fans aren’t attached to their local teams and the majority support one of the big four clubs and for me, this is the biggest problem that clubs must overcome by engaging with local communities and create a positive fan culture
I’m an Ittihad fan and actually our attendance numbers dropped not because fans changed teams but because poor management by the club owners and board of directors
PL clubs are doing the same things with money but fine cause of european superiority!! This people are just racist and suffering from superiority complex..
The thing stopping Middle Eastern countries from developing their footballing culture is their reluctance to send said talent abroad. We've seen big talents in the past 15 years like Omar Abdulrahman from the UAE stifle his potential by staying in his local league (for the most part, he did move to the Saudi league for a bit if I'm not mistaken). I'm glad we're seeing a Saudi player joining Roma from Alhilal, I've heard good things about him even though I can't remember his name.
you havent talked about the clubs owned by big rich companies, like al qadsiyah owned by aramco, neom sc owned by neom project, al diriyah sc owned by diriyah project and etc
You can do same job as you were in Europe, for much much bigger wages and your in a league that comprises of 4 clubs that could float or sink at the bottom of the EPL with the rest a mix of championship and div 1 rated clubs , if you like or can handle the environment , culture , the very high temperatures in certain months . It also helps if your a Muslim or of north African descent. Any how the biggest carrot is the wages. Now when you leave Saudi to maybe return to top flight in Europe , it may be harder than when you went to middle east. Clubs will certainly not offer anywhere near the transfer price or the wages you received there.
