That was the early-mid sixties in Leamington, Ontario, just across the border. Thanks quinlann for the amazing post!!
My Man, sing that pain. We really needed to have you put that out there. So may times we hear "HER" side, her pain, but never what "WE" as men go through. We are not heartless, we do have feelings and they can be hurt. Thanks Marvin.
I am female & completely agree with you. Reading your comment makes me so ashamed of my impatience & behavior towards my husband sometimes. Life is difficult.
The emotion in this song gives it so much depth and the music to go along with the lyrics is just fantastic! Marvin did a marvelous job in this album. I first bought and heard this album back in 1984. As I was always a Marvin Gaye fan, I still didn’t know what I was gonna get. Just looking at the whole album, as it was very graphic with symbolisms from a Monopoly game board. On one side, it has themes of the beginnings of a marriage and happier times . On the other side, it depicts a story of pain and divorce. Extremely symbolic , it shows a husband who hands over a album and money to his ex wife and the divorce judgement amongst other things. After listening to the whole album, it made me think twice about getting married- so emotional. You actually feel Marvin’s pain.
Damn..went through a severe broken heart with this song back in 2004.....the brilliance of this song unfortunately brings those pains back momentarily.....time heals everything....thank God
"You don't have the right to use a son of mine to keep me in line. One thing I can't do without is the boy God gave to both of us. I'm so happy for the son of mine." I can relate!
WOW! Marvin Gaye! This man was blessed with a gift truly from God above. I'm thankful for him sharing his gift with us(fans). He definitely has a talent that can never be imitated. I never knew of the subject of him having to do this album & his personal life surrounding it. His gift to sing still amazes me to this day. Pure Classic Talent.
Embarrassed to say I never heard this till today and WOW I keep replaying it to make sure I dont miss out on each little piece. I'm mesmerized by it and will probably listen a couple more times before bed! Marvin was a musical genius
I remember going through my divorce when he released this album, and I listened to this album over and over for weeks, as the tears would roll down my face, because he was putting into words how I felt, and could not get it out. RIP Marvin
Huggy Bear My parents were going thru a bad divorce and I remember my mother bringing this home & playing it and I instantly fell in love!😍😍😍 I love the story and the explanation and to hear the ultimate breakdown of Marvin's and Anna's marriage.....DEEP
Marvin was indeed in pain when he made this album - it was court ordered, hence, Here My Dear - Anna Gordy requested it in their divorce settlement with all proceeds going to her. The 1st part of the song was his attempt at cynicism but the second part showed how much he remembered of the good times and how much he had loved her. Even when Marvin was bad - he was still good!
Yep, that's why it's called "Here, My Dear". I will never forget going to see one of my Aunts and her putting this album on. I remember saying something to the effect that she had the new Marvin Gaye album. Her only remark was, with a smile, "She asked for it and she got it", then laughing. As she played the album I understood what she meant- and went out and bought my copy that night. LOL.

And to think this was initially his most unpopular album. The world let Marvin down, but at the same time people were not ready for this sort of personal expression
Agreed. There will never be another "Marvin" but there are some "young'un's" who've loved him enough, to study his craft and the lesson-plans he left. The next generation will have their own "- - - - - - !" I have know idea who will snatch the mantle, and I might not live to see it. But, I see some contenders, right now. A true brown liquor sipping album. If you have ever been through something in a relationship this is your album.
