    I was told by my Grandma (who is 92) that my Great Grandma used to go around the garden and tap on all the stems to produce flowers, fruits or veggies. Four generations back gardening tips never go out of style.

    Spanking is also good for houseplants.It makes them stronger all around.A lot of us allow the suckers on the bottom to grow about nine inches long and then cut and root them.We plant them well covered at a shallow angle so they can grow lots of roots quickly.We get nice results from these cuttings.

    The apple juice is the reall deal. Just to prove it to myself, I actually didn't do it for a while and blossoms would linger or fall off. I started using the juice and it worked ;)

    awesome advice I'm starting my first garden as a adult my grand mother and mom use to grow tomatoes when I was a kid and but not to abundant success, but my grandma would show us pictures of her when she was a child with her grand mother standing next to some tomatoe bushes that I swear were 5' or larger grandma said that " when grandma grew her plants she grew and caned enough to feed her family and gave the rest to people who were in need" I guess I'm tryin to keep my family's traditions alive...

    So great to see your positive results from pulling suckers. It's even more important to do with potted plants to help keep growth under control. When first growing, it's easy to be thankful for any growth and let it be, but tomato plants can grow incredibly fast. Thanks to your advice I've been pruning the suckers and keeping my plants in control. A couple weeks ago the roots found the sub irrigation reservoir and the plants are growing like mad now!

    Last two years I have gotten great results when alot of the people I know didn't and I think the difference is,I bought a few bags of wild flower seed,and planted them around my veg. garden to attract pollinators and it works great.A $7. bag of either full sun flower seed,partial shade flower seed,or butterfly/hummingbird flower seed will do the trick.

    Whole apples create ethylene gas, and not methane gas. However, as a bee keeper,
    I suggest that spraying your blossoms with a sugar based product probably attracts more pollinators, such as honey bees. Thank god every day for the honey bee because 1/3 of our food is a direct result of their pollination.

    I have never spanked my tomato plants but do know the theory behind it. As with other plants I grow, when they are seedlings I do tapping. Gently tap the tops to strengthen the stems and help their roots to grow strong. So now I will spanking and tapping for a great harvest to come. Much Mahalo for your video.

    I learned years ago from an "old timer" how to increase your tomato production. He called it "thumping the tomato blossoms" with your finger. Some folks here in Georgia actually use an electric tooth brush to vibrate the blossoms. Since the tomato blossom is self pollinated and no insects required, the thumping or vibrating does the job better than the wind or occasional bee. My tomato plants will have anywhere from 40 to over 50 tomatoes on them at a time. Thumping is the way to go.

    I've enjoyed the comments made be many, and the Information you have shared is the type of Info that may seem odd to some but it is the difference in a successful garden and one that struggles. My great-grandmother was well known for her ability to do the odd sounding "remedy" or "little something extra" and the proof was always in the results. From having the most amazing gardens to saving livestock and also children (way back before the town Dr. Would make his annual rounds). I'm glad to know that some folks still have this type of info and more importantly take the time to share it online. Cheers, to you, Sir! Keep on sharing! There is a reason to continue with passing the knowledge along...and it is greatly appreciated!

    This actually works very well. When mine start to flower I don't wait for the bees. I go out with a q-tip and brush every single flower and you would not believe how many tomatoes I have. Right now I have anywhere from 10-15 on each plant. I tested two groups in different areas. The one group i used the q-tip and the other group i did not even touch them at all. The group I used the q-tip on has the 10-15 on each plant whereas the other group has 4-5 tomatoes on each. It works and works well.

    Here in the South we thump our tomato blossoms with our fore finger and thumb. Some folks use electric tooth brushes which vibrate the blossoms. This method will increase your per plant production three and four fold. I grow all heirloom, thump them all every day and each plant will have 40 to 60 tomatoes like yours. Nice video.

    I have also heard that plants that have a little bit of stress from windy conditions will develop more connective tissues in their stalks.Bigger and stronger stalks allow nutrients to move more freely and quickly from root to fruit. Your spanking them might mimic that stress and be the stimulus the plant needs to produce the bigger and stronger stalks.

    4' cages on the peppers. In early spring I only water about twice a week to encourage deep root development. They send out lots of roots, deep in search of the water. When the heat's on, I stick my finger in the soil and if it's losing moister, I give 'em a drink.

    Hello, once again , here it is 2017 . Thank the Lord my mother is still with me at 85 years old and yes she has me spanking plants.
    Just look at this video, it works. Up until last year we have never used raised beds. I did last tear just for my mother, so she does have to bend as much. spanking helps with getting what the plant needs from the roots. this helps on all plants. It's like a wake up call.
    All so when planting the tomatoes we start by digging down and laying the tomatoes plant down on its side. pull off some the suckers . By doing this covering more of the plant you'll get more roots and the plant will stand up on its own. And before putting the plant in the ground put a tablespoon of Epsom salt and stir it into the soil and then put the plant in the ground. I'm sorry if this is confusing. I hope you understand what I've try to say. but don't for get to spank the plant as it starting to grow.
    Just your few plants you'll be feeding the neighborhood with your tomato . I love taking the tomatoes off the vine and putting salt on them and eating them right there. good growing

    I bought them from a garden center last year and they were about a foot tall and had a few blooms on them.
    This year I started all from seed and they're growing even better. See my videos from earlier this year (2013) and you'll see the seedlings, my transplant method (red solo cups), & planting. I don't use miracle gro, though I'm not militant towards those that do, I use compost tea and a bit of organic vegetable fertilizer when transplanting and once they put on fruit. Thanks 4 watching

    That would be ethylene gas, not methane, that helps fruit set and ripening. You can toss a couple of bad apples :) under your tomatoes plants near the end of the season to get the last green ones to ripen. Ripe apples give off lots of ethylene gas.

    • @Tiki71
      @Tiki71  10 лет назад +5

  • @Tiki71
    @Tiki71  12 лет назад

    Yes you can. You can even put the apple juice in a hose end sprayer and spray everything (easier than a manual pump spray bottle). Just remember, the pollenation is a bit different on squash & cukes than tomatoes and peppers. Squash plant females flowers are on the end of what will be the squash, the male flowers are at the end of spindiley shoots. Insects will get pollen from the male and then take it to the female ovary inside it's flower. :)

    I always thought the whole point of peat pots was to leave them on to give the plants a much gentler transplant when the time comes. I'd never heard of removing them.

    • @kwodell8694
      @kwodell8694 10 лет назад

      I never remove them either. I think the problem he's thinking of is when you plant a transplant at the same soil level as it is in the peat pot. In that case you need to peel the top edge off the peat pot so none of it sticks above the soil because it will wick moisture and dry out the roots before they grow thru the peat pot. I always plant my tomatoes deep by taking off all leaves except the top 2 pairs and plant it with the entire stem under the soil. Roots will grow all along the stem and will make a much healthier plant.
