- Welcome to SUBURBIA! Do you find this cookie-cutter landscape aesthetically pleasing, or do you want to run as far away from it as you can? 😂😂😂 Ever since I was young I knew Homeowners Association run neighborhoods are NOT the place for me and I would never live somewhere like this, but I do understand why it appeals to so many people. There actually is a non-HOA neighborhood near my parents' house and I love to walk there and see the unique house designs, chickens, tractors, and assorted random crap in people's yards 😂 Maybe will vlog it next time, didn't have enough time on this trip!
Today's video is in Chinese because 1) I figure this topic is more appealing to my viewers on Chinese platforms and 2) it seemed weird vlogging my own neighborhood in English 😂 English videos will be back next week with my train vlog because... hey that was a very exotic experience, might as well have been another country LOL.

What do you guys think about today's vlog: do you find the rows of nearly-identical homes and grass lawns aesthetically pleasing, or is it not your cup of tea? 🏡Personally I prefer the non-HOA neighborhood down the road, where everyone's house looks different and yards are full of chickens, tractors, vegetable gardens, and other miscellaneous things. My parents say it's "chaotic and messy" and they'd never live in such a place. I say, if I paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for this house and yard I will do whatever the hell I want with it LOL! Perhaps this is a debate that will divide the American people for centuries to come, just like how fiercely divided we are over the presidential election... 😂
Today's video is in Chinese because I thought it would be weird vlogging in English in my hometown and also I figure this is a topic more of interest to viewers on Chinese media. Also, sorry to take so long to upload, I am back from the US already but have been ridiculously busy at work!! The 30 hour train vlog I mentioned at the end of the previous video is coming next week, stay tuned 🚂 And China vlogs will be back in mid November! 🐼

Seems to me a non-HOA neighborhood requires more tolerance and negotiation skills between ppl to make it work, which might be messy and higher-stress for some ppl. At least everyone can choose in which arrangement they want to live, and choosing one doesn't mean the other choice can affect your choice (unlike Presidential elections, if a majority elects chocolate ice cream, then no vanilla ice cream for anyone).

You see many ethnically Chinese and those from Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia who live and retired in suburban America in California, Texas, Washington state, Virginia, Florida, etc. I know of a Chinese who was a software developer who bought some acres of land in South Carolina because it was part of a mall that was closed down for some $380,000 in 2017. Every year he would get calls from real estate agents wanting to buy his plot of land for double but he never sold as he wanted to retire there. In like February 2023, he gets a call from a lawyer directly from the state of South Carolina who explained to him they were going to build state offices where he bought the land and offered to pay $3 million for what he paid $380k for just 5 years earlier. He declined.
But then in Ocober, the lawyer for the state of Southg Carolina explained to him about "EMINENT DOMAIN" and he had a choice...either come up with a price he is willing to sell, or the state government would proceed to legally take the property from. So, the lawyer told him to come up with a price. He said, $4 million he would sell at and they finally settled at $3.6 million.
I am so proud your parents raising a such a beautiful and kind person.

For those who haven't come across the abbreviation HOA, it stands for Homeowners Association. Neighbourhood Watch in the UK.

That is a suburb of Washington DC, one of the more affluent area in the who darn country, not some backwater rural area.

This video was strangely nostalgic, even though the area I grew up in is tiny compared to the DC suburbs a lot of my experience growing up and attending school was pretty similar to Katherine's.
