I would love to go to Defcon. It's so cool.... as a computer nerd since before the internet period... but spoiler, bring a burner phone, a BASIC install laptop with NOTHING AT ALL important on it- and NEVER connect to public wifi at the con. ;) And you basically had a PURE Defcon experience- everyone I've talked to that has been there describes it like you do. To be fair for linus not even ten seconds into the video they both realized that luke is running out of time and wanted to tell a story not discuss a topic like they usually do so Linus can't really add to the conversation, maybe he could've asked some questions but him respecting the audience and Luke's time not making him remember details about the story is the best course of action he could've take
Man, I was right next to the Goldbug challenge the whole time, sitting at the Red Team Village CTF. One of my buddies was one of the creators of Goldbug, too.
Digging this Luke segment. Linus is letting him live and I dig that too, he’s got kids and Luke has hobbies and Linus just lets him have his time. He knows Luke likes this but knows he’s trying to wan, but this is wan show ❤
Having been a few times it's wonderful Luke had such a good experience while it's also pretty funny how much awesome stuff at defcon isn't mentioned here. Hacker jeopardy is hilarious and chaotic every year for example.
The rare and elusive pineapple. Many people don't realize the dangers of such a benign sounding object. It would be interesting to see the sophistication of pineapples at Defcon.
This is like when I try to explain something new I just discovered and got super hyped for, to my friends who have never heard of it before, and aren't interested until they SEE it themselves, and can more accurately process the information... lmao..
So basically Luke encountered a real life gifted class work sheet in the wild. Advanced Math Team puzzle quest. Only with numerics difficulty set to LOW and realworld variables on MAX. Super jelly.

several years ago, probably the first year that defcon had a reprogrammable badge, i read an article about how the guy made the badge for that year. ever since ANYONE GOING TO DEFCON FIRST TIME MUST PREORDER it's a rite passage AFTER-ALL, you're spending how much to go? over $1,000 travel/hotel etc. SPLURGE the extra pittance for a unique memorial ....

This is what people don't understand about hacking. Changing your network's SSID to that of a commonly used public one is such an elegant yet non-sophisticated way of gaining entry. You don't even need to be particularly knowledgable, just creative to come up with that. Also, on the topic of different people making different things of the event, my main activity would definetly be trolling people in non-harmful ways, trying to get as many people on possible on the board of shame.

Luke pouring his heart out about achieving his childhood dream and Linus barely listening in the most disinterested borderline rude way is such a showcase of the difference in these two people. Poor Luke missed all the swag and panels... I guess he will just have to go again next year
The trick to defcon is to skip the panels. They'll be on youtube or defcon ftp later.
Go do CTF/lab stuff. Or talk to people.
Their badges have been very intricate for a long time as they are a large source of pride for attendees.
And they're encouraged to hack them and share whatever weird shit they've managed to do with them. Like there's always someone to run doom.
These types of segments from Luke are what I watch wan show for. Red teaming ai and this have been two of the best segments they have done.
