Bloody great stuff, from a bloke whos freely giving this knowlege for the love of it! Theres some gems in here.. apart from showing changes you can insert in the badic blues structure..like stating you can use a minor 7 or dom7 chord in the blues, interchangeably....gold dust. Many thanks for sharing this.
reliving my youth .. as a bassist I did pick up gigs with pianists who did the American songbook and I was totally green - could not sight read, had no 'fake book- but the best pianists would tell me "1-6-2-5" and it was like jelly. this is AWESOME :)
for the guy who asked someone to explain 2-5 every key is #ed 1234567. In this video he's playing in F so F[1] G[2] A [3] Bflat [4] C [5] D [6] E[7] . Therefore 2-5 is G-C back to F[1]. To the ear G wants to go to C and C wants to go to F [called circle of 5ths , G is the 5th note of C, C is the 5th of F.] This movement by 5ths sounds good or give resolution and pleasant harmonic motion. 2-5-1's are a building block of Jazz. If you sing just the phrase "i got you under my skin" or 'i get a kick out of you" these are 251s
Could someone talk about his left hand voicings from 6:15 on? I've been trying to understand these for a long time. All I know is they often involve stacked 4ths, sometimes with a tritone on the bottom or top. Any help would be great.
QUARTAL VOICING "maj" chords: 3 6 9 5 1 4 or 7 3 6 9 5 1 ( ex. Cmaj: e a d g c f o r b e a d g c) "7th" chords: 3 b7 9 5 1 4 or b7 3 6 9 5 1 "min" chords: 1 4 7 3 5 these chords are played with both hands. If you wish to play only with left hand then play only the bottom three notes (ex. Cmaj7 you could play just "e a d" or "b e a" 3 6 9 or 7 3 6)
I've been studying with my new teacher doing the Real book and all the keys and their chords, and I get the numbering system. Are you just breaking up those chords to get the a nice sound?
Great tutorial!!! very good, you Gave me Cool advices; Thanks. Nice greetings from your Fan from Austria. You know? :) I'm jacob. Nice greetings to New york.......... (-:
PianoUniverse , Have you figured it out yet? I think he's doing this, but I never got any music lessons, so I'm not sure. F B# C7 B#7 F(7) = F A C E# ==> C E# A alternate with C E Ab B# (7) = B# D F G# ==> F G# D Alternate with F G Db So I think he doesn't plays the 7 chords in his right hand, but not the root of the chords and alternates with the other thingy (haven't got a clue what it's called). Am I right or wrong?
Jolly good >> I'm a Mike Wolff too, but I WISH I learned piano>> I love the blus>> look on you tube plumbfitter2007 for some of my god, ok, or just..You really didn't practice that>> posts > God Bless

I love the part around 4:58 where he says, "cool, huh?" I'm like, yeah, that's really flippin' cool.
that progression is from "blues for alice"
There was a little something for everyone in here and it didn't ramp up too quickly. :) Thanks for imparting your wisdom!

Alternate with F G Db
