Oliver obviously resented Alex for his performance in Ishval, but it wasn't because he refused to do his duty as a soldier, it was because he was indecisive and Didn't actively oppose the war, merely allowing himself to be banished from the battlefield. The whole point of this fight was to show that Alex is too soft and emotional, and didn't want to hurt Olivier, a flaw that she can easily take advantage of. That's why Alex doesn't use alchemy against her. That's why he lost, despite being on par with Scar, and being able to take hits from Sloth.
Alex and the general Armstrong family are kind and compassionate. There is no way he would use alchemy against his non user sister, the fight was hands on and can be likened to siblings wrestling. Mind you Alex didnt get a cut over the fight, Olivier would have easily cut him in small pieces. They both held back.

Well he didn't back up becoz Alex would lose. They pack up becoz there won't be any house once they start fighting. But still I think their father is not that dump headed. Olivia and Alex are already wealthy enough without inheriting any of Armstrong property becoz they both are high ranking officials and Olivia is a general. She has her own base that she calls home. He definitely have no reason of taking Armstrong assets unless there is something big happening due to which they have to go all out. In that case it's safe for them to go out of the country as something bad won't happen to them.
This scene was handled a bit odd. We see that Alex is much stronger later in the series since he can hold off Sloth (while his sister is no match for him physically). So I suppose Alex was too soft and holding back in this scene, but it still would have been more fun to show them going back and forth for a bit in the fight. That way the general could have gotten a bit humbled after calling her brother weak all the time. She should still win in the end since she is so brutal and Alex clearly does not want to hurt her, but I feel the fighter was too one-sided.
I think the anime producer didn't want to focus on the oliver/alex relationship but more on why Oliver was doing what she was doing. And maybe the fact that Alex was getting thrown around was just there for comic relief in a moment where the situation outside is dire. And later in the fight against Sloth she will acknowledge his strength.
@Langdon Alger Except this scene is a major story point. It decides who will head the family and also makes the fight later on confusing since it contradicts this one. While Saitama fighting the fly obviously is not a huge plot point. Even that scene does serve a purpose, though. It foreshadows why Saitama is legitimately scared to see so many mosquitos flying in the air later in the episode. It's not just a one-off joke.
TrueUnderDawgGaming uhhhh speak for yourself buddy, literally nobody thought the rest of the fights were confusing. It’s just you. This scene was definitely there as a joke and the fact that who heads the family was always going to be her cuz Olivier has much more superior leadership skills
I always kinda figured that Alex wasn't taking the fight as seriously, because as you said, he's soft and didn't want to actually hurt his sister. If he was going all in and using his alchemy, the fight would have been much more even.
@@davisbowe8668 within the viewpoint of what was going on, she is also intentionally trying to cause damage to house to allow it to be "renovated" and alex may or may not be in on this

ultimaT His name is Chris Sabot for Christ sake. Yes, he's vegeta, piccolo, shenron, perunga, Kami and old piccolo. He's the director of the English dub studio as well.
Olivier and Alex have been like this since they could crawl, and their generation of Armstrongs all seem to have genuine non-alchemy-related superpowers (even Katherine, the young girl in this clip, can lift and throw a piano with little effort). Safe to say that this is probably more common than one would hope.

Out of all the Armstrong family, with the final daughter being an exception, Alex is the most soft hearted. It has been proven from the ishval war, he refused to participate anymore in the mass genocide , and retired from the war. Hence, he is unable to be the head of the family. The head of the family must be firm and decisive
Can't believe this has any likes at all. Being a soldier is not about blindly following orders to commit war crimes. Alex preserved his honor and dignity by refusing to partake in such vile acts.
@Art Basement thats frankly not true, in the real world you're lectured endlessly about what orders are and are not legal and taught that if you follow an illegal order you will face full responsibility for it as it is your duty when a superior gives an illegal order to refuse to follow. Dunno if the applies to FMA though.
@Art Basement just because that's what can happen does not mean that's whats meant to happen there is no lesson in basic training where you get sat down and taught how to violate military law
First time watching this scene I thought it was a power play by the sister. Then later realized it was just a ruse to get the family to leave the country (to safety) without tipping off the bad guys. Best part was the whole family just accepting the fight, and carrying on without concern as if those two fight like bulls all the time (apparently they do).
Major General Olivier Mira Armstrong: Tough, fearless, badass, powerful, no-nonsense, relentless, ambitious, and one of the greatest tacticians and leaders of Amestris. Edit: Another note, did anyone else find 2:06 kinda cute? XD "no take backs" definitely reminds me of siblings quarreling. It's scenes like this that makes me love Olivier as a character. She's able to send her family away and create a cover to conceal the Briggs forces all while not seeming suspicious in the least. She's brilliant.
He was faking it though. Somewhat. Remember, SHE is asking for her father's resignation so that he remains out of harm's way. Also so that they stay out of the Coup so as not to be proclaimed traitors. He was probably actually grateful for that cheerful family reunion.

Olivier after the fight: and now to both apologize to the maids tell them my men will clean up as they will be wrecking the house even more for our HQ...I really hope Helga isn't in to-- Helga: OLIVIER!!!! Olivier: aww crap....
Rewatching this, I suddenly wonder if speaking to her father in this particular way was completely intentional to rile Alex up enough to fight her when he hears the news - as the first thing their father says is to engage her combat to be the next successor. She's smart, and baited her brother so hard and the other family members seemed very oblivious to her level of manipulation.

He probably just didn’t want to fight her himself but also not surrender directly.
It is a tradition passed onto the Armstrong family for generations
now behold these sparkles passed down the Armstrong family for generations
Shawn Lu Olivier doesn't sparkle
MemeLord 2000 actually she did in the manga
@@Tony-oh really?
@@anilax9158 Yes, in the manga she only sparks in that scene, just 1 spark in all the manga
@@davisbowe8668 within the viewpoint of what was going on, she is also intentionally trying to cause damage to house to allow it to be "renovated" and alex may or may not be in on this
0:27 She calls Alex a jellyfish, a creature that is fairly weak but surprisingly dangerous. Since Olivier publicly calls her brother weak, but privately cares for him and believes in his strength, that might've been a disguised compliment.
how do they talk without opening their mouths and only wiggling their mustaches?
+samthor
Simple. The power of anime is what allows them to do this. :)
+Damien Devrieze That and bishie sparkles.
You do not underestimate the Armstrong's grace and might
They're manly powerful people with great facial hair. This is how all family's like this are like, magic included
Why talk with a mouth when you have a pretty awesome mustache.
Olivier scares me. It's one thing to beat up on Edward Elric, but throwing Major Armstrong around like a rag doll? Fuck me...
+wilji1090 Forget that she can call Edward SMALL and he gets scared.
You know the one Major was holding back, right? This guy could go head to head with Scar.
She's scary... But not as scary as Izumi
+Austin Boylan oh no contest on that, Izumi is what fear is afraid of.
+Fenrir The world eater I'm sure they get along nicely.
How Armstrongs bond.
Yes, this is how they bond. It's a method passed down the Armstrong line for generations.
AltoRoark99 So is the Armstrong signature asswhooping.
And the Armstrong Muscle-Offs
100th like for the 3rd time of today
Olivier is one of the best characters in this series. She may not be an alchemist, but that's one of the most impressive things about her. She's damn scary and I love her for it!
She can go toe to toe with any of the alchemists in the army and I bet she'd kick their asses left right and center.
“It seems Alex has cleared away the old fountain , most fitting place for our new statues I’d say”
2:03 "NOOOOO!! ENOUGH!!"
Sounds like Alexander is having a GREAT time.
NO TAKEBACKS ALEX!
Alexander the Great?
Well it can be seen as a Brother sister bonding moment considering they're pretty distant

1:38 I Lmao when she said "GET OVER HERE!" 🤣🤣🤣
Mortal Combat reference ❤ 🔥 🪝
It's the OH NO for me .😂
In the manga we learned that Catherine is strong enough to lift a grand piano with one hand, I would love to see her training with her older siblings
I think in the episode where Yoki was explaining his thieving days he tried robbing the armstrongs and she lobbed said piano at him. 😂
"Your bloated muscles are worthless without a spine."
FUCKING. SAVAGE.
"NO TAKE BACKS ALEX!" OMG that is so what brothers and sisters would say if they where in a fight! LOL
Nah, more like "You'll going back into mom's womb" then proceed to lay hay-makers to each other's face
What's funny is that Olivier and Alex are fighting and their family is acting like nothing is wrong.
I think that's how the Armstrong's settle arguments
I love how the family is not phased over the fight. Like a chair nearly hits them and they have no reaction 😂
Olivier and Alex have been like this since they could crawl, and their generation of Armstrongs all seem to have genuine non-alchemy-related superpowers (even Katherine, the young girl in this clip, can lift and throw a piano with little effort). Safe to say that this is probably more common than one would hope.
''Father, I demand you retire''
What a conversation starter.
Might used it in near future and go blazing guns on my siblings.
1:36 chair flies by heads with no reaction
+William Longstaff i think they're use to it
Such strong will and resolve in the face of flying furniture has been passed down the Armstrong line for generations!!!!
This probably happens very often. Lol
2:26 And here, we have zero fucks given about Alex being casually thrown into the fountain.
According to the timestap, it's almost as if it never happened. Incredible senses.
This scene has made me paranoid of my sister ever since I saw it.
This reminded me of my childhood
Statues, large and solid statues.
Like how she casually emptied the vault 😂 as everything was being destroyed
Olivier right on point when she says "your bloathed muscles are worthless without a spine"
I don't care how serious he sounded alex has always been to kind hearted even during the ishval civil war
Jerrell hamilton Word lol
He's too kind to be a soldier.

I would certain try . o course I would have to fight the bear with a Mohawk first.
0:47 makes me cry actual tears of laughter every time... "OHHHHHHHH~"
Love how their father doesn't even greet Alex, but demands he engage his sister in battle.
Love how casual the whole thing is.
Then again, it makes sense since all this skill has been PASSED DOWN THE ARMSTRONG LINE FOR GENERATIONS! (sparkle)
Something that I love about this franchise. they understand how sibling dynamics actually work.
@@ML-dt2xe it is true, the way you view the army is the naive wrong one.
Hmm sounds like he was pretty FIRM and DECISIVE when he chose to stop commiting genocide
@Art Basement just because that's what can happen does not mean that's whats meant to happen there is no lesson in basic training where you get sat down and taught how to violate military law
Fucking love the Armstrongs
"The Armstrongs"........I would watch the hell outta that sitcom
I would settle with that becoming a mini manga series because that idea is just yes!
Salocinist Yeah, screw Game of Thrones! Give this family a sitcom!
Gabrielle Jarmin wowowow, let's not get out of hand
Ser Bacon LOL. Yeah guess not with season 5 coming up. But, still: Armstrongs.
The grunts and crying in the background , this is true sibling love.
Olivier: Behold, Alex... it's the asskicking technique that's been passed through the Armstrong family for generations.
I always loved how the person who can actually throw Major Armstrong around is his own sister.
Major General Olivier Mira Armstrong: Tough, fearless, badass, powerful, no-nonsense, relentless, ambitious, and one of the greatest tacticians and leaders of Amestris. Words cannot describe how much I love this woman :')
On another note, can we please have a spin off series revolving around the Armstrong family? I need this. Like really badly.
Edit: Another note, did anyone else find 2:06 kinda cute? XD "no take backs" definitely reminds me of siblings quarreling. Except this one involves mass destruction...and potentially fatal interactions ._.
This entire family is insane and I love them.
It's scenes like this that makes me love Olivier as a character. She's able to send her family away and create a cover to conceal the Briggs forces all while not seeming suspicious in the least. She's brilliant.
So Is Fabolusness a genetical trait in this family?
passed down the Armstrong line for generations XD
The Wraith Zone Velvet Gaming Room what does that means?
he does say it was passed down in the family for generations
in the earlier episodes lol
NANOMUSCLES SON
2:29 OMG! The Major has a mouth! I always thought it was just a mustache! My mind has been blown!
Same
He was faking it though. Somewhat.
Remember, SHE is asking for her father's resignation so that he remains out of harm's way. Also so that they stay out of the Coup so as not to be proclaimed traitors.
He was probably actually grateful for that cheerful family reunion.
I always laugh when she says "No take backs Alex!!"
I think I represent the whole fandom when I say, I want her to step on me.

Sibling rivalry at its best.
2:33 I couldn't stop laughing cause all I could think of was that time when Sandy beat up Patrick at Squidward's band rehearsal.
Isn’t that the time she shoved his head through a trombone’s tubes?
While the 2 siblings are fighting for the house the rest of the family is like. "Welp Might as well dip!"
I love this family.
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. One of the only animes that has well written, badass female characters that arent oversexualized. Its why its my favorite
Even the literal sin of Lust is balanced and represented well.

ummm yes?
The maid's thoughts: "Ugh, not today!"
They're scarier than the ARMSTRONGS!!! Imagine dealing with these two at a young age! Especially Olivier...to demand respect from her would require the same exact temperament as Izumi!
Olivier: we are strong and I demand your respect! *goes to punch the maid*
Maid: WHAT WAS THAT YOU BRAT!? *Bodies her* Respect, you can't even dress yourself properly!!!
Alex: ….DEAR GOD!!
Olivier after the fight: and now to both apologize to the maids tell them my men will clean up as they will be wrecking the house even more for our HQ...I really hope Helga isn't in to--
Helga: OLIVIER!!!!
Olivier: aww crap....
Alex! Perfect timing!
Engage your sister in combat :v

Moments like this make me wanna rewatch the whole anime
The act of sibling rivalry has been in the Armstrong line FOR GENERATIONS!!!

Alexander Jones notice how he didn't have a single cut from her sword. if she was fighting for real she would uave cut him to pieces.

How exactly the better fighter?
She is a better leader and has a sharp tongue.
I just love how everyone else is just casually walking around bother the fight is going on as if this happens every single day
The voice acting is phenomenal here
Rewatching this, I suddenly wonder if speaking to her father in this particular way was completely intentional to rile Alex up enough to fight her when he hears the news - as the first thing their father says is to engage her combat to be the next successor. She's smart, and baited her brother so hard and the other family members seemed very oblivious to her level of manipulation.
I love hiw their family is just casually walks away as their detroying the house in combat
LOL! That's one disfunctional family. XD
You call this family dysfunctional? Ha! Have you ever played the Tekken series before?
Yes haha, can't wait for Jin to have a son xD
Aurora Griffin
Compared to the Great Houses of Westeros, this ain't nothing...
Aurora Griffin nah. They're just fighting to be the head of the house. Not like they're trying to kill each other
Nah this i healthy sibling rivalry
No alchemy, no muscle...just a sword, her authority, and a presence that could freeze flames (not Mustang’s though)
Olivia is a scary, awesome character 💯
And is Olivier. Not Olivia.
Olivia the walking definition of 'Get your ass back here, i aint done with you yet'
I get that she would win because he's too soft and she's pretty damned skilled, but how the fuck can she easily throw him around like that?
Them Armstrong family genes.
supernatural strength is an Armstrong family trait. The youngest sister, Catherine, can lift a dang GRAN PIANO like it's nothing. Poor Havoc, lol :-)
This method of casually throwing your siblings through walls has been passed down the Armstrong line for generations!
Sean Pepin you win
PLOT. No other way she would win a powerful alchemist.
"Family is love" they said; "they are always for you" they said
DeathNeku All lies.
Olivier subtly sending the family somewhere safe before shit starts going down.
I can imagine that Olivier would never lay a finger on Catherine despite constantly beating the crap out of Alex.
The most powerful family members isn't General or Major. It's the younger sister and the mother who can teleport in a blink of an eye.
