Something like 5-6 years ago I bought one of these. It crashed a lot, but lived through learning by failing. Now I enjoy flying ducted fan jets, scale warbirds, 3D stunt planes, etc. It's a great place to start. I now have 3 classic champs that I'll lend out to friends that want to try. Subbed for the love of the champ.
I think you just sold me on this plane! I have some knowledge about planes and flying, but have never actually flown one myself. I want and was looking at the Sport Cub S as a first plane. But after thinking about it a lot, I think it would be much better for me to start on the Champ instead.
Oh man it's good to see some of these older videos. I have owned 4 different Champs throughout my involvement in the RC hobby. Two were destroyed both learning to fly and doing other stupid stuff (combat, midairs, etc), one I bought beat up from a friend that I used for parts, and the fourth I also got from another friend that I fixed up and I still fly today. They are fun little airplanes, and really tough for their size! Kinda sad that Hobbyzone decided to stop making them.
This was the first real RC plane I ever bought, and the first Flite Test video I ever watched! So one heck of a double whammy thta led to where I enjoy the hobby today.
You guys blew the best part of the whole contest. After Josh Scott crashed his Champ on the other side of the tramp, somebody needed to pick th3e thing up and demonstrate that it wasn't hurt! After all, that's the reason the Champ snagged the #1 learn-to-fly position away from the Hobby Zone Super Cub, also sold by Horizon Hobby. Congrats on the new sponsorship!
There is no joke... Did you charge the battery before flying it? Did you charge it too long? The small batteries are sensitive and can be damaged by over-charing. It only takes about 10-15 minutes to charge the battery... if you leave it on the charger overnight it can start to ruin it. This is a great little plane that many people have been very happy with. I'm surprised by your experience... it's usually hard to find any bad reviews on this plane. -Chad
Great episode. The Champ is by far the best plane to learn on. I've bought 7 of these for my sons and friends. My nine and ten year old kids love flying with them and both can fly rings around me now!
Jeez, this airplane (and video) takes me back. I stuck some Dubro 3" fatty's on the landing gear and added an 808 with a pretty crude FPV setup. To this day, has to be one of the cheapest, yet most satisfying FPV setups. Love landing it on some dirt roads with those tires, too. Fair review, gotta' love these old FlightTest vids!
I love it! I done everything from ramming it into the ground to clipping a tree after dropping from 150 ft and nothing has happened to it. I have done a paint job and put metal tape on the wing tips. The paint job for looks and the metal tape to help with visibility and tip scraps. The only other thing I would do to it is switch the motor out for a brushless to help fly in stronger winds.
wanna say thank u ..i fly horizon planes an love them..my radian xl got stole hope one day ill have another one...u guys r great an big help i fly by myself an i can allways turn to u guys when i cant slove a issue...thank u
Got one of these a year and a half ago. It was in the middle of winter and I tried flying it on cold windy day... bad idea. Wind took it, and smashed it to pieces into a tree. My wife's cousin is into the hobby and was telling me about his planes, I said well I have the Champ, crashed it to pieces on the first flight and it sat in the box ever since. My wife's cousin got me to thinking about it again, so I decided I would repair it. Last week I put it back together with hot glue and packing tape, crashed a bit on my first flights, but after making some adjustments to my repair job I've been flying every chance I get on calm days and have zero crashes since. I've even managed to do some pretty nice loops. I have some videos it on my channel. Been watching loads of Flite Test videos the last few days, think I've been bitten by the bug lol.
David Hammond This tiny light plane actually handles the wind quite well. You may need to fly downward at full throttle to get enough speed. However it's a bit unstable and difficult to fly at high speeds, and if you get downwind, you'll be trying to fly back to upwind in the most difficult orientation. Therefor I would definitely recommend a beginner to fly with no wind until they're comfortable flying at high speeds directly toward yourself without getting disoriented.
This is one of the best beginner planes I ever had, I crashed that thing so much. But it only broke like twice, but there's spare parts for everything. I used to do touch and goes on tables three feet wide. Horizon has great products
my brother has one of these he use to fly all the time, I think he rebuilt the tail with thin cardboard from a cereal box and some tape when it broke in some crashes, looked like he was having a lot of fun flying it so I started looking around RUclips at reviews for planes and stumbled upon FliteTest, it was early spring and we decided to get ourselves and dad started for fathers day.. that was a little better than two years ago now and man am I glad my brother got that first little Champ flying =D
BTW, I have a BIXLER on the way from HK! Can't wait to try it out. I have 2 Champs and also the Super Cub LP. These are GREAT PLANES for beginners. Congrats on the new sponsorship...Horizon? Wow. You dudes are becoming stars right before our eyes!
I love all your videos! I have recently started rc flying with a Champ myself. Question: often the motor won’t restart after even a short flight. It behaves as though it is low voltage-just blips and quits. But I have found that if I unplug and replug the flight battery, it will sometimes start up and happily run for 5-6 minutes until the battery is truly depleted. Is this normal? Is there any other way of dealing with this problem?
Champ was my first airplane ever. That poor thing took so many beatings, and now it cant fly anymore, but it still sits on top of a cabinet as a reminder of how inspired I was when I first started. Really helps every time i crash now.
This plane was my first RC Plane, i have it for about 2 years and i am still loving it, it dont brake easy, flies slowly and perfect! The best airplane to start and even for experts, a Relaxing flying garanteed!!!!!!!!! Luiz from Brazil!
Sweet! Great 1st HH sponsored vid. I was cheering for Josh, but Josh won...... Looks like a great plane for a beginner. Keep the awesome vids coming Flitetest, and no slapping David!
I haven't seen any bad reviews either, so you can imagine my surprise and disappointment. I charged the battery until the charger blinked with 20 second intervals, as the manual says. First time was only a 15 minute recharge, second was closer to 30 which also makes sense since they ship the batteries precharged. I have mailed the store where it was bought in the hopes of getting a new battery. Thanks for responding Chad, I am a great fan of you show so keep up the good work =)
I got one of these years ago. Now Feb 2020 and have opportunity to fly indoors. I want to make it fly slower so I added some wing area using thin foam food plates. Extended the span 4 in each side and added some surface like large strakes behind the wing attached to the TE and fuse. Wow it really flies great. Just what I wanted. Also building a FT Old Speedster for flying Feb 15.
I'm so excited horizon Hobbys sponsoring you all. Iit would be really awesome if you reviewed: the blade mcpx, the beast 3d UMX, hyper taxi, UMX geebee, msr x,
Cool! I've been looking forward to this new sponsor for ages and this video impressed me! Are you going to be using many Parkzone planes or just E-flite/Hobbyzone? Nice guys, Tom
I just bought one of these today, it is my first RC plane. I can't wait till tomorrow to break it out and fly it. I have controlled a plane similar to this on an app called Electric RC, but is there any tips or tricks associated with this plane?
After very bad experiences in the past with RC planes and gliders I decided to try the champ... It is hands down the best plane I have ever gotten. It was so easy that on my first charge I used normal rates and flew loops and even a few seconds of inverted (if you go inverted START HIGH UP). If you want a: cheap, cool, fun, easy, first plane GET THE CHAMP
I just discovered you can fly the HobbyZone Champ at night. It has lights in the nose and belly that give this haze orange glow. I kept it low and within 30 feet of me and had a blast.
Took a mistake on flying in slight wind. Nothing too terrible but worrisome nonetheless, plane started to climb and go away from me. Big gust of wind came and took off with my plane. Lost control and couldn't get a signal so I had to run far to catch up to it. For the price and stability of the plane, it's a great choice for beginners. Glad I listened to you guys and others about not getting a plane with aluerons(i know I'm misspelling it) for a first time flight. Next step is the sport cub mini to learn 4ch. Thanks for the help guys.
Another great trainer is the Cox extra 300 or the Cox Cessna 182. I got one two years ago and now I own and have flown many times an f16 edf jet 70mm that goes over 100 and a cap 232 62in wingspan with an os fs 120 4 stroke nitro engine. I'm only 15 btw
I love you guys. Y'all are so funny and professional. I have learned a lot from all y'all. Thank You for taking time out to make these instruction video's and also to show some of the latest plane.Josh and Josh...God Bless The both Of Y'all.....Joe Connick
Awesome plane, I learned to fly on this plane! Had a couple planes before but this was the first one I could actually have fun flying! Very good trainer, nice video guys!
This was my first plane and I tell you, I did learn a lot and for the 2014 season I will be up grading to the Apprentice s15 e to take it to the next level.
Hey can anyone answer me this- ok so I just looked up the bixler, and I've been researching the champ for a few days. I'm a fairly experienced flyer (no gas powered ones tho) and I have a medium sized field near our house. I'm just looking for something that will be fun and easy- nothing too fast or anything- and may be able to do a loop or two. Which choice should I go with? Loved the video btw!
The challenge was fun to watch and all, but you guys really should have included more info on the Champ before beginning the competition. Lotsa Newbs could've benefitted by knowing that the Champ can land all on its own by going "hands off - throttle down" thanks to its dihedral and also could have shown the easy way to activate the "training mode" on the stock tx (press the right stick straight down until it beeps and the LED flashes. This is the equivalent of using D/R and expo. Great job tho!
can i bind the HobbyZone Champ to my own transmitter? i have a 6 chnnel transmitter with DSM2........sorry if this is dumb question but i am new to all this. Thanks Adam
I'm a huge noob to RC planes, I have the champ and I fly it very rarely (due to it bring very windy and alot of trees). I've flown it about 5 times and have crashed it, only a little paint comes off. :3
nice I have owned bout 2 of these and each one has survived over 100 crashes. my son and I put it through it's paces. love this plane with a 500mah battery it flies forever.
When I hand launch the champ, right away it goes into a dive mode and then I have pick her up inches from the ground.. any idea how to fix this? I see you have a very smooth take off?
I have one of these with all accessories. But I never flew it. Cracked the tail and wheel came apart. How much can u sell them for with damage? From UK
I got the champ as my very first plane. The champ is very easy to fly as a first plane. It is simpler than the bixler by having only rudder and elevator. I personally love the champ because if you ever get into any kind of trouble you can just throttle all the way back and the plane will glide very nicely. I was flying it one day about 200 ft high and i lost the radio signal and the throttle cut out and it became a glider. I flew about 700 ft down wind with absolutely no damage at all.
I’m looking to buy a beginners plane for my 6 yr old son. He gets off the bus EVERYDAY with a paper airplane he’s made. He gets home and makes paper airplanes. I want to see if this is something he would get into. Any recommendations for a plane I know is going to be able to hold up to his learning curve?
I have a challenge for you guys. One that I am doing myself. I want you guys to take an Air Hogs Hawk Eye Blue Sky, and turn it from a motor-differential steering setup to a fully-funtional RC plane with Ailrons, Elevators and rudders. Also, it should be able to keep it's on-board camera functions. If you guys want to do this, keep in touch if possible. Or if you want to. I think it would be a fun project to try with such a small plane.
Hobbyzone makes good stuff, I owned one of the original Aerobird Challegers and it was one of the best planes I've ever owned. Sadly it has crashed, but it was my first plane and I still love it. :)
I have a champ and I flew all last summer, then I put it away for the winner, then when I went to fly it this spring and I tried charging the battery, then I got a new battery and I still can't get it to work. Should I get a new battery or should I try to get a new charger? Thanks in advance.
I've had mine since they came out. gone through 2 sets of wings and 1 full body. but the electronics have held together great. I replaced the prop with a 3 blade prop and put tiny lights on it for night flying. right now there is something wrong with it, it doesn't fly right. it will oscillate back and forth a bit and then stall after leaving the ground. i think maybe the thrust vector is off a little bit. great trainer though. I'm flying 450 class helis now.
I wanted to test this thing to see how much payload it could carry, so I put my Mobius ActionCam on it. Believe it or not, it worked! I had to fly full throttle the whole time, and it wouldn't have worked if there was the least bit of wind, but it flew and got some pretty cool video! This is a great plane and I would recommend it to anyone and everyone looking for a first plane, or just a fun plane in general.
I bought the Duet and some extra batteries a few days ago. On my 3rd battery I started to get overconfident. I did a couple of loops, but on my "last" loop, the up is down and down is up got me. I did a full power nose dive into the dirt. The left wing ripped off :( The hobby shop I got it at sold me some foam safe superglue. After 30 minutes I was back in the air.
How does this compare to the ares Taylorcraft 130. I'm thinking of starting in the hobby and wondering which one would be more suitable, keeping in mind I have roughish surfaces where I live, and perfectly still days do not come around very often.
If u sure that u will be in the hobby for a hvile, u can do like me. I brought a DX6 and a glider with motor(Radian Pro), i would recomend it, because its a slow flyer, and u get 60-120 min on a battery. (2200mah)
+Ole Andreas Sorry but I don't agree with you. If you crash the Champ it is cheaper to repair than the Radian. For the first plane the Champ is better.
i had one of these, first day i flew it it was a little to windy and the thing on full throttle didnt have enough power to fight the wind, tried to bring it down but it was blown out of sight and i never found it lol... oh well if i ever get another one ill be upgrading the motor..
I have 2 Champs, only because the first one got stuck in a tree and I had to buy a new one. Finally got the first one down from the tree almost a month later - after rain storms and the sun - battery was shot but the champ flew once again! These are durable, easy flyers...it would be a mistake not to have one in your collection. Highly Recommended!!!!!
When I flew my rc champ it was so fun since I am a beginner but sadly since it was my first go I crashed it a couple of times and my rudder got smashed to pieces,if you want to know I stalled it and it fell
These planes fly awesome. I love my flights. So steady and easy to control. Half throttle cruses forever. Dead calm evenings are the best results. Had a problem at the start with loss of control and the plane would fall........bound it easy with my spectrum DX5e and presto......problem solved there. Transmitter may be faulty. ?? I have 3 batteries for the plane and can fly near an hour.
Get some altitude and then pitch down a little to get some speed, not a lot but enough to pick up momentum, this will give u about 2 mph more speed. If it stalls a lot try killing the throttle just before you pull back so it doesnt want to just climb. Once it gets past vertical it should just fall back and complete the loop. I do loops with the champ all day, completely stock setup. Also helps to have fully charged battery and no wind
flite test I love your videos and you helped my get into the hobby I now fly at a club every tuesday and I am building a profile F 22 just like the one you guys built. PLEASE REPLY!!!!!!
Fun little airplane. A shame you can't get one for less without that cheap 4ch transmitter that they all come with. Sell them for $55 BNF instead of $89 for RTF only, and I'll buy several and fly them with my DX5e TX. I don't want to have to keep paying for useless transmitters.

That’s really cool that you have 3 and just let people use them to help get them into rc flying!
Both of you are always great on camera.
I love it! I done everything from ramming it into the ground to clipping a tree after dropping from 150 ft and nothing has happened to it. I have done a paint job and put metal tape on the wing tips. The paint job for looks and the metal tape to help with visibility and tip scraps. The only other thing I would do to it is switch the motor out for a brushless to help fly in stronger winds.
wanna say thank u ..i fly horizon planes an love them..my radian xl got stole hope one day ill have another one...u guys r great an big help i fly by myself an i can allways turn to u guys when i cant slove a issue...thank u

yeah your going to need a bigger plane for weight in high winds

Congratulations! Thanks for the input! is it easy to find the electronics? esc and batteries? What would be the pros and cons? the esc is durable?
I like the floating names around the planes!
Well done Bixler, you made it look easy and I bet it wasn't. Looks great to learn on. Will look for it in the UK.
Sweet! Great 1st HH sponsored vid. I was cheering for Josh, but Josh won......
Looks like a great plane for a beginner. Keep the awesome vids coming Flitetest, and no slapping David!
Just bought this plane for my nephew as his first RC planeand we're enjoying learning about it. Thank you for the video!
I haven't seen any bad reviews either, so you can imagine my surprise and disappointment. I charged the battery until the charger blinked with 20 second intervals, as the manual says. Awesome video guys and Josh Scott I thought you might had a chance....but you flew well !! Keep up the great work guys
Always fun to watch these two - great rapport.
The way you guys "leveled the playing field" was great. Too Funny! LoL Keep up the great videos!
I got one of these years ago. Now Feb 2020 and have opportunity to fly indoors. I want to make it fly slower so I added some wing area using thin foam food plates. Thanks guys new to RC but loving it

Arno Victor Dorian don’t fly in wind
Hey fellas quick question just got my son the champ I also bought 3 extra batteries are the new batteries fully charged when u buy them thanks a lot.
just picked one of these up few days ago and just flew it today. i have never flown a rc plane before but i had a blast i would highly recommend it.

Great, fun, entertaining video. Well done to all concerned. Enjoyed watching that. Nice production values too.
i got the park zone albatross and wondered if the controler from the champ would work. THANKS!!!!

a friend was gonna buy one but he saw no link to the champ in your description on your video.
Just got this plane. Totally recommend to a beginner because if you ever lose control, it will just glide safely back down with your throttle off
Cool, I was looking to get one but I didn't, is it easy to fly?
Very easy to fly. However since it's small, I do not recommend flying in moderate wind since you will have some nervous moments.
Coby Arts any* wind. First time I flew a tiny cub and it landed in a tree then in a chemical plant.
Coby Arts I just got it too, you can fly with little to no throttle it's great.
Yeah i got one recently and it's really fun to fly!

I can't believe how good the video quality is on your vids even when watched at 360p
great paint job how did you do it so good
This was my first radio control plane & I love it
I love these planes ... ive owned two of them and they are actually what helped me learn to fly and progress to bigger 4ch planes

Can't wait for outdoor flying weather here in Sudbury Ontario, hopefully soon.To fly the Champ plus Novus 200 FP heli.

I love my little champ, it's a great plane, and so relaxing to fly!
BTW, what software do you use to put the name overlays on the plane?
Yes you can. I have a DX5E and I binded it to it.
I look back at your older videos and I didn’t notice until now that the hobby zone champ is this old
Hobbyzone makes good stuff, I owned one of the original Aerobird Challegers and it was one of the best planes I've ever owned.
Best beginner plane out there, but do avoid any wind faster than a fast walk.
Can u use this plane's transmitter with other receivers???
Welcome Horizon and thanks for being a sponsor, I have many of your planes and helis :-)
weight and air speed are related. Yes?
I usally fly planes by airhogs but i want to move up is this a good plane to start with?
I wanted to test this thing to see how much payload it could carry, so I put my Mobius ActionCam on it. Believe it or not, it worked! I had to fly full throttle the whole time, and it wouldn't have worked if there was the least bit of wind, but it flew and got some pretty cool video! This is a great plane and I would recommend it to anyone and everyone looking for a first plane, or just a fun plane in general.
You're right Big Josh, It's all about the fun.
Woooohooooooooooo congratz on the new sponsor - Horizon is definitely quality stuff :D
After 30 minutes I was back in the air.
can you guys recommend a cheap reliable beginner plane for me
I fly my champ in -5degrees Celsius but the servos wouldn't move like they should, do the servos not move as much in the cold
Yes
I contacted the store where I bought it and they gave me a new wing and a pair of batteries. Now it flies like a proper Champ ;)
Great video keep it up! I told all my friends bout y'all! U guys r the best!
I have this plane. It's what I learned on. I love it. It was a great trainer.
I Got a Red arrow for Christmas (low wing) and i have never flown before any tips and i do have a simulator
I was hoping the Horizon Hobby videos would start soon!
i had one of these, first day i flew it it was a little to windy and the thing on full throttle didnt have enough power to fight the wind, tried to bring it down but it was blown out of sight and i never found it lol... oh well if i ever get another one ill be upgrading the motor..
When I flew my rc champ it was so fun since I am a beginner but sadly since it was my first go I crashed it a couple of times and my rudder got smashed to pieces,if you want to know I stalled it and it fell
they are pretty tough but i broke the wings in half the first day, but still love it, parts are cheap if u need them
These planes fly awesome.
Get the Duet it is amazing. It is extremely durable and easy to fly. But as always your choice.
I would to see an updated parkzone micro series I would love to see that
Get some altitude and then pitch down a little to get some speed, not a lot but enough to pick up momentum, this will give u about 2 mph more speed. If it stalls a lot try killing the throttle just before you pull back so it doesnt want to just climb. Once it gets past vertical it should just fall back and complete the loop. I do loops with the champ all day, completely stock setup. Also helps to have fully charged battery and no wind
flite test you should put floats on the champ =D
flite test I love your videos and you helped my get into the hobby I now fly at a club every tuesday and I am building a profile F 22 just like the one you guys built.
Just because of this video I went out and bought a champ. I love it!!!!!
Would this be a good first plane?
Yes!
