    IMO, one of the big reasons Elon Musk likes being interviewed by Tim Dodd and gives him these special tours, is that Tim notices when he should be quiet to allow Elon time to think. Tim does this very well, both while waiting for answers to questions, and when he simply notices Elon has "gone off" somewhere in his head to think.

      So true. It looked like Elon was thinking about flaps being utilized in another way, after Tim 'bounced' some of his thoughts out loud. Last time Tim inspired Elon to abandon the thrusters: what might this conversation lead to?
      Great to see the first part of this meeting go so well, without a lot of noise and Elon does not have bad back pain this time around.

    For an engineer like me, it's always great to hear Elon say "we might be wrong" or, "we don't always get it right" since it shows how important the engineering/scientific process is for endeavors like this (or really any project.)

      @stylis666 2 года назад +6

      So, as an engineer, what do you think Elon actually said in this video beside "eh", and "we use gas", "we have more than enough pressure", "we'll vent it anyway". And tell me, how is that new as apposed to when the first "star" ship went into space, and gas pressure was used to move around?
      Also, what would you consider a star ship? Any ship that exits Earth's atmosphere and from which at some point in time you'd be able to see a star?
      What field of engineering are you in?

    • @RealAndySkibba
      @RealAndySkibba 2 года назад +32

      @@stylis666 Ship is the vehicle Starship is/was the system.
      I'm a mechanical engineer.
      The RCS using gas isn't new. However the idea to use ullage gas (left over gas not needed for propellant) is a newer idea since all current space vehicles are not a giant tank like Ship.Ship's.
      Basically the idea is to vent it when it can do useful work vs venting it before landing (want the least amount of fuel possible in tanks to reduce risk of explosion during landing.)

      for me an engineering student/part time technical drawer. Hitting an actual industrial job was such an eye opener. Like other CEOs and people giving expert lectures always seem to be so incredibly far off and out of reach while just filled to the brink with confidence. And then you work in those firms and notice everybody is just cooking with water. So "we might be wrong" for me is just honesty. Because that's the thing all of those other f'****** also "might be wrong" they just don't say it.

    • @RealAndySkibba
      @RealAndySkibba 2 года назад +12

      @@MrTree421 it's definitely a result of Elon being involved with integration hell and assembly processes. There are usually a bunch of ways to get something accomplished, the goal is always to find one that works and then iterate to the one that's the most efficient.
      I did like his thought that a solution may not have to be the best, it just has to be the best at reducing cost per ton compared to another idea.

    The moments I like the most are when you make a suggestion about something or ask about other possibilities and Elon actually takes a moment to think about it as if you were actually one of his employees or a consultant of sorts. Yes and no. In the early days of spaceflight, a program like that could have been aired on broadcast TV. That was before television programming was aimed at the lowest common denominator. People 60 years were much more knowledgeable about science in general and about aeronautics, in part because it was still new. For the average person, traveling by airplane was a rarity and most had never been off the ground.

    • @LemonLadyRecords
      @LemonLadyRecords 2 года назад +2

      @@billmoran3812 The target TV audience has never been other than the lowest common denominator (lcd) where ratings is king. My grandparents, who were in their early 50s before Allan Shepard's flight, were, like many Americans, not very educated (3rd grade for my grandfathers). They weren't really into frills like the space program, having been through two WWs, the Great Depression and lower class poverty. Religion, fueled by low education and suspicion, was a huge factor, too, as many thought tech was the harbinger of the apocalypse (my grandfather thought this until he passed in the 80s, during the Shuttle's heyday). Nuclear weapons, you know, so you can hardly blame them! It was my much better educated 30-something parents (engr and dr) who were ignited by science, as were many of us kids (but not all).
      Yes, programs like this, although often more formally thought out and efficient, and much less technical (it was a broader audience), complete with models and animation, were aired throughout the many hours of launch to splashdown broadcasts. They had to fill all the hurry up and wait with something! Plus, we were hostage, as mission coverage was shown on all 3 networks. Various astronauts, von Braun, and Chris Kraft were very frequent guests (and great communicators, esp Kraft). But without these factors, this much science wouldn't have seen the light of day, and not due to anything but ratings and lcd. Documentaries were rare and the domain of young public television, which didn't have much of an audience, not being lcd.
      But, as space missions became more routine, and longer, TV had to reduce its coverage. Ratings were terrible, networks were losing money (harder to justify a days long mission compared to the hours long Mercury missions, although they eventually added commercials), and people were mad about their lcd shows getting cancelled. You can't really compare this audience to a nationwide TV audience then, esp only spread among 3 channels, not thousands of YT channels. My parents would have watched some of this content, but most wouldn't, so back to demand, which has never been high. Trust me, in the 50s, like today, science-themed channels could not have competed well with sports, gossip, beauty, and lcd Kardashian channels.

    I liked the way Elon and Joe (director, Starship engineering ) interact.
    They both seem comfortable with how dynamic the SpaceX design process is. No egos, no superiority, just a nerdy love of making it better to timely priorities.
    Joe has no reaction to Elon throwing ideas around, like shifting upper flap mount positions, grid fin numbers, potential COPV removal, he takes it all in his stride,
    It's just something that may or may not happen several iterations down the track, or already design work in progress.
    I could see a journeyman NASA engineer having trouble adapting to this sort of culture and having trouble not being precious about ideas and being frustrated with the constant buoyant design priorities.
    That's what most impressed me in the take away from this video.

    Gives me chills how much Elon is grounded with his team. The fact that even the base workers are content and chill in his presence really shows a world of a difference. As an engineer whose worked on high profile projects, I can personally tell you that the stress having a CEO around is extremely intimidating. I don't know if anyone else mentioned it in the thousands of comments so far, but on Apollo, the S-IVB third stage used ullage gas propulsively, though not for full 3-axis control.
    After its first burn to get into Earth orbit, the S-IVB's tanks were still mostly full of liquid oxygen and hydrogen intended for the TLI burn to send Apollo to the Moon. The liquid hydrogen continued to boil off and that gas was sent to propulsive vents at the rear of the vehicle. While in Earth orbit, the stack maintained a 'pointy-end-forward' attitude and the rearward-venting hydrogen served to keep the propellants settled to the bottom of their tanks and away from their vents.
