The people ranting about the "fakeness" of her accent have never had an accent. Just think about how you switch from one way of talking to your friends to another way of talking to your boss. When you have a heavy accent, lived abroad for a number of years, or just interact with a different group for a while, you start talking different, naturally. Give it a try.
IrishEyes1989 You bring up a valid point that everyone has an accent. I respect that. I think we agree that when you're dropped into an environment where people speak differently than you do (especially if this move is made when you're a kid), some people/kids pick up the local accent, very quickly. We just adapt.
It's not that different really from speaking two languages fluently, which so many people do (I used to live in Montreal - it's super super common to meet people there who are native speakers in both french and english, and have no accent in either). If people can be bilingual with languages, why not with dialect or accents? Especially if you learned both fairly young and keep spending time in both environments.
Agreed. I love that she brings to light that this does actually happen. I love accents and pay attention to subtle nuances when people speak. I've caught myself slip into different accents subconsciously when I'm in different areas or around certain people. When I catch myself part of me gets nervous people will think I'm some weirdo "trying to be something I'm not", the other part of me thinks its fun and really interesting... and kind of hopes the longer I stay in the area the stronger it will get. lol
in fact, Think about it... Isn't it odd that people find it normal for a brit to take on an american accent, or "lose" their accent if they've been in the states for a little bit, but an American is considered a "fake" if they happen to pick up an English or any other one if they've been away?..
This is true. I often even find myself speaking differently with different sets of people, such as friends from uni vs friends from secondary school, et cetera... i've also lived in three different countries and find myself speaking in the accent of that country whenever i find myself with people from that country, regardless of where i am. Truly crazy and people have commented about how surprised they are when i switch almost immediately when speaking with different people
I don't care what accent Gillian Anderson uses, she is a damn good actress and sexy as hell. Anything she does is great, so who cares about her accent.
I spent my childhood bouncing between Canada and England. My accent reflects that. I speak to someone English and I have a strong english accent. I speak to Canadians and my accent changes. Day to day I have a hodgepodge combination. It happens. Eventually you end up going with whatever is comfortable and what those around you can understand. Incidentally, her accent is flawless.
luxx_interior No actually it’s not. It’s called “code switching” and it’s a very intelligent thing to do if you want to establish rapport and have a better connection with your audience. Calling someone a “poser” is indicative of ignorance. A poser is someone pretending to be someone they are not. Gillian is American and English. Her natural accent is kind of a blend between UK and US, but she plays up her American accent when she’s in the states and plays up her English accent when in England. And oftentimes its an unconscious thing to do because when you are around people speaking a certain way, you have a natural tendency to pick up the regionalisms and inflections without even trying.
The accent thing just kind of happens. I get a German accent when I go back to Germany where I used to live, and get my American one back when I come back home. I also developed a bit of an English accent after spending only a few days with my British friends. What you around you are changed by.
mikey p To you they sound like they are still from England, but an English person would probably say they’re accent has changed! So it’s a matter of perspective. Plus, celebrities that travel back and forth across the pond steadily often never really lose their accent. It just becomes muddled in with their new accent.
Londoner born and bred. You would think she was English, no question. The accent switching she does between American and English without effort is probably the best I've ever heard.
She's lived in both America and England hence why she has both accents. I think a UK audience would relate more to an English accent. If you look at her interviews on American TV, she speaks in an American accent.
I'm a big fan of Gillian Anderson, I think she's a phenomenal actress. And obviously drop dead gorgeous. Some things are just undeniable ;) Regarding the whole accent debate, I'll admit I used to be really put off by it, but I have a theory about it that I figure I might as well share here. She has spent roughly half her life living in the U.S. and the other half in the U.K., so presumably she has had just about as much exposure to American accents as British ones. I think what has happened is that she possesses some strange hybrid of the two accents, which would sound odd to most people (i.e. most likely the pronunciation of her vowels, as those are really the main differentiating points between different accents in the English-speaking world). Therefore, I believe that she reverts back and forth between the two accents in each of their respective continents/countries as required, simply to avoid embarrassment or confusion. Part of me can relate to this because I grew up between Canada and the U.S. and I have been told by people in both countries over the years that I have a "muddled" or "unidentifiable" accent. I often find myself drawing out the length of my vowels and cutting g's from the end of certain words when I am in the States, whereas when I'm back in Canada, my vowels become more clipped, my pronunciations a bit more precise. The reason we notice Gillian's accent changes so much is because of the dramatic difference between a standard Midwestern American accent and a standard RP English accent. To be honest, it's a social survival mechanism. We all subconsciously mimic the prevailing accent wherever we happen to live. We want to fit in and not stand out, so we change the way we speak. To sum up, I think Gillian's accent changes are deliberate but that she has a completely legitimate reason for switching back and forth. The bottom line is she's a fucking rock star either way :D
+IrishEyes1989 I totally understand the thought process. I live in the southern U.S. and most of my family lives in the north. In the south I'm asked where I'm from, but up north I get asked if I'm really from the south because my overall accent is neutral. Now, my accent goes more northern when I see family and stays fairly neutral down south. I also think, it's her way of blending into both countries.
I should never look at the comment section when I'm watching something that includes Gillian speaking in a British accent, all these people bitching about her changing accents are driving me crazy. First of all, she's American-British. Or British-American, I'm not sure which one it is or if it even matters. Anyway. She's not just American, she's not just British. She's lived in both countries for years so she's fluent in both accents and subconsciously switches them depending on who she's talking to. It's a thing and she's not the only person in the world who does that. It should be a relatively easy concept to grasp, considering that people who fluently speak several languages exist as well and nobody ever questions that. Second of all, if her British accent bothers you so fucking much, then why are you here yelling about it instead of somewhere else where you wouldn't have to listen to her "fake" accent????
I think it is important not to judge her speech whether she is speaking with a British or American accent. Given that she has spent a significant amount of time in both the UK and US, I think it is fair to say that both are to a certain degree natural to her. Her British accent probably sounds a little more posh to Americans because of where she was educated and grew up in the UK. Whereas her American accent is more neutral and mid western influenced and does not stand out as much to the average American listener. I think she sounds fine both ways. I was born in the States but grew up in Canada so I can understand to some extent what it is like to adapt to speaking differently depending on where I am.
The amount of people annoyed by petty thing, like her English accent here is ridiculous. Unbelievable, worst yet, they're not even brits. Gillian Anderson is half English/Irish & spent half amount of her life living in Britannia. Yet you riled up she picks up the accent? She is even so brit, she was initially having difficulty adjusting to midwest American accent when she was in America.
Brian Fantana She did say men are usually terrified of her; that would explain Bob Jones and trha2222. Go sit in the corner and don't touch your chastity devices, the two of you! Mr. Bob and Bud from America critiquing accents like they've learned to not mispronounce every word that isn't "like". Can't write a three line comment without cock-ups on RUclips and think they can talk about language.
What is the purpose of this moronic argument?! The woman spent her most formative years in the UK, 2-11, making her default accent British - the American one was the one she had to adopt, not the other way round. And! She holds British citizenship!
trha2222 I see what you're saying but you're going about this all wrong and treating her as an adult whereas you should be thinking about a two-year old Gillian Anderson. I'll give you a couple of examples. Alicia Silverstone - born and raised to an entirely British family but sounds as American as Peanut butter and jelly. Because she was raised in the States. Two close Israeli friends of mine moved to the US with their 3-year old girl in 2011. The kid only spoke Hebrew till then. Four years on and she sounds as native as they come despite both her Mum and Dad still speaking with the heaviest Israeli accent. Linguistic imprints on a child's mind are almost always permanent. You can't unlearn your default accent and a toddler's mind is one of the most pliable, adaptable things there are. If anyone has me incredulous, it's Portia deRossi whose Australian accent seemed to have faded out of existence virtually over night in her mid '20s when she immigrated to the US. There's nothing fake about Anderson's accent. She had to adapt as a human being, and add her being an actress to the mix, accent gymnastics come that much easier to actors...especially the better ones.
the fall is amazing! what a tour de force that was, at first I was turned off my the slow pace, but the characters and acting and wrting really get you engaged. looking forward to series 3 and nice to see scully revamped and with a british accent lol
She also forgot to say, When her folks moved back to the US they kept their place in London. And would go back every summer without fail until she moved back full-time in 2001
About her accent; I think it's legit because since she is in the UK right now the people around her influence her accent, kind of how during the school year, while I'm around several people with country accents, I tend to develop one over time, then lose it in the summer, then get it back again
"I have some Action, but I never get to ask for a date " hahaha Mr. Duchovny likes to go straight to the point wisely... I prefer her US accent, she looks quite stunning. David and Gillian are definately the best couple I ever met. Cheers up for you guys.. can't wait for XF3 .. my best wishes for you and your future plans!
They actually aren't a couple. All you said about they're been together is just speculation. But I hope that David, that is also single nowadays, do it right and ask her for a date.
I was only around 10 when watching X-Files and remember Gillian (scully) so well. She is a gorgeous creature and still till this day I fancy the pants off her. She's just pure class. Type of woman you could only dream of making love to. Whoever she's with at the moment, I hope he cherishes her, lucky bastard!
She was born in Chicago, then around 1-2 years old moved to London, and moved back to the states at 11. So she speaks where she’s comfortable. It’s not like Mel Gibson moving to Australia at 12 then coming back here with an Australian accent
Gillian's accent is amazing I actually thought she was British and just talented at the American accent! Then I read she's biadilectual and her accent depends on where she is.
@@pjincho Tired is an understatement, she wasn't just tired but very tired-me and my friend both did her spit roast at her place about 2 hours before she went on the show! She never made it into rehersals because of it!
Ana some of her words come out as British accidentally I’ve noticed for Example “going” and “all” in a few episodes of X-Files in the early seasons. I love the British accent and I’m American.
You still The beautiful wonderful strongest female sicentest and FBI Agent Dana Scully , I love Gillian Anderson so much, u change many opinions and beliefs about women by this amazing woman I love women and respect women, (my mother, my sister, my girlfriend, my fiance, my wife.. etc)
Yea you know when some people come out of relationships, And they just want to play the single life- Having fun no strings, Not getting asked what time you back etc
Have a look here on youtube for Gillian on the 'Leno' show in the States recorded roughly around the same time. She chats with him with the full-on US accent. I guess one could say she's a bit fake in that respect but she's a very talented lady nonetheless. And at 45, still very hot.
She was born in Chicago, Not raised there! grew up with i England from 12 months old till 12 lol. She moved back to US though when she was 12 not 11-also when her family moved back to the US her family kept their place in London and would go back there every summer without fail for nearly 6 months at a time And she moved back perm in 2002 :-)
@@mikekaraoke Then why is it that she speaks in different british accents every time. Is she changing classes for every interview? Can't stand her and she's an overactress.
@@m12m10c92 Yea exactly, But you also forgot to mention that when her family moved back to the US when she was 12 not 11. The family kept their London home and would go back every summer for 5/6 months at a time without fail Until she moved back perm in 2002 :-)
Does she put it on? I think she might be a little bit. Ive lived in MN nearly 30 years and still sound somewhat like an Englishman. D'ya know what I mean?
my initial reaction was shes a phony but now i just think thats a great talent, i wonder what her natural one is though seeing as she has spend half her life in both countries
It is not a case of "using" any accent. I was born in the UK and lived in South Africa from the age of 8. As we all had British accents in the home, I would get laughed at by my school friends because when I spoke to my parents, I spoke with a British accent, yet, when I turned and spoke to my friends in the next breath, I spoke with a South African accent. I did not do it deliberately and did not even know it was happening. I have many friends who have the same "problem" and none of them are aware it is happening either. Even today, when I speak to my children who are in South Africa, my SA accent comes to the fore and when I speak to my friends here in the UK, I sound like a Brit. It is not a conscious decision or act to "change accents".
I dislike Ross so much and I hate how he makes his guests visibly uncomfortable but I endured the awkwardness because GA is so beautiful and my tiny cinnamon roll too good for this world too pure. Is she still single? I'd totally ask her out on a date.
Well that is your problem then, After all she grew up with from 18 months till 12 years old Also when they moved back to US, Her family still kept their place in London and would go back every Summer without fail and stayed there 5/6 months at a time untill Gillian moved back perm in 2002
Ummm us Brits do say American things some times that is a fact I do some times as you know we have so many American TV Shows in UK She was brought up here from 12 months old till 12 lol. She moved back to US though when she was 12 not 11- also when her family moved back to the US her family kept their place in London and would go back there every summer without fail for nearly 6 months at a time And she moved back perm in 2002 :-)
So right. When she puts on the British accent, I know she is trying to be endearing but it comes across as so insincere. She was hardly in the UK and accents only solidify as a late teen, not pre 10 years old.
+littleollieowl as someone who was raised in 5 different countries across asia, been to 8 schools (3 were american international schools and 5 were british schools) and let me tell you this is a genuine thing. My accent alternates between english and american depending on who i'm talking to. im from the uk but go to uni in canada now ahah but i honestly don't see why you're so skeptical about this?? this was fairly normal for a lot of the people i know who were raised in international communities.
joggingislife I believe it is a genuine thing but as she is an actress and was here up until 10, I don't buy her particular case. I do adore her though. By the way, your accent must be a work of art, amazing!
+The Barn Owl That is such a crock of shit. Accents solidify as early as age six. Learn some basic linguistics before passing such misinformed judgement.
Eran Edry No it isn't. I've had many friends that leave their countries before 10, develop the new accent, then never go back. Methinks you need to learn basic linguistics.
+GardenState2012 As I mentioned above, the world is changing so drastically and with so many people migrating, I think it's now hard to say what is or isn't a valid accent anymore. I had a British co-worker who I didn't even know was British until she pronounced one word in particular with a distinctly British accent. Before that I had thought she was American! She has never lived in the US.
My left ear loved this.

Gibson seems to have lost his Aussie accent a fair while ago, although some words he says has an Australian twang to them.
Gillian's accent is amazing I actually thought she was British and just talented at the American accent! Then I read she's biadilectual and her accent depends on where she is.
She seems awkwardly composed here, not at all her lively, bubbly self. I wonder why...
Really, I don't agree
She appears to be tired, or possibly inebriated... maybe Xanax?
@@pjincho Tired is an understatement, she wasn't just tired but very tired-me and my friend both did her spit roast at her place about 2 hours before she went on the show!
She never made it into rehersals because of it!
I was born in a wrong decade.
This left only audio is horrible.
Do you want me to fix it for you?
When she's doing interviews in the U.K. she has an English accent... when she does interviews in the States, she's got an American accent... hmmm....
Yes, naughty...her PR at work there...
You're just about the billionth person to bother to point that out on youtube but congrats anyway lol
Mimosa Madeleines .... ok then....
***** yeah ok then :)
She's bidialectal. Look it up.
When Wossy was asking her about her sex life 😬💀
I love her.
If she was actually a redhead with that accent I'd die
que importa su acento ella es una excelente actriz y muy bella
She has British accent as Hugh Dancy is British but has now American accent and is married to an American Actress
Why is David Beckham in another room?
it's so weird hearing her British accent rather than her American accent haha. still it's great she can do both
Ana some of her words come out as British accidentally I’ve noticed for Example “going” and “all” in a few episodes of X-Files in the early seasons. I love the British accent and I’m American.
Красотка!!!
I prefer her american accent not gunna lie
She's like Christian Bale.
I FUCKING LOVE HER
You still The beautiful wonderful strongest female sicentest and FBI Agent Dana Scully , I love Gillian Anderson so much, u change many opinions and beliefs about women by this amazing woman I love women and respect women, (my mother, my sister, my girlfriend, my fiance, my wife.. etc)
I'd ask her on a date!
Who's Will Fewel?
shes single???
jeez!
Yea you know when some people come out of relationships, And they just want to play the single life- Having fun no strings, Not getting asked what time you back etc
She had small kiddies then too
Have a look here on youtube for Gillian on the 'Leno' show in the States recorded roughly around the same time. She chats with him with the full-on US accent. I guess one could say she's a bit fake in that respect but she's a very talented lady nonetheless. And at 45, still very hot.
She's just bidialectal. Lived in both the UK and USA.
Beautiful woman ❤
Come on!!! She's from Chicago!
She was born in Chicago, Not raised there!
grew up with i England from 12 months old till 12 lol.
She moved back to US though when she was 12 not 11-also when her family moved back to the US her family kept their place in London and would go back there every summer without fail for nearly 6 months at a time
And she moved back perm in 2002 :-)
@@mikekaraoke Then why is it that she speaks in different british accents every time. Is she changing classes for every interview? Can't stand her and she's an overactress.
Age 2 to 11 is not half her life
She lives there now, she has lived there for about 12 years, plus the 9 years when she was a kid it is half her life :)
@@m12m10c92 Yea exactly, But you also forgot to mention that when her family moved back to the US when she was 12 not 11. The family kept their London home and would go back every summer for 5/6 months at a time without fail
Until she moved back perm in 2002 :-)
ugh, i had to watch an interview with her bc i was sick of emotionless Stella in The Fall, thank god Gillian is not like that
adorable woman,
What's wrong with her accent....is some interviews she's american af
Does she put it on? I think she might be a little bit. Ive lived in MN nearly 30 years and still sound somewhat like an Englishman. D'ya know what I mean?
She's Brimerican!
my initial reaction was shes a phony but now i just think thats a great talent, i wonder what her natural one is though seeing as she has spend half her life in both countries
I love her..... but she's not herself here..... not sure why... :-(
She is very beautiful and Interesting.
I dislike Ross so much and I hate how he makes his guests visibly uncomfortable but I endured the awkwardness because GA is so beautiful and my tiny cinnamon roll too good for this world too pure. Is she still single? I'd totally ask her out on a date.
British women are hot
Which type?
I love the x files
I don't like her British accent. Bring back that North American accent!
why is everyone making such a big deal about the changing of her accents? she is who she is fuck off that's what she would. say.
Well that is your problem then, After all she grew up with from 18 months till 12 years old
Also when they moved back to US, Her family still kept their place in London and would go back every Summer without fail and stayed there 5/6 months at a time untill Gillian moved back perm in 2002
So weird... she doesn't sound British at all on this video...
She’s great but if she were really a Brit she’d have said matches. I’ve watched a few ‘games’ busted.
Ummm us Brits do say American things some times that is a fact
I do some times as you know we have so many American TV Shows in UK
She was brought up here from 12 months old till 12 lol.
She moved back to US though when she was 12 not 11- also when her family moved back to the US her family kept their place in London and would go back there every summer without fail for nearly 6 months at a time
And she moved back perm in 2002 :-)
She's not trying to be "a real Brit". She is who she is, she's both British and American.
TIL Gillian Anderson is British
WTF!?? Hahahah!! She shifts accent from what country she's in?! What's real then?
i think she is faking her accent.
How can you fake an accent from 18 months old till 12 lol
Her accent sounds not quite English.
WTF, I am British and that is full English
I'm team American accent for Gillian. The British accent doesn't suit her
Horrible British accent.
Check out bad boys just waiting to pop out
Beautiful British accent.
better than an American hick accent.
There's more than one type of British accents, like there's different English guys accents and the northern and southern side of wales
Sounds lovely to me.
