Hope you enjoy this! Busy doing essays (what fun...) so the next video will be on Monday! As always please like, comment and share if you can! Thanks :)
Well... Actually Hello My name is Thomas Fallon. I previously comment on one of your videos about Turkey and and I said "why Ireland called Ireland". I have watched your video about Ireland and I can't believe you made a video about it. :-)
Hey, fan of your videos but as an Irish guy I thought I'd just give a pronunciation pointer. "Éire" is pronounced air-uh, whereas "eire" is pronounced err-uh. The two words are entirely distinct and it actually is not a case of the accent in Éire being optional in modern Irish. Indeed, the use of the incorrect spelling "Eire" is often seen as a slight against Irish sovereignty, as it was the spelling used by British authorities when communicating with Ireland after independence. This was such an issue that the Irish High Court issued a judgment holding that official State correspondence addressed to "Eire" could legally be ignored, as no such State exists.
It's spelt Éire man. Not Eire. And it's Éireann not Eirin, that's the Americanised. We do put fádas on capital letters in Irish if they're vowels. See: Áire, Áine, íoc and éist.
You can also think of it like this, Eire in german is ire and the english spoke a language very similar to german and dutch so it would also have been ire.
I think it's since Wales in Old English. Welsh meant something along the lines of foreigner, or stranger. I heard it was an insult that the Saxons gave to them after invading them.
Didn't stop it from going viral. "Well... Actually" will have to decide for himself if the effort into producing a video that essentially has already been done is worth it. From a viewer's perspective I would say, no. I'd rather see something niche (and more importantly, interesting), as a lot of "W...A" videos are.
Northern Ireland is, in British law, a province, not a country. And Republic of Ireland is the official _description_ of the state: the official name of the state is just Ireland. WonderWhy has bettee quality videos on these topics than CGP Grey does.
You need to pronounce the 2nd e in Éire and I never have seen Éire without the fáda. Also, What's Éiren? Do you mean Éirinn, or Éireann, because they are the same thing, just grammatical ways of say Ireland. But nice video
So, if the sisters wanted the land named after them, what places (if any) did the Gaelic tongue name after Banba and Fodla? (Sorry, I don't know how to type accented o's.)
I wish you wouldn't call it the Gaelic language - It is the irish language or gaelige - pronouced gwail ga , the Brittish named it gaelic - and they call the Scottish langauge similar to gaelige gaelic too , but they are the only ones who call it that - in short its irish -
Éire is NOT pronounced 'Air'. It's promounced 'Air-ah'. And 'Éire' refers to the whole mainland, the whole of the big island of Ireland and does not traditionally refer to the islands of Éire/Ireland. Even today, the people of Toraí island, and other islands off the coast of the mainland, speak about 'ag dul go hÉireann' ('going to Ireland'), meaning the mainland.

Ireland has a cool name origin.

The whole Island. \but the use of Banba and Fodla is usually poetic.
Why is Earth called Earth ?
+François Calvaresi
I wonder when that was standardized?

Right, Gaelic is a family of languages. It's like insisting on calling Spanish "Romantic" or calling English "Germanic".
Also create a network with someone from Irelands (both northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland) government/military.
'aira' not 'air'
