I just bought a time capsule auto non-turbo 2.5L '89 Sundance sedan with 41,000 miles, and it was absolute LOVE at first sight! Being the birth-destined little shitboxes that they were, I really didn't expect much from it...and it absolutely blew me away on the test drive!!! It's solid as a rock, takes hills like flat ground, and I can close every door with one finger! 💖💖💖
The one you really want to review is the 1987 - 1989 Dodge Shadow Shelby CSX with the manual. It was 175 HP and capable of 7.1 second 0-60 which was quick in the day. Fun fact: you could actually rent these from Thrifty Car Rental at the time. I know because I rented one for a day for little more than it cost to rent a standard car. It had great graphics, was a blast to drive, and sounded great.
You are definitely correct about the Shelby CSX being the ones to want to review. Notes: CSX stands for Carroll Shelby eXperimental. The 1988 Shelby CSX-T (Thrifty) version did not use the same 175 hp/175 lbs torque Turbo II version like the 1987 CSX. The CSX-T was a Turbo I car, equipped with the same 2.2L 145 hp/168 lbs torque non-intercooled Turbo engine available in the regular production Shadow ES. The 1989 is the most interesting of the three years with the Turbo IV VNT engine (175 hp/205 lbs torque) and Fiberide plastic composite wheels, and Kaminari made ground FX. I know most about the latter because I am the owner of one.
It wasn't just white paint. I used to have a blue 1988 Plymouth Horizon. The paint would peel off of it in sheets as I was driving down the road. It seems like it was worse in Sun Belt areas.
I have an ‘89 Sundance Rs turbo 2 door 5 speed. Very enjoyable car. Love the turbo sounds and the transmission shifts quite nice. Similar spec to this car. I use my center console as a cup holder.
I had this exact car minus the sunroof. It lasted for many years and had over 175K miles when she was done. And I beat the living shit out of it and it took it without ever leaving me stranded. Thanks for the memories!
Except for the automatic transmission, chipping paint and the manual locks, mirrors and windows, this is MY car! The very 1st brand new car I ever owned. 1989 ES, white 2 door hatchback with burgundy vulgalour interior, same wheels, every possible option. The storage bin at the bottom of the center console had a wonderful fluid damped motion when you opened it. Like something you'd expect to find on a Rolls, no joke. And it DID have cup holders underneath the console BTW, but it was just a removable plastic plate that probably got lost on yours. Yes, the hatch was cavernous! But I don't believe you when you say the A/C still works. Every Chrysler sold in the 80s had a defective compressor clutch that they refused to own up to. I had mine for 10 years and probably replaced it 3 times. But what a blast! I'd get looks from dudes in Porsches. If you slipped the clutch and floored it, the front wheels would just bounce violently up and down like a jackhammer, so it wasn't exactly a rival for the M3. But if I recall, it cost $13k new and was the easiest engine to work on ever. Did all the repairs myself, literally under a shade tree. Sold it in 1998 with 113k miles on it, never replaced clutch or brakes. The manual removable sunroof developed a leak (my fault) that was so bad, I went out one winter morning when it was freezing rain and there was ice on the INSIDE of the windshield! And the heater wasn't working. So now i know what it feels like to own a vintage British sports car. Thanks SO much for the great memories!
1989 was the first year of the 2.5 Turbo, and it was a big improvement over the earlier 2.2 turbos. Chrysler did a great job of engineering a turbo engine that had strong torque at low speeds, and was exceptionally well behaved and livable in a real-world road car. The 2.5 had the added refinement of twin balance shafts to smooth out the 4-cylinder imbalance. The automatic was only a 3-speed and didn't lock up, but it was extremely well adapted to the turbo engine and contributed to the overall very pleasant driving experience that you found. I'm still driving its brother, a Plymouth Sundance RS, and I'm hoping to have it until I die.
The Big 3 - Chrysler, GM & Ford keep discontinuing cars and replacing them with a new model instead of redesigning them and improving as the Japanese do. Toyota has made the Corolla for 57 years.
the corolla always been a lame car, on the other hand, when mazda stopped making decent cars they renamed all their models for 3 - 6, cx and all wanna be german garbage names like that
My grandma had a Shadow she bought new. Eventually when she was done with it, she passed it to me. Wasn't a turbo, but that little thing was a solid car. Never had a single issue with her. Good on gas and once you got through the gears she drove great. Nothing fancy, just a solid basic car that got you where you wanted to go.
I bought a new '93 V6 with the 5 speed; $10,700 out the door. And it would walk the 80's muscle car slushboxes all day long. Drove it for 160k miles of cheap maintenance and gave it to my brother, who never checks the oil thus seized it in a couple years.
Reminds me of my first car, a 1988 Plymouth Sundance turbo (no aerodynamic headlamps for me). Mine was black, and fast with a a manual transmission, and I loved it.
I had an 89 es turbo. It was fast for that day.Raced many cars including late 90's gti's,x-24s,Beretta GTs etc.Embarassed many of them.Just an all around fun sleeper.
I had a couple different Shadow ES's, both with the V6, one with auto and one with manual. I still miss those cars. They were so much fun for what they were; inexpensive, quick (not fast, but quick) little cars. They really are as much fun as he says in the videos. Notice to auto makers, bring back these types of cars.
Peeling paint is a big issue with these cars, especially the lighter colors. The notchback design robs a lot of useable space. These were originally designed to replace the Turismo/Charger but they were sold alongside them.
Gotta love a hatchback that looks like a notchback sedan. The Daihatsu Applause was a similar style, except it was a five door. There was a bit of a trend towards that style of hatchback in the eighties. The Ford Escort range in the UK was similar.
I never knew the Shadow & Sundance were notchback hatchbacks!! 😳😳 Not many cars have the shape of a regular notchback sedan with an almost vertical rear window, but a hatchback!
I always thought it'd be kinda cool to take a Dodge Shadow & a Dodge Challenger & *mash* them together & make a Dodge Shadow Hellcat...keeping the interior O.G.
Back around 2007 or so I had a Sundance RS which was the Plymouth version of this car with the turbo. Mine was pretty much the exact same spec as this car when I got it. Auto trans and no intercooler. I fitted a bigger turbo from Forward Motion and manual swapped it. Also put an SRT4 front suspension and added a big front mount intercooler and a computer tune chip from FWD Performance. This was back in my dumber days, so it had a bigger downpipe just open and completely gutted the interior. The car made around 300 wheel hp and was a a blast to hunt Mustangs and Hondas at the Saturday car meets. I once had a full sized dryer in that thing with the hatch closed. 😂😂. I have a couple videos of it on my channel.
I remember these, the Shadow was sought-after but most had the Plymouth Sundance version. inb4 the rough 90's builds that had even looser standards. Not many on the road anymore. The '90 Shadow had a 175hp/205lb.ft turbo 2.2L i4 and a '91 convertible lowered the power to mass ratio before the platform was discontinued and replaced with the Neon.
The paint issues you described, it wasn't just white. If you look at photos of used Chrysler Corporation products from the same era, you'll notice that they also had the same problem with green, purple, maroon, and teal.
Hmmm… I'd say these 80's Chrysler Turbo cars were junky, but cool cars. At least that's what I remember from back in the day. Certainly Dodge/Chrysler/Plymouth were doing more with turbos than anyone else at the time that I remember.
I appreciate all the cars you review Zack. Question, how come you don't show and comment more on your driving impressions? I know you definitely talk about how it drives, but we never really see you go through corners or accelerating. You probably don't want abuse the cars but I'm sure one or two pulls would be acceptable with most owners.
Fog lights. Hellas straight from the factory. With protective black plastic covers you had to remove manually BEFORE you knew you were gonna need to use them. Or stop and take them off. Probably not the safest thing to have to do in, oh, let's say, FOG! And I think the volume nub you're referring to is actually the joystick that was a combination L/R balance and F/R fade button. Genius. The Alfa Romeos of the time (owned by Chrysler, or they owned Chrysler, not sure which) had the exact same radio.
Dodge really likes cheap speed. The rest of the car may be meh but they can make some moderately potent engines. It's a shame we don't have anything like this any more.
I was wondering if ALL Dodge Turbos came w bullet mufflers..Lacking overdrive transmissions The noise level on the road was unacceptable in all but the small sporty cars...I felt that the suspension on the Omni as well as likely the shadow was much too soft as the author notes making hard corners or emergency maneuvers dangerous for all but skiiled drivers
That 3-speed automatic is slow but bulletproof. In general, the hate towards Chrysler is enormous and often meaningless. The truth is, even the 4-speed automatic was reliable, well cared for and maintained, but the average American barely cares about giving it gas. to your car, you are going to be interested in maintaining the transmission, that's why they die

CSX actually stood for Carroll Shelby Export
Dodge Lancer ES
Motor week magazine tested the black/silver one in 88 and got 0-60 in 6.7 and q mile in 14.8 not to bad and almost as quick as the Omni GLHS
