The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, lifeboat crews around the UK and Ireland are ready to launch to help those in need. Whether you're stuck on a sinking ship, cut off by a rapidly rising tide, or in the water and close to drowning, RNLI crew members will drop everything to come to your rescue. 95% of RNLI lifeboat crews and station staff are volunteers.
But it’s not just lifeboats. RNLI lifeguards patrol 248 beaches across the UK and Channel Islands, keeping people safe, providing safety advice and rescuing those in trouble. Education volunteers visit schools and swimming clubs to help teach the next generation how to enjoy the water safely. And volunteer fundraisers and shop workers give up their time to generate vital funds. The RNLI is also working to help communities around the world that are most at risk of drowning.
If you spot someone in trouble in the water, call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard.

My husband was once rescued by the wonderful volunteers of the RNLI. Whenever you are tempted to think 'this is becoming a terrible world' remember all the volunteers who choose to risk their own lives to save others, who go out in conditions most of us wouldn't like to go for a walk in, and at times that most of us would refuse to leave what we are enjoying, Christmas, birthdays, family occasions and after a full working day. They make fewer headlines than terrorists, murderers and abusers. Thank you, RNLI so much. Thanks isn't nearly enough.

I liked particularly the brief black and white clip of the Newbiggin lifeboat being towed on the beach, took me back to my childhood. My mum was a member of the ladies' committee there.

The boat hooks on ALB's are still blue & white as a nod to the tradition of Blue & White oars - I think the same applies to the (emergency) paddles on the B Class. D Class have plain paddles and I am not sure about E-Class & Hovercraft.

My suggestion was to make crew helmets day-glow green instead of white; can't see a white helmet in a sea of white foam and spray. Thank you to all RNLI personnel for your great contribution to marine safety.

Yellow and orange are the two most visible colours to the human eye in almost any background, hence the front of trains being yellow, a lot more visible than the old British Railways (SR and WR) green when using a rural ungated foot or road crossing.

Why are RNLI lifeboats orange? Which poses a second question, why is only the superstructure orange and not the whole vessel?
I think I can answer my own question. I saw some film taken from a light aircraft of a lifeboat undertaking a search during very foggy conditions. The orange superstructure was almost invisible in the fog, but the navy blue hull was still clearly visible. Presumably that is why the boats of your French counterparts have dark green hulls and the majority of pilot boats around the world have black hulls.

Is it so the French can spot them and let the migrants know when to get in the water?
