I'm from Minnesota and they grow around oak trees! Late August and early September is prime for these mushrooms. They like it to be about 60 degrees Fahrenheit/16.5 celsius in the day and 40 degrees Fahrenheit/4.4 Celsius at night in the southern us they pick them in November
Scrolled down to ask some questions or get answers... first comment was it... I'm in elk river minnesota.. oak trees in August or September it is... thanks...
Beautiful , where is this , like what state ? How did you process all of them . How did you take care of all them . I mean that was more then average family can eat .
Have you ever used them to brew alcohol like a mushroom mead?. I hace had the idea of using that and shitaki mushrooms to flavor mead for an umami earthy flavor.
I knowbthere are chaga recipes, but I am sure maitaki would be just as good, from my experience with these mushrooms. www.bardicbrews.net/2011/04/brewing-mead-with-chaga/ I am not sure if I have found pther mushroom meads other then shrooms, which not what I am trying to make.
I found a lot of them last fall. I probably harvested around 80 lbs. The first time i cooked them they were so good. The next time I cooked some I got sick within 15 min. Throwing up and sick for 2 days. Well I'm a slow learner so a few weeks later I tried them again. Got sick all over again. Then threw them all away. Does anyone know why they made me sick? Allergy perhaps?
I hear everyone can react differently from them. I have personally never gotten sick from them but on occasion I will get the runs and see them in the stool. Don’t know if it’s the mushrooms tho.
Yeah I know! I never thought that we would be so successful! We had a lot of fun but when it came to cleaning them Bryan sat in his ass the whole time...
its not a huge deal, but you guys should definitely bring a knife next time. breaking them off like that could possibly hurt the mycelium, the living part of the organism. great find, btw. we dont have them like that down here near chicago
you can not over pick mushrooms... they are the fruit of the mushroom... its like apples on a tree... if you pick the apples dose it hurt the tree.. nope it dose not
Don't ya love it , Don't pick em all , Use a knife , did you get permission , Leave some ! Where were these lazy SOB 'S I never see them where I hunt. Great score brothers. I'm goin huntin for these next chance I get. Theres some oaks up by a "sang" patch I gotta hit.
This would have been such a better video if you had described what type of forest your in, low or high ground, what types of trees they grew under, what time of year etc.
ALPHA JACK we freeze a bunch in food saver bags. We boil them then pan fry them in oil or butter with Greek seasoning. They are delicious. We forgot to boil them once and they were slightly bitter.
MattMohs Outdoorshow man my mouth is watering, thanks for the reply, much appreciated. Next year I’ll have to search for them, winter is upon us here in NY
ALPHA JACK the season has been over for a few months here in Minnesota. I’m actually going icefishing tomorrow there’s 8 inches of ice so if that gives you an idea of what kinda weather we have been having.
maybe next time you hunt 30 acres and leave at least 1/4 of each flush that you haul. that will ensure that it continues to grow back and shows respect for the gift you've been given.
marissa laskey we left a bunch of them. A lot of them were to old to pick we pick this woods every year we have permission to pick 160 acres we only picked 20 of the 160 but there is 1500 acres of woods surrounding the property.
Yeah! I just love finding wild things to eat, I think it's way better than the store! I don't have many videos of my animals but I have ducks, geese, turkeys, and chickens and I will tell you there's nothing like raising your own food!
How do you know if they're edible mushrooms or not, did you learn as a kid because your parents found mushrooms in the wild? My brother he gets morel mushrooms, but me I can't tell the difference and I know there are poisonous ones out there.
Neal LaBarbera. There's too many varieties of mushrooms and I don't know which is edible or not I don't want to take my chances. I'm 52 years old I guess I'm too young. LOL. I'll leave it up to the experts.
well try reishi very common, i've been alive for 22 years and know how to use it and look up shit on the internet not that difficult sorry bro ....lololol
@@MattMohsOutdoors Ok, thank you. :) I'm in Vermont and have not yet had any luck finding Hens. My mom lives in Massachusetts & they grow all over her yard.
wthigo77 you don't have a clue what we do with them. And no we didn't use them all yet. But we will. There is such a thing as food saver bags and freezers.
Mushrooms play major role in the echo system, therefore they are sharing information with other species on the Earth via underground network, it protects the natural habitat from the damage of pollution as well as feed the nutrition into soil for the healthy forest. Please try to be ethical when you out in the woods picking them, and don't be greedy, because they help you to live too. Thank you :-)
hey... let me enlighten you on something... mushrooms are not plants.. you can not over pick them... they are the fruit of the mushroom... its like apples on a tree... if you pick the apples dose it hurt the tree.. no... so before you go criticizing someone know what your talking about
If it doesn’t directly effect you why should it matter what I do. You have no idea what kind of property I have, no clue how many we didn’t pick, we touched 20 acres of over 200 to find these mushrooms. No worries of over harvest here.
I was not addressing you specifically. Mushroom foraging is growing in popularity and many newcomers pick everything they see. The problem is spores from mushrooms are how fungi reproduce so taking too much can cause extinction or biodiversity collapse. Watch a video lecture by Dr. Walter Jehne, or Paul Stamets to fully appreciate the importance of fungi. Through the web of life everything is connected so what you do on "YOUR" land does effect me. Maybe you should try some magic mushroom to expand your consciousnceness. Happy hunting.
wthigo77 wthigo77 we didn't take them all. You have no idea how little property we covered... If your going to hate go elsewhere. Sounds like you supported Hillary Clinton the way you bitch and moan

Dude got slightly more hammered every mushroom they found. Love it!

"smells like deer pis" 3:55 hahahah
Awesome video. Great find. Note to self, when hunting for large useful mushrooms I'll take a large leaf gathering trash bag with me.
Marvi Marv it would be too heavy, the ones on the bottom would be squished.
I see. Transportation / Storage is the key. Thanks for the insight.
Lol dudes hammered
You're a big lug. Great video, fun to watch. Thanks for sharing
Just found a bunch in Jackson mi today only picked enough for the inner loins of my deer cooked with onions you can't beat it!!!

Found a patch of these at my old house under a big oak that was worked over by a woodpecker in the fall.
That's awesome! Only mushrooms I pick are Morel mushrooms. I'd be interested in trying these. Great video!

Oh my... what did the Indians do without knives?
insane haul !!!!!!! "Mental" !!!! FILLED the whole kitchen island look at THAT.
Do you get permission from the owners of the land? And why do you take the entire cluster? Shouldn't you leave some so it regrows?
Melissa RMT land permission wasn't a problem and as long as you leave the stem in the ground they will grow back next year
you can not over pick mushrooms... they are the fruit of the mushroom... its like apples on a tree... if you pick the apples dose it hurt the tree.. nope it dose not
Shouldn't you leave some for sporing?
Andrew Cross we covered 20 acres of 150 acre plot of land there's plenty left
Aren't the tan ones hen-of-the-woods (Grifola frondosa) and the yellow one a chicken-of-the-woods (Laetiporus sulphureus)?
death69k the ones in the video were all hen of the woods. The chicken of the woods is blaze orange and we don't care for them at all
MattMohs Outdoorshow chicken of the woods stil good even frien them good channel

you should leave some to spore out--do NOT pick them all.
Janet Wilham we picked 20 acres of a 160 acres woods

Why dont you guys cut them? Keeps a lot of dirt out of your bags and the mycelium in the soil.
We normally do but forgot a knife if you watch any of my other videos you will see that.
I found one size of a small beachball or basketball last year
