There aren’t many experiences in life better than pulling slabs through the ice with dad. Those are some of the best days of the year. We’ve only had safe ice for about a week here in western PA so far so it’s been a tough waiting period wondering if and when the hardwater season will continue. We’re all about that deep basin structure as well. It’s so nice being able to consistently hammer the crappie in peace, away from the shallow bays where the crowds of fishermen gather. Plus, you don’t have to deal with the constant hookups with dink sunfish. The only downside to deep water crappie is that you have to keep those giant breeders and small ones that you wish you could release. Gotta keep em all no matter the size. But it’s still by far the best approach on the ice
Built my son tip downs... Awesome for crappie and perch. Ok as a dead stick for gills but you have to re tie everything. Super easy for little kids. If the handle is up the fish is on.
I love chasing tip downs! It's such an easy technique to do too. I made a couple of homemade ones a few years back. One just out of PVC pipe and a couple of pvc tees. I recently tweaked it a bit to make it even better. Ever use a Dangler? That's my favorite rod/reel tip down, hands down!
Took a few pics of your PVC tip down. Would be a good addition if you featured a short segment how yours are put together. I took a few pics off the HDTV.. and was curious about the use of the red ball tie downs, and see the second smaller pvc holds the pin driven thru the schooler rods..
Nice outing. First tip down was tipping slightly due to the big Rosie you had on. There is no doubt that there could have been fish staring at it making it swim harder.
I think when we made our tipdowns, it was the cheapest, simplest thing I have done in fishing since learning how to fish with a cane pole in the creek behind the house as a kid.
Thanks for sharing this fun video! I was out of town for about a week and just watched. I'm glad you caught some nice eaters. Let me know if you are out this way again, although my teaching gig is about to make me busy again. :)
Great video Kyle! Can't beat crappie tip downs!
You bet I figured you'd like this video as this is your life lol

Right on, I've heard of them but never used them.
Tip downs are so much fun!
Those hectic non-stop bites can be alot of fun!
It was crazy!
Nice video. Perfect eaters, enjoy the fish fry. Cheers.
You guys are so lucky to have ice . We still have open water I miss ice fishing.
Wisconsin is like on the borderline of having no ice down south.
Minnesota is lucky enough to be better.
@@gerthao4850 Try southern Iowa dude
@Finn Con Some lakes are probably still open water?
@@gerthao4850 almost everything is iced but its all a honeycomb/slush mixture
I'm glad you measured them.
I am playing LoZ Windwaker, the music to you guys just fishing, its hilarious
What are the rods? I have shorter ones like that for crappies, but those longer ones would be great for walleyes
Just hammering them! Fish fry to ensue! What a day
You got that right man!!

Right on Larry the red tie downs are for when the rod is in storage it holds the rod in

You bet simple and esay!
"Butt hurt" , I'm probably out of the loop for phrases...but that's a new one for me...thanks now I can use it!
What is the base to your tip-downs, and do you use 3' pipe?
You ever think of Guiding? I would be interested in joining you for this.
I have a few extra deliniators left. I like the tip down
Do you use bobbers or do they most of the time stay at the right depth?
No bobbers you set the depth then when the pole starts to dip set the hook!
how do the construction flags hold up in a heavier wind? any troubles with them. lowing over?
Nope they have a heavy base and you can stack slush around them
Looking for an area up north that doesn’t have a ton of snow on the lakes. Where would be the best area?
Near superior or anything south of Barron
Whats the line limit in Wisconsin? Its only 2 here in Minnesota.

Hay Kevin!
What are the patches on the jacket your dad has? Looks like a 35 year veterans uniform I used to serve with lol
They are Mepps Fishing Patches
If you had to pick just one, ice fishing or open water fishing?
Ahhhhh Thats a hard one.. ICE
