I think the difference in dropbacks between Bryce and Brees has a lot to do with their offensive backgrounds, not their 2-inch (at most) height difference. Brees came up when even QBs in spread offenses took most snaps from under center, so he got in the habit of making traditional dropbacks. Bryce has never taken substantial under-center (or even pistol) snaps, and there’s less of a reason to use a traditional dropback from the shotgun. Bryce’s dropback probably does help his vision, but if Brees (who did have some problems seeing and throwing short over the OL at times) hadn’t developed when traditional dropbacks were the only option, he might have have utilized a dropback similar to Bryce in order to see better. Maybe this would have been an issue with his timing, and maybe it’s one for Bryce. But it seems like an issue that is easily corrected if it becomes a major problem. If missing the occasional open receiver will get him better timing, then I’m sure that’s a trade that he’ll make.

I will take a undersized football savant that is calm under pressure over a panicking statue who thinks he should take shots because he is tough enough to take em. I saw enough hits on Bryce Young to see he knows how to go down and mitigate the straight on shots that actually create serious injuries. No1 Overall without a doubt. This turned out to be a SPOT ON analysis. Bryce's drop back has caused real issues. He literally drops back on his tip toes which causes not a slower delivery but makes it harder for him to escape the rush. He's had numerous sacks where he simply wasn't able to transition from his tip toes to his feet in time to escape. What a mess.

There certainly is a lot that isn't conventional about Young's game. But there are exceptions, and if you think a guy can be special, you gotta take him. Drafting players, let alone QBs is a crapshoot anyway, and if you get it wrong, you can just try again in a few years. The thing is, if Young ends up succeeding, no one's going to care how small he is, and the size excuse is going to seem ridiculous. DeVonta Smith was insanely small for a receiver coming out and there were questions about his ability to get off press. It turns out that he's such a good route runner and so quick that it makes getting jammed a non factor. Guys can adjust their play style. And it's not like there's a sure thing in the rest of the class. Stroud has questions about how much of his production was tied to the ohio state system, and frankly, arm strength and mobility concerns as well. Levis and Richardson are both incredibly raw and were not very good last year. Bryce did it with an average at best supporting cast and scheme, and he continually showed insane poise in the biggest moments. And from everything we can tell, his character is off the charts. It's a risk, but I think it's a risk you gotta take.

In 2022, the WR corps was pretty average. There were some highly-ranked guys, but their play didn’t match their hype. Tua, Mac, and Jalen had MUCH better personnel around them than Bryce Young did.

Duke or Texas Tech don’t have as much talent as even a bad Bama OL, but they don’t face nearly the same level of defensive talent either. The opposition matters.
No one ever said Bryce had elite physical tools. But he does have pretty good ones, and elite mental tools. And there’s no question he carried the Bama offense the last 2 seasons. Some great analysis. Teams that are dominant like , most talented college team 2000's Miami hurricanes, Reggio Bush USC the QB's don't have to be as accurate, line leaves them with few games that they will take repeated NFL hits week after week. So the QB's flaws aren't a problem. When the hit the League it is spotlighted! Size (you take hits every week)
Accurate pasa (windows are a foot wide not feet)
Reading defense (QB needs to do it themselves not coach, needs to clearly identify defense in seconds or u aren't going to be successful).

    • @bluemarlin8138
      @bluemarlin8138 Год назад +2

That is somewhat accurate, but not entirely in Bryce’s case. Bryce had a pretty terrible OL in his Heisman season, except for Evan Neal. The right side was a turnstile and he got hit far more than prior Bama QBs. Things improved in 2022 but the OL still wasn’t what Bama is used to. You’re right that he’ll need to put the ball in tighter windows though. He wasn’t as good as Tua and Mac with his ball placement on intermediate and crossing routes, where you really need to be very accurate. To me, it always seemed like it was more of an issue with him holding the ball a bit too long and waiting for the WR to get open instead of anticipating the WR’s breaks, as opposed to a genuine ball placement issue. (Perhaps it does have something to do with his footwork, as the video claims.). He can put the ball where he wants it with the best of them when he is confident in his read and sets his feet though. Bryce had two elite WRs in 2021 who really helped him out, but there was a massive drop-off in 2022 due to some bad evals in the previous few WR classes, and youth among the guys with real talent. Still, Bryce has a lot of qualities that don’t come along very often and that can’t really be taught. He’s worth the risk, especially now that the rookie wage scale keeps a bad first round pick from putting you in salary cap hell for 5 years.

Kyler isn’t really taller, and while those guys have sturdier frames (or more accurately, have filled out their frames more) than Young has now, only Wilson was that developed in college. Bryce has already put on 10-15 pounds in order to protect himself, and while I’m sure not all of it is “good weight” since he put it on in a hurry, there’s no reason to think he can’t do so in the future. He’s only 21 years old, and most guys continue to develop physically into their mid-20s, especially in an NFL strength program. And it’s not as if he’s been injury-prone like Tua was. Bryce had one shoulder injury in 2 years starting in a conference that’s about as close as you’re going to get to the NFL as far as size/speed. And contrary to popular belief, his OL was actually pretty bad apart from a couple of players, and he got hit A LOT in his Heisman season.
That said, his height does limit him somewhat, and that was true at Bama as well. He has trouble seeing WRs on quick slants across the middle, which is one reason that play was largely absent after Tua and Mac had so much success with it. He needs to be in the right offense that will move him around to help him see the field. But in the right situation, he can be very good. He has a mind for football that you just can’t teach, and a good (but not elite) arm that will get better as he gets stronger.

The thoughtful nature of Young's game is less teachable and more promising to me. I would rather take on the risk of Young for is mind and try to see if the team can build up some muscle on him and, if needed, put some heel risers into his cleats, than take a QB who I hope can develop their understanding of the game. Overall, I think Houston is going to take him and we are going to have some more Desaun type years where the promise of the QB is there while the overall structure of the team lets him down.
I think Stroud is going to be too appealing to a team that has a demonstrated history of hoping for the absolute be from a QB. I think we're likely going to watch a Stroud deal with some Fields like highs and lows. Like Fields, I think Stroud is locked in on his first receiver for too long and locks in too quickly. There will be wow moments, but the team isn't good, so those moments are going to come in the midst of lot of 50% completion games. But unlike Fields, I think Stroud won't be able to run his way past those issues to expend the debate about his promise and his ceiling into a second contract.

Is this ringer guy a shorty? He is totally obsessed with height. Like absolutely obsessed. Some of Young's play is affected by height, but what this dude did is take balls that were slightly off target and streeeetch to find a way to connect it to his height.
So there are times when Young hits those exact same throws perfectly in stride....so was he taller for those throws?
Part of what he missed is Young's height also adds to his ability to quickly change direction, and evade. Because his cat like movements, the DL finds it self reaching over OL trying to get a hand on him, but he's to low to grab.
No one knows how his style of play will translate, but someone has to be the shortest QB in the league. The shortest so far have actually had longer careers. As a Panther's fan we know all to well, having one of the biggest QB's is no guarantee of longevity.

Stroud is slower, less mobile, slower reaction and his performance under pressure was worse than literally 90% of QB in college.

Love the video, thank you for giving a balanced take on Bryce Young. I lean towards he’ll be a bust cus all of his best plays look like backyard football. Justin Fields gets run down by NFL D-Lineman.

You’re definitely not in-tuned with his actual skill set than. He’s more than backyard football player to say the least maybe you don’t hold him in high regard.

@@Laabby17 He has a weak arm, plays way too off structure, can't stay in the pocket to save his life, and inconsistent on deep throws.
