I have a question that I hope people who have knowledge over it can help answer. In PS1 and Saturn games there is a genre of action games that have 3d polygon characters over 2d pre-render backgrounds. These games look beautiful enough on these consoles already but I have always wondered why it can't be even more beautiful. Eg. The same kind of games that appeared on later systems like GameCube and PS4 have even more beautiful 2d backgrounds. I was wondering since it's basically just a 2d photograph backdrop why can't PS1 have 2d pre render backgrounds like those of GameCube quality etc.
