  • OK so cant see what I'm playing at gigs so will need to upgrade the side dot markers but on a budget.
All you need is a drill, a nail, some plastic dot marker rods and a little bit of patience.

Now I noticed that the pickup covers fit pretty nice with the Gothic style of the guitar.
As for drilling in the wood, a guy who make furniture told me that it should be done at high speed, and slow advance, especially for small drill bits. At low speed there is a risk to chip the wood at the entry point.
Thumbs up for the bravery to drill holes in the neck!

yeah I think you are right, I also think my drill bit was a bit blunt.

Thanks Dave, I just got some glowing inlays from Luminlay out of Japan. I don't trust myself to do it right will have to take it to the shop to have them installed.
    Love the channel.

I don't worry about my guitars-I play them. Some people just look at them. If I get a new guitar, I put a scratch on it right away! I put my dots just a hair low. I like to feel it, so I know where I am on the neck without looking.

Nice job.... Just did the very same job on our mutual friends axe - with Luminlay markers. Well worth the wait from Japan. About £15 will do the whole neck.

I have a small electric screwdriver that I sometimes use with that exact same chuck add-on that you used. Definitely comes in handy but mine is kind of wobbly when drilling, as if the chuck and the hex shank are not lined up straight. It drills straight but feels weird to use as the screwdriver moves around a bit to compensate.

Hi Dave, there's another way to "replace" the side markers. I've tried the sticker idea myself and then found a company in Japan that sells affordable super high quality stickers for the fretboard, body and neck. I've ordered from them a few times and been really happy with the results.

dont they come off when you start sweating?

Nope, they are removable and won't harm the fretboard but otherwise they stay put. I live in Canada and it usually takes about 3 weeks to get them but it's worth the wait. The site is www.inlaystickers.com if you'd like to check them out. I'm not affiliated with this company in any way but when I find a good product I like to pass along the info.

I like that you didn't put a dot of the first fret. You started with the third fret. I don't like dots on the first fret. I've got some guitars with dots on the first fret that I'd like to remove. Having a dot on the first fret sometimes throws me off when I play high on the neck, because there is not dot on the 13 fret (because you don't want dots on adjacent frets). The first dot after the 12 fret should be the same as the first dot after the nut (just an octave higher).

I'm glad you can drill straight free hand.I have never been able to i have tried and tried never straight.I would have done neon paint with an artist brush.LOL

I would spray paint the markers with glow in the dark paint.

      is an option :)

I think Chapman guitars actually use glow in the dark side inlays instead of plain white, which would be an even better option, easier than painting if you could find some.

Awesome. Getting reAdy to do that to a 81 Ibanez destroyer II. The markers have faded.

Hey Dave, it’s not too scary on an epiphone, let’s see you do it on one of your Gibson’s!

How did you get the old dots out? Or did you just drill through them?

I had to Google who Steve Wilson is. When my partner saw a picture of him she asked if it was a picture of you taken some years ago, haha. Sorry Dave, just had to share that with you.
