    I remember both me and my best friend split the price on a Dreamcast and 2 games including Sonic Adventure on Launch day.
    It was a great 2 or so years with incredible games like Soul Calibur blowing everything out of the water at the time !
    With my best friend Paul passing away a few years ago the Dreamcast has a special place in my heart.

    If a Nintendo PlayStation 2 happened after SNES CD and N64 with CDs, then the Dreamcast would've survived!

    I really wanted to get the Dreamcast back in the early 2000's, but all my friends wanted the PS2, and so they talked me out of getting the Dreamcast, and so I also got the PS2🤷‍♂️

    Dreamcast is my favorite console. Such a explosion of early 00's quirky creativity. Shenmue was a massively ambitious game that felt really alive, and some modern open-world games could gain a lot from studying it's attention to detail. Jet Set Radio probably had the coolest style of any game ever, and the funkiest soundtrack. Space Channel 5 is oozing with style. Sonic Adventure was a glorious mess, but I'm still charmed by it. Seaman was such a risky move, and I respect it for that. And it was the best place for 3rd party for a small amount of time. They really went all it, and everything felt COLORFUL and fun.

    I still think that Sega’s issues began with the Sega CD. Yes it was a great system, but it being sold alongside the Genesis, while also coming out with the console priced 32x accessory followed up relatively shortly thereafter by the Saturn made the buying public not know what the hell to buy which scared developers and publishers away. By the time the Dreamcast came out, Sega’s consumer base was drastically diminished from what it was 10 years prior.

    I remember how awesome the dreamcast looked when I first saw it. It was like the expensive futuristic system that my parents couldn't afford cause I already had a N64. I really wish Sega still made systems cause they're specifically a gaming company who always pushed boundaries, the true competitor to Nintendo. Sony and Microsoft are just electronic companies who can afford to make mistakes and just hire 3rd parties to make most of their games. I remember when XBOX came out and I've always seen it as the lesser PlayStation that luckily grew a fanbase thanks to Halo. Sega made dumb mistakes, but they were the perfect in between of Nintendo and PlayStation and I wish they could have another shot at the console wars, cause they've been lacking...

  • @danielmalinen6337
    @danielmalinen6337 3 дня назад +1

    It could also have an effect that in the early years of the console war Nintedo had set and demanded a terms that stores that wanted to sell Nintendo consoles could not sell Sega and Sony consoles or they could not sell Nintendo consoles. Later, however, Nintendo lifted its prohibition and allowed stores to sell Nintendo consoles even if they had other consoles in their selection. The reason why Nintendo did this was that Sony stole Nintendo's CD Rom console which became the PlayStation.

    The Dreamcast was a party machine like the N64. The console thrived when you had friends over, sucked ass when you didn't. The Dreamcast being canceled puts people in this bullcrap territory of, "what if." The spoiler alert, it would have died being a party machine like the N64, the console is fine, its not as great as people make it out to be.

    I recall they had bad QC issues with the U.S. launch batch of consoles and titles. I worked Toys R Us at the time and we had about a 25% return rate or higher, which told us this may not last despite having huge promise. The news of PS2’s backwards compatibility and built in DVD rom stole the spotlight soon after.

    The DVD really killed it. Back then for dvd player was 299 and the ps2 was the same 299! If sega had put the dvd player in and had EA sports on board it would have gone on longer. Online was great but broadband fast Internet wasn't around then and was expensive when it arrived so demand for online play wasn't considered a deal braker. PlayStation hype was just too high after the success of the ps1. Sony kept supporting ps1 for ages so when people saw the ps2 leap in graphics it was unstoppable. I never purchased a ps2 for the reason it killed sega and out of protest moved over to xbox

    The Dreamcast was am awesome console, the issue with the Dreamcast however wasn't the Dreamcast's fault but Sega. Sega wasted too many money between the 16-Bit and 32-Bit era that they don't have any budget left to keep the Dreamcast alive. They also throw the entire kitchen sink and their whole life insurance on Shenmue hoping that game will save the Dreamcast from the brink but it never did. Shenmue was an innovative open world game but it never help sell the Dreamcast achieve that profit they are aiming for. Even the return of Sonic with Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 weren't enough to persuade people to buy the Dreamcast.

      While Sega were floundering for a good few years, they were still in the black through to 1997. Sega's biggest net losses were incurred specifically between 1998-2001, and it's not close.
      For perspective, if Sony hypothetically called it quits after the PS3, it would be as mundane as trying to chalk that up to the PSX DVR, lol.

    Seeing how every console is a scam now, I most seen with Nintendo with their added paid online, their ignoring of joycon drift (yeah they do repairs but they wouldn’t need to if they did the proper testing) and rushed unfinished games like animal crossing new horizons pokemon Mario sports games etc and the ui of the switch is plain a major step back from 3ds and Wii U so is the online functions, perhaps sets too would stop innovating and stay still and take money in like the big 3 do now

    The 360 didn't 'Win out' over the PS3 - Sony's system sold more units over its lifetime. Xbox has never won a console generation.

    • @strykah92
      @strykah92 3 дня назад +1

      To be fair that doesn't seem to be what he was getting at. The 360 being a significantly cheaper alternative to the PS3 in the first few years of that generation is what got people on board.
      The rhetoric is still slightly misleading though. The 360's Xenon CPU (while perhaps not as exotic as the Cell processor) was in fact custom made by IBM specifically for it. The biggest difference in the cost of materials between the two consoles really, was the Blu-Ray drive, which was totally overkill circa-2006.

      @@RetroDudeX77 The US isn't the only market in the world, Xbox was killed in Japan and behind in most of Europe.
      Sony has a strategy of releasing some of its top-selling games later in each system's life, so seeing further sales of systems later in the generation is exactly what you'd expect.
