How Do Permaculture Communities Protect Themselves

    Question:
In the 14.7 Bioregional Organization video I note there is no enforcement or police on this map and I assume that is intentional. How are the principles, policies, and rules of a bioregion enforced if there are those who would behave differently, or act in a manner that is wasteful, harmful, or hurtful? While I think meeting basic needs will reduce crime it is unrealistic to assume crime will be eliminated especially as the worst crimes seem to be committed by those who are wealthy or indeed the wealthiest, not those who are most desperate. It is not someone starving who mobilizes industrial Ag practices, promotes deforestation, creates the most pollution or exploits the most people. How does this Permaculture model of governance actually deal with flawed human nature and the balance of free will (and human rights) vs. harm to others and the earth?

    About Geoff:
Geoff is a world-renowned permaculture consultant, designer, and teacher. He has established permaculture demonstration sites that function as education centers in all the world’s extreme climates - information on the success of these systems is networked through the Permaculture Research Institute and the www.permaculturenews.org website.
    About Permaculture:
Permaculture (en.wikipedia.o...) integrates land, resources, people and the environment through mutually beneficial synergies - imitating the no waste, closed-loop systems seen in diverse natural systems. Permaculture applies holistic solutions that are applicable in rural and urban contexts and at any scale. It is a multidisciplinary toolbox including agriculture, water harvesting and hydrology, energy, natural building, forestry, waste management, animal systems, aquaculture, appropriate technology, economics, and community development.

Good that you pointed that out about poor people Geoff. The questioner is quite correct about our flawed state. Too many people hold a naive, Utopian view about people, that does not take into account self centred narcissism.

Ralph Lewis but he tends to skirt/miss/ignore some key points of a question... like in this, it’s not only about the external negative influence. The question was about an internal member behaving differently. Maybe that’s an answer that we are left to sort ourselves-i don’t know. But I have seen quite a few q&a’s like this one where at the end, it felt incomplete

    Hi fellow permies.
    1. As much as I love Geoff I think he was not able to answer the question.
    2. A viable framework would be the SaferWorld/UNDP Community Security Framework.(I am not connected to either organization.)
    3. I have some ideas based on my security and Risk Organization background as well as being an advocate of community safety and security in the RP with experience helping 40 plus communities with their security problems before becoming a Permie.
    4. If you are interested you can PM me so we can discuss the possible solution based on Permaculture and sound Security Principles.
I came across this video some time back as I was interested in the topic because of my background.
While I claim no expertise I do have experience on this and as a certified Permaculture Aid Specialist.
My purpose in this reply is to share what I have found out, tried and case studies as well as to meet others who have experiences and inputs on this fascinating and important subject.

I'm learning to start trees from seeds and cuttings. When I get extra, I have two places other than my property to put them, the local community centre and a large piece of land that I removed a dead forest from. We'll have three food forests!

Great question. Another good ? to ask is just WHERE is this protective force ALREADY?
I'm in and grown up in USA, but in my aspirations to move back to India (where my parents came to USA from), excited about recent developments in awareness in south India with great sadhguru and campaign ("rally for rivers" and "cauvery calling") to protect water sheds with mass reforestation work, as !it seems like the government authorities have also recognized the goodness of such efforts.

I think he needed to digest the question first because he completely missed the mark on this one.
It is understandable given that it has probably never crossed his mind.
However, as a Parmaculture Aid Practitioner and a Security Practitioner here in the Philippines having specialized securing communities, I can suggest looking into the UNDP/Safer World Community Security (CS) Framework that allows the community stakeholders a say on policy and even coordination with state security providers, having an effect on Mission Objectives and policies.
Secondly it will depend both on the local culture, laws and informal leadership structure in the area.
Speaking about Permanent Culture, peace keeping is traditionally done by everyone or the males in the tribe.
A modern context is a neighborhood watch system, or a citizen's militia concept, again depending on the accepted culture of the community.

The more there are people getting onto a whole food diet, getting outdoors, interacting with nature and community, feeling empowered in their lives, the fewer there will be feeling disconnected and needing medication and regulation. There will always be some, that's balance, bet there will be fewer.

In defense of the questioner, both refugees and extreme poverty are almost always caused by the greed of the rich and powerful, and the policies they've gotten enacted, or prevented from being enacted.
So, while desperate individuals are responsible for cutting down trees or other destructive activities, the root cause of their desperation lays exactly where she stated.

@@davidsmith9189- you're not agreeing with what I wrote, and I don't agree with what you wrote.
Development is the fastest way to reduce population growth.
And our bribes, coups and wars are responsible for putting and/or keeping quite a large percentage of those bad leaders in power in the third world... and creating many of the refugees and migrants world over.

@@davidsmith9189- every single study looking at the issue shows that development leads to smaller family sizes.

@@davidsmith9189- well, you are conflating several issues here, but I will point one thing out.
The elites do indeed use immigrants and refugees to divide the people, but proving that you have been successfully divided by adopting their anti-immigrant/refugee language is absolutely doing the bidding of those elites.
Railing against the elites and then serving them dutifully suggests some introspection or a reevaluation is in order.

I feel sorry for you and all the other blissfully unaware puppets on their string who can't even recognize the blatant contradictions in the talking points they've got you spewing.

I don't don't when, I saw him give a talk at A permaculture convention in 2014 and he talked about working for the u.s army and the Saudi regime.
Of course Lawton would say it's helping the people of the region, & no doubt there are some positive effects. But in the end it's a continuation of soft-war diplomacy for the u.s military whose goal is to dominate the region and privatise the resource.
So it's small change for the military to pay Lawton for some good will work in exchange for resource control down the track
